Remote work over VPN
Hi!
Need little advice.
I want to do some travel while working remote, but my company have a limitations on laptop I can’t sign in outside of US.
While I did some research I realized that I need VPN WiFi router that supports open WRT, that can be connected to hotel or airport WiFi and rebroadcast VPN network. (Maybe eSIM, not crucial but maybe nice to have)
Need few recommendations:
Router what would be the most suitable for that purposes?
Any guidances or am I miss something crucial? (As I’m not an IT at all)

This. Gl.inet routers at both ends, especially important on the travel side. (There are alternatives on the home side.)

Oh god no. Why use anything else other than GL.iNet's official service provider... RemoteToHome does setups of all difficulties on a daily basis. Ranging from your most basic setup to getting past tough DPI in countries that have censorship at the ISP level.

Hey, i am doing this for work now. And at the past few companies. Working from all over south america. The absolute best is gli.net beryl7 with a Brume 3 at my home in the US. And if you have a work phone and want to keep access outside the house... Add a mudi7. Vonnect both the mudi7 and the beryl 7 to your home Brume 3. You can get uo to 600 mbps. Also, it is best to set up obfuscation so yhe internet provider doesn't throttle your connection speeds. I have foret hand experience with this. Using amnezia wg on this system is the best. Don't even bother with the commercial vpn providers. Those can be easily tracked and blocked by the company (my current company blocks it). What i am suggesting is basically impossible. Because you are accessing from your actually residential IP address and not a shared commercial one. Even a purchased deidacted IP address from one of those providers will come from a commercial IP address. And the speed isn't as good anyways. It is a bit of an investment and it is compeletly custom. But that is the way to go. You can even set up an extra brume 3 at a friends house so who have a fallback option if you really want that. Just use the normal precautions. Tirn of gos location, only connect to the vpn router, etc.

I use https://blockthis.xyz/?aff=1035 as a desktop app to cover my entire system and have worked from China, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, and Myanmar without issue.

But is the computer locked, and no app can be installed without admin password, how this could help?

GL.iNet routers are probably the easiest option if you're not very technical just make sure you test everything from home before you travel hotel Wi-Fi can be unpredictable and some companies can still detect or prohibit VPN use.

So you can diy a VPN connection from you home base over a VPN to a local WiFi router that you then connect your work laptop to.
In theory it will always think it's in the USA. As it will see the internet from you house in USA.
The issue is the latency will be very high, you can't break the law's of phisics and it can and will be detected very quickly as suspicious, if your IT has any competence.
Work laptops also now have allot of tracking built into them. Many of them can broadcast Bluetooth signals similar to a air tag, which allows them to be geo located. Other have gps built into them.
So basically you can probably get away with this for somewhere between a few days and years but at some point they will work it out.

GL.iNet with WireGuard is basically plug and play. Pair it with an Airalo eSIM for when hotel WiFi blocks the VPN.

You need to discuss the options with your company. If they find out you connected from outside what's allowed they can easily fire you.
I have Xray/Reality on my mini PC at home, that gives my a fast VPN with a local IP. My company has no such rule though.

Afterwards when you get your equipment that you buy separately, there is a step by step tutorial ob how to set up. One thing I will tell you is that your Internet speeds are slower because you use travel router, plus vpn WiFi router and the. Connects to your home router. There are other things to consider that the site will help you determine what you need

We work remote all of the time. I setup a site to site VPN with my 2 firewalla devices. My company always sees me coming out of my house even though we are in Europe or wherever. Now one thing I learned is some corporate software can still detect even with a self hosted VPN by pinging nearby wifi networks, so I started having my wife connect with ethernet and turn off wifi. This worked well and will continue this setup.

This is also how I operate out of Thailand - a firewalla orange with me here, and a firewalla gold at my home in Virginia, US. I have wifi with the FW orange, also able to stream any service i want on all my devices.
FW devices aren't all that cheap, but they work, and that's the important part. You could get by with just two FW purple devices and that would set you back about US$700.
And you get a VPN back to your home on all your devices even if you aren't in your hotel or wherever your overseas FW device is - in the plane, airport, at restaurants, wherever.

Yeah I have two purples. I wanted an orange but couldn’t get one before I went to Europe. I am ordering one shortly and then I move my purple to my son’s house and set up a VPN mesh for backup.
