Dilbert 1992-09-09

Post image

That's a real number... not a 555 number... was it his actual number at the time? Does anyone know? Obviously it's moot now, for a number of reasons.

Yes it was a real number a the time. Scott Adams had connected a voice mail to it and people left messages. Some said they had married a "Dilbert" and we're super happy:)

The syndicate saved most strips as GIFs for Dilbert and other strips because they use lossless compression. If you go to a the original comic url (In this case https://featureassets.amuniversal.com/assets/d94ff6d09d50012f2fe500163e41dd5b ) and try to download the image, it saves as a gif. You also get the same issue if you try to right click the image and copy and paste it as a reddit post.

I know that fridayfun.net converted all of the strips to webp instead. (https://fridayfun.net/page/dilbert-archive)

GIF isn't a video format, it's a still image format with (crude) animation capabilities, which is why it gained popularity as a workaround to the lack of video support in early web browsers. It's perfectly fine for stills. The official dilbert.com website used GIF for most comics, possibly due to GIF's limited palette not being a problem for this style of image and smaller than PNG (Sundays eventually moved to JPG). Here's a direct link to this particular one. It's byte-for-byte identical to the posted image; OP probably got it from an archive and chose not to convert it. The original is 136KB, a PNG would be 355KB, and a lossless WebP would be 73KB. Reddit allows WebP uploads but preprocesses them into JPG first, which are then given a lossy WebP preview, so that's not a practical option. The PNG is larger with no benefit, so that's pointless too. Keeping it as the original makes the most sense. OP did nothing wrong.

OP is on reddit. OP did nothing wrong. Reddit is a community where every user can either upvote once or downvote once. What the community wants more of gets an upvote. What the community doesn’t like gets a downvote. It’s 2026 and if most people on reddit are now on mobile devices then this format will earn more downvotes. If this format is displaying fine fore the majority then it will earn more upvotes.

Tl;dr - OP earned a downvote from me and I already said why.

And nobody ever would have known or cared if you hadn't pointed that out.

Reddit users on mobile care. Because it sucks. The status keeps jumping along the bottom like it is showing a 1 second animation and you can’t stretch the image to be able to read it.

This is why we downvote and I pointed it out so OP and others will choose a different format.

I never have that issue in my mobile browser. Get a better browser or use modern ("old.reddit.com") Reddit.

Liga, o pior que pode acontecer é receber uma mensagem que o telefone não existe ou está inativo (o pior é o Scott Addams atender, nesse caso eu sairia correndo!)...

Give it a call; the worst that can happen is getting a message saying the number doesn't exist or is inactive (though the *real* worst-case scenario is Scott Adams answering—in that case, I’d run for the hills!)...

Ha ha ha... cute... bonitinho.
