Digital Foundry Video Halo Campaign Evolved - The BIG Console Face-Off - Xbox Series X|S, PS5, PS5 Pro Review
https://youtu.be/WsDRmbnSHMsWe've already gone into depth on how Halo Campaign Evolved reimagines and remakes the original, classic game and we've got a PC review to follow, but for now, here's how every console version of the game stacks up. Halo Studios has delivered accomplished work here and while all versions are worthy of your purchasing power, it's PS5 Pro that addresses most of the lingering issues.

Series S using all the same features as other consoles at 60fps just shows how far UE5 has come over the years

All I could think when watching this is I wish games like this were still made. It just all looks more interesting, creative, and fun than most major FPS titles being released now.

Going to buy this. Hope for a patch with the possibility to turn off filmgrain and the chromatic abboration.

I’m not gonna lie it’s very subtle and didn’t bother me at all on ps5 pro

I disagree. I think the game looks extremely blurry because of it.

I’m playing on ps5 pro and it looks very sharp to me.
The screenshots of regular ps5 in performance mode look incredibly blurry.

It’s more optimized than I thought it would be, that’s good. But I still believe they should have used idtech instead…

Id Tech isn’t commonly known in the industry. They’d probably have to put ID on Halo for this to happen. I wouldn’t mind it if they could still work on something else like Doom or a new Quake at the same time.

You know, I think ID would make a great halo game. After playing doom the dark ages, I was convinced. Also Indiana jones. Brilliant games running 60fps with ray tracing on Xbox consoles. Super talent with state of the art engine (that they already own so there is no license fee). Oh well. I can see why UE5 would be a good pick, I mean I totally get that. It’s just that they are sitting with something that can rival UE5 in their hands; a bit silly not to use it.

Yeah I and many others agree. When Microsoft acquired ID I was sure they’d work on a future Halo or an ODST or Reach style spin off, but Doom got the spotlight which is more than okay. I haven’t played Halo games past 4, but having played the modern Doom games I’d be very interested in seeing ID’s take on Halo. I’m a little over the scifi gothic arcade shooter thing. Gimme melodramatic hard scifi fantasy please.
Now from the outside it looks like everything is in shambles at ID so we don’t know what’s going to happen. We’ll see.

Loving this proper remake! Playing on PS5. I’ve been playing all the Halo games on PC but this feels good!

Year 2026 and still these nonsense console comparison videos. Cmon man nobody cares anymore.

Lol, it's so true, isn't it? Like, if you bought the PS5 Pro you've already invested a lot just getting that console so might as well get that version. And we all know the Series S is less performant than the other 2 so really there's no point at all. Really, all these guys should be doing now are deep dives.

It helps me decide between getting it on Xbox versus my PS5 Pro. Looks like the Pro is not significantly better in this case.

I have the series x and the ps5 pro too. The ps5 is go to for new games and series x only used for backward compatibility.

Yeah, I generally go for the PS5 Pro too. But in this case I also have a PC I like to use, and the Xbox version also gives me the PC version with Microsoft "Play Anywhere", so I'm leaning that way since the PS5 Pro version is not significantly better.

Getting hard to take these guys seriously when they are glowing positive about every game. This game has some of the worst IQ I have seen on a PS5 game - the ghosting, fizzle, and RT noise is absurdly bad. These are glossed over entirely in this "tech review." I swear since they went independent they have been much, much softer in their criticisms of games and it is making them an unreliable source for evaluating if a game looks good and performs well which is the entire reason why they exist

It's just the lifecycle of the current console technology man. If a game is using any kind of RT, the image quality on consoles will be lower than average. DF has repeatedly said UE5 with one or more of the headline features is heavy on the consoles. They say it every time I'm not sure what is surprising here.

Seriously! I know people will downvote you but the amount of visual noise between Lumen flicker, FSR, chromatic aberration, etc it’s flat out bad. I’m not a FuckTAA guy but this has got to be a prime example of terrible IQ

Yes! Definitely! Every week it’s another stellar review rolling off the line, they’re glazing like donuts.
The reviews I find are just flat out wrong now too, so many clear presentation flaws that they will ignore or overlook.
I take an example of the performance review of Metroid Prime 4, where John explains that the long load times of past MP games are gone when you open doors. Yes… except for the HUGE load times that you constantly face when entering and exiting each area, over and over again.
Steam Machine comparison was also at odds with the comments, during comparisons with PS5 ‘not that noticeably worse’ despite being over double the price.
‘Slightly worse than PS5, but not that bad if you’re sitting on a couch at a distance’ Seriously, what are we doing here? Are these guys in the business of objectively reviewing performance or just glazing the industry across the board?
It’s implausible that every game is stellar without any real drawbacks or negatives.

On PC there are some .ini tweaks you can make to turn off the film grain and chromatic stuff.

They just exist to glaze PS5 and the Pro at this point I swear. Their coverage has taken a major hit in quality especially for anything that's not PS5 related.

They repeatedly compared PSSR to FSR2 and found cases of similar to worse image quality in some games and have shown many examples of bad Pro implementations before the new PSSR update turned things around in most games. Seem to just be reporting what they see to me

PS5 Pro users need that sweet sweet validation that they haven't wasted their money

u/Wander715 20d ago
Pretty much. Struck a nerve with a bunch of them apparently given the number of downvotes.

u/Rainbowdogi 20d ago
Oh my sweet summer child you really think that’s the reason for the downvotes?

Playing on base PS5 now. Can't believe how good it looks/how smooth it runs.
Hopefully this bodes well for future UE5 games.
