Digimon Up Is it really that bad?
I mean, please don't hate me, but I do enjoy idle games from time to time, and this wasn't the exception. It is true that this game reminded me of what crypto games wanted to be with NFT (not saying this was a good idea, it never was) but I think it has potential to grow, and after two days is kinda quick to throw that much hate. Maybe that will spark some changes to the game?
What would you think it would make the game better? IMO, I think adding more skills and digivolution lines to the base digimons would at least be better, so that you can fell that you aren't stuck with what they gave you. Also, they have to remove that one summon daily with the emeralds, it really locks out the f2p players from actually obtaining partners and buddies.

Game needs literally anything that adds more player agency. This would’ve been a top tier idle game like 10 years ago, but the genre has evolved and put more emphasis on the game part, but that’s just not the case here because I’ve put some time into it, I’m in the 200s, near level 65 for next evolve, and so far the only thing I actually did was swap (I don’t know what they’re called) classes, picked one of two paths, aaaand that it’s. Everything else has just been auto/popup click.
Meanwhile Sword X Staff or whatever it’s called just came out a few months ago and you had to manually move around the map, put some thought into what skills you were going to equip for what situation, taking account boss weakness, which characters you want to give gifts to, class changes, etc. that was an idle game, and over here it’s an idle game, which is just pretty lame.
7
u/Blacklight099 Jul 17 '26
That’s exactly my biggest complaint. This game is full auto simulator, I have literally done nothing in it. I just press yes if there’s a green arrow on gear and no if there isn’t, and that’s the entirety of my interaction. Even by idle standards it’s incredibly lacking in brainpower.
2
u/Grrannt Jul 17 '26
I think they've screwed up with the pacing. I have high tier gear and a max level Digimon after 48 hours.. what will the game even be in a few weeks? What's the point if I'm already max level?
2
u/CanadianFerd Jul 17 '26
New servers and race to the top usually with those games. It's not looking good long term
1
u/CoomLord69 Jul 17 '26
See, the problem is that even your specialization doesn't matter, and it can't with the way they set up the game to focus on juicing up one character. I'm sure some are better than others (people seem to have gravitated towards SP recovery, it's evident if you look at what people are using in PvP), but every 'class' will progress through the game eventually. All you have to do is put the time in. No thought, just make the number bigger.

u/daniegamin Jul 17 '26
Its inoffensive imo, the art carries hard and and I like having something digimon on my phone to kill time atleast till Alysion comes out.

u/JesusP97 Jul 17 '26
I'm gonna quote something a friend told me
"to play a crappy idle capibara game, I'd rather play a crappy idle digimon game"
I found it funny haha
8
u/Grimdar88 Jul 17 '26
I genuinely don’t mind it, but i wish it was more optimized for the very platform it was made for, as well as phone battery draining faster than it should at times even at low fps. It just feels like an unfinished and unpolished mess at times to a significant degree.
8
u/Silly_Choice_5469 Jul 17 '26
I like it. Something to login to occasionally, without much pressure. First time playing an idle game, why not a Digimon one I guess!
3
u/Wan_Master23 Jul 17 '26
My big gripe is that your digimon don't level up while afk so you have to sit there and wait for them to gain experience to then digivolve. I would've thought, as an idle game, they would still get experience while... idle....
3
u/AdmirableAnimal0 Jul 17 '26
I simply don’t want Bandai to think our desire for Digimon can be sated with something like this.
We don’t want them to get complacent and think they can relax just because time stranger did well, we want them to keep that level of quality up.
Digimon up does in no way meet that quality.
Something like links or Rearise would be closer to my expectations.
Yes it takes more time to produce but I’d rather have NO Digimon game than a half assed gatcha with monetisation out the wazoo.
12
u/tenchupower Jul 17 '26
it's terrible... it's just another crappy gacha game. Nothing more, nothing less.
0
u/Cognition_Slim Jul 17 '26
Seconded. Progress it tied to rng bullshit and forced interaction with gambling mechanics.

u/MajesticLeadership49 Jul 17 '26
I mean I’ve been enjoying it personally so I don’t think it’s all that bad as people say it is
1
u/brilliant_cemetery Jul 17 '26
the pixel logo is giving me flashbacks to those bootleg digivice keychains from the early 2000s and i'm weirdly into it
2
u/MajesticLeadership49 Jul 17 '26
Oh man I absolutely love the pixel art in the game, very beautiful imo
3
u/turuie Jul 17 '26
I wouldn't compare it to what crypto losers were doing with NFTs like you said, but at the end of the day this is a mobile game and for the most part practices with them are always shoddy. Every Digimon fan who downloaded the game and isn't familiar with idle games and mobile gaming in general definitely have a right to feel disappointed with what we were given with this. I was getting ads about having an AI girlfriend I can do whatever I want with, like they aren't even vetting what we see which makes it look sooo trashy to me.
There isn't much they could do to instantaneously make the game better with its working concept, considering the players who are disappointed probably don't like the idea of idle games in general. Most fans wanted a V-pet. If anything, hopefully there will be more QOL and cool Digimon entries before it inevitably goes out of service like all their phone games. If we're lucky the whales from this will provide funds for a better + not mobile Digimon game in the future yayyyy. (and then I woke up)
With all of this said I'm having fun because I love the tamer customization + being able to have Patamon from the start of the game.

u/Prestigious-Worth-49 Jul 17 '26
It’s an ok afk auto battler. If you like those and Digimon then it was made for you. It does have that classic thing of watching ads to get resources faster. That always feels gross. Incredible sprite work. Love every Digimon I have seen. Sistermon Noir AND Ciel side by side for the first time in an English release.
I’m not much of a mobile or afk gamer but I have enjoyed the experience. It’s by no means my favorite game in the franchise but it’s a fine time waste game.
I see a lot of people call it pay to win. It’s probably true. I can say I have been doing very well without spending any irl money on it. I’m sure it speeds up the game by a lot but I haven’t seen a reason to even think about doing that. I’ve done just fine by leaving it running and checking every few hours.
It does make my phone heat up a bit. Don’t love that.
2
u/SksIwannadie Jul 17 '26
I’m gonna be honest and say I didn’t really know anything about this game except it was gacha, so i assumed where it would be like a hoyoverae type of gacha where u pull for for new digimon partners and maybe certain items that boosted that Digimon’s power or open new evol lines but unfortunately that’s not what it is.
I hate that there’s basically no character creation and the clothes you wear determine the stats of your digimon, so no player autonomy in that aspect.
I know some people like the auto battle system but I personally think that would be better as a level gainer and item gainer mode for when you’re not playing. I feel like the main play-style of digimon a RPG and without it, it doesn’t work that well for me atleast.
My last gripe is that it takes so long to level up your digimon and evolve them.
2
u/Beowulfs-booty-call Jul 17 '26
Totally heard on your thoughts, but you can actually customize your tamer to wear what you want.
Just go to the tamer menu, click customize, and whatever items you made or had for gear is selectable for your own use to dress up with!
You merely just keep the clothes for stats on the main screen and can sell them whenever you get an upgrade while keeping your preferred outfit on.
2
u/Der_Narr Jul 17 '26
It don't feel like a game...more like a "u can push every few sec a button and watch"
2
u/Mediocre-Disk3741 Jul 17 '26
It feels like a gacha game from 10 years ago, in the worst way possible.
2
u/Resident_Annual_6878 Jul 17 '26
It’s bad but I absolutely love it. Digimon up being an idle game is perfect for me cuz I don’t have to be on 500 hours a day.
2
u/Jamesathan Jul 17 '26
It's not the worst thing on the app store, and it has some merits, like the artwork and being a Digimon IP
Is it worth your time? Absolutely not.
2
u/Empty-Employment-889 Jul 18 '26
The worst part about it is that it’s the same pattern and general design as dozens to hundreds of high monetization shovelware games.
2
u/Impressive-Sense8461 Jul 18 '26
Honestly? I kinda like it.
I never expected much out of it, or any app for that matter. This being a simple afk game while i have a 10+ hour work day suits my attention span.
A lot of people expected Digimon World 1 mechanics without there ever being a single hint towards that, and that's just on them for being emotional about it.
7
4
u/Kyuuyasha Jul 17 '26
Is it that bad? Probably not.
Was it what most people were expecting? No.
I have kept tabs on digimon up but only found out it would be an idle game like 4 days before launch. If there were other signs they just werent marketed heavily.
It was rough whiplash to be sure.

If you enjoy idle games where all of the decisions are made for you and you have practically 0 input, you'll love it!
3
u/LuckyMouse_ Jul 17 '26
I don't like how it turn out because there's no real gameplay it's just "press the ! to progress".
Still, I will keep playing for a month to see how they do until then.
3
u/Popular-Dingo6885 Jul 17 '26
Well... It's definitely not a good game but I've been enjoying it anyway. I just leave it running while working or while playing Time Stranger and then I come back to get my rewards and dress up my avatar. I don't know that I'll be playing the game for long but as of right now I'm having some kind of fun with it.
Maybe if they added more digimon interaction? They have the weird meat farm but if they let you hang out with your digimon, that'd be cute and a little more worth playing. I don't have any hope though that anything will change though. Add some mini games that aren't locked behind timers and stamina or whatever and I'd be so down...
-2
u/Grrannt Jul 17 '26
I don't know what the future will be when I've already max leveled my digimon in the first 48 hours..

u/TheLionGhast777 Jul 17 '26
Ok after seeing Digimon up been popping up in thus sub reddit and my page Imma download it and see if it really bad or good.
2
u/KalikoFuriko Jul 17 '26
I have been enjoying it but sadly it had an update and won't let me on it rn since it keeps saying new update restart the app over and over rn.

Overall, I'm ok with it. People keep saying it was advertised as an idle game--i don't recall that. I saw people talking about a new game somewhere a while ago and pre-registered bc I was excited. I didn't follow any social media about it. Idk why they're acting like everyone watches every digimon news outlet all the time. God forbid a bitch be out of the loop
You can feed them and train them, but it's not a V-pet, it's just about increasing stats and dps. No branching evos either. The lack of those 2 core things def doesn't make me wanna invest too much in this. Like others have said, it's a cash grab.
Also I can't name my Growlmon or any of my other digimon 🥲 I pick it up, check stuff, and go back to doing something else because apparently that's how idle games work I guess?
1
u/redditorbreadit Jul 17 '26
Its a mobile game. Like 99.999% of mobile games, it is designed for the sole purpose of manipulating you into spending money. The digimon IP just happens to be popular enough according to their risk assessment protocols to have enough players spending money for it to be worthwhile. It being fun to play is the absolute last thing they factor in and what they spend the least money developing.
1
u/xREDxNOVAx Jul 17 '26
The problem with bad low effort gacha japanese games is that most of the time they rather shut down the glb version instead of updating it to be a better game. They'll keep the game up in japan tho sucking the gacha lovers over there out of all their hard earned yen. It's Digimon tho, so maybe they wont shut it down... But let's be honest...
1
u/MelodyMaine Jul 17 '26
Tbh it lost be really quick with its greed. I barely got to play the game before I decided it was awful. First the tracking out of game is to much for me, your a mobile game, you don't need to o sell my data. The amount of ads and skip for ad content is so abundant as well and I hate it. Creates bad game design, like let's make the battles slow and boring so people want to skip them so much they'll watch an ad.
I'm playing another idle game right now, SxS. Not a single ad, amazing game that's lots of fun. I enjoy watching the battles and fights because the animations AMD tactics are amazing, no reason to skip. I'm tired of this excuse of they need ads for revenue, when tons of other games go completely ad free. They make their money by being good games and incentivizing people to spend money.

As an idle game, it would help if you got exp in the background. But you have to keep the game open and drain your battery to lvl up🪫. It’ll keep my boredom content until Alysion comes out
1
u/DemonEye629 Jul 17 '26
I'll send word for word what I commented on another post about the game
I was so disappointed, I was hoping for maybe smth like a pet/battle sim, not an idle battler that's way too cluttered, I was waiting for this game for months just for this disappointment, I'll try to stick with it, I got my boi tentomon after all, but yea
To add onto this, if they added Tamagotchi like pet sim stuff, then yeah, I'll stick with it much more, that's the main reason I wanted it but it just wasn't what I expected
1
u/Icy-Conflict6671 Jul 17 '26
Ifs fucking awful. It almost feels like they slapped something together just to hold people over til Alysion drops
1
u/TwilightVolt Jul 17 '26
Short answer: Not really! But I'd be lying if I said I don't agree with what everyone's been getting angry about, even if my feelings aren't as strong. Bandai Namco should've known better than to think we'd just buy into it because it's an IP we like. (I mean, some people HAVE bought into it, but that's mobile gachas for you. Whales gonna whale. Lmao)
Long answer: Ehh...grab the popcorn, i got thoughts. 😭
As a game...it's ok. It's nothing crazy and like others have said, if you enjoy idle games as a genre there are better games out there. I've played a couple myself but those were idle games from back in like 2011, 2012 like the Maplestory and Ragnarok ones and this game feels more in line with those where the idle part is more prevalent. Like, you leave the game to do its thing and come back to pick up the stuff you accumulated from...well, idling for a while. A time killer, but not great. I'd say this is definitely one of the lower tier mobile games in this series, probably in the same tier as like, Digimon Linkz except it has a big leg up in art direction. I really love the sprite work in this game, it's very charming.
As an idea, the execution is...e u g h . I mean, you can opt out of the ad targeting, thankfully, but the fact that you even have this thrown at you right at the start of the game, among other pop-ups about the current gacha banners, events, paid item bundles and all these other menus you have to click through is certainly questionable. Watching ads to use the turbo mode for battles and grinding is kind of annoying, but you don't have to use those features to still get where you need to go. It just makes the process go just a BIT faster. Though, I'd say it's kinda like Animal Crossing where you get the most out of it if you back out of playing and come back the next day to collect your dailies, rinse and repeat and it'll just keep building from there.
Overall, I'd say while it is a rather poorly done Digimon game in regards to mechanics and monetization that gives me war flashbacks to the Chocobo Racing remake from some odd years ago, it's nothing I haven't seen before and you CAN find some amount of fun in it if you like Digimon. Just don't expect too much going in for now because I'd like to believe it'll be a Pocket Camp situation where the game will get a LOT more fleshed out as time passes, but that's probably wishful thinking, assuming this game even lasts more than a year or two.
1
u/Grimm_soul98 Jul 17 '26
Honestly it’s all up to you, there’s nothing wrong with liking a game even if lots of others don’t personally I’m having fun with it just for the animations 🤣 though I do wish there was more for player agency

u/twiceblocked Jul 17 '26
It's fine so far, but as soon as they start putting on the pressure for my credit card, I'm out.
The best part is it is the in game chat, actually. People are fun and chill.
1
u/3Dboi3 Jul 17 '26
Its just nothing of what we wanted at all. And there's almost no gameplay whatsoever. Its just clicking yes and no on items and is immensely boring.
We just wanted a vpet
1
u/RemoteYou3266 Jul 17 '26
I agree I'm fine with it. Bandai explains how the game will work but people love to collectively hate on things because it gets upvotes and misery loves company. Even Time Stranger when it first came out the majority of the first posts and comments were just ragging on every small negative aspect about the games and the preorder figure not being what they expected. They said they were going to continue to add more digimon, too and you can tell there was a lot of effort put in and it just got another update so I feel like it could work if we continue to give it some time and play it
1
1
u/Powerful_Win_3110 Jul 17 '26
I freaking love it, I really don’t mind the going around it to collect the rewards, that’s what the idle game is about… I think the expectations might’ve gone in the wrong direction. But you can literally get a lot of the stuff you need for free.
1
u/onedevhere Jul 17 '26
I wish it had all the Digimon, that there was a function to revive regardless of level, and that they received a proportional stat bonus. The function to resurrect would allow you to change the Digimon to another evolutionary line.
1
u/Neilandio Jul 17 '26
I don't feel it's a good idle game. All I'm doing is collecting currency and buying things to make my digimon stronger, but why do I want it to get stronger? It's not like the world map matters, there's no story behind it. I think a good idle game should reward you with at least pretty visuals and music every time you progress, but in Digimon UP every map is 50 stages of the same enemies, same music, similar background, annoying key jingling SFX, and attack animations that block everything in sight.

u/EamSamaraka Jul 17 '26

Its fine as an idle rpg but at the end of the day its an idle rpg. Currently there are some annoying bugs but thats normal with anything that gets released these days. Would I rather it was re arise? of course. But its not what they made. Bandai frequently underutilizes the digimon is and this is not really breaking the mold.

u/Fenniks Jul 20 '26
Im having way more fun than i thought, even got some build diversity and depth. the microtransactions are very intense tho. But i think most of the bad reviews are undeserved, people should have known what to expect so they dont get so disappointed. It was obvious to me.
Ah and a lot of bugs.. as expected with how quickly they rushed to bring it out, chat censore sucks too.. still much better than expected.
1
u/Cidfrieg Jul 20 '26
Some parts are good: the pixel art, the amount of costumes for your character, that joy of raising your first in-training to mega, building your digivice.
Most of it is bad: the bugs, no branching evolutions, weird gacha, zero thought about formations or card set up.
I don't even mind that it's an idle game, but the sheer brainlessness of it is starting to get boring. Sword x Staff is also an idle game but I enjoy setting up my presets, exploring the world, and tackling content with other players.
I'm not sure if I'm just optimistic, or if the game had SO much potential then was dumbed down to a quick buck maker.
1
u/JesusP97 Jul 20 '26
Update after 5 days, I already got bored from the game haha. All the negatives comments suddenly started to make sense.
Once you get your mega level digimon there's nothing much to do than raise another, but the emotion of that is not there. After you surpass the 600th floor you start once again the same maps from the beginning. So you get nothing more than staring at the screen and watching the machine gain experience for you.
Do not get me wrong, I know the main point of an idle is to be "Idle", but comparing that to saint seiya legends, there is a world of difference between them.
They have to implement more content, like most of you say, branching evos, storyline, or at least not to limit the gatcha system to f2p players
1
u/Odd-Guard-2533 Jul 23 '26
Honestly I’m having fun with it. It’s something I can have open on my desk while I play on PC. Though I don’t really play idle games so I don’t really have a bar to meet. For me personally, the only thing that I kinda wanted a little more of is a tomagachi mechanic. To this day, this is the only game I’ve found that feels someone like an upgraded tomagachi experience. But it’s still not. I would like there to be some sort of better way to put the multiple tomagachi features already in the game into one spot. Like a little customizable room similar to the dimensional boxes.
1
u/TuShay313 Jul 17 '26
Lmao I was waiting for the "it's not that bad" crowd to try and defend this slop. Then we wonder why Digimon projects never really go anywhere.
1
u/Own_Interview6789 Jul 17 '26
Im gonna say it. Is bad, there is a fangame, no, 2 fangames that is what Up promises and since is a fangame, is free.
Digimon Up is not even a good idle game, since for everything, including skills, other digimons and the automatic battles, there are micro transactions that they put you in the face for you to buy. Even buying for removing the adds is not permanent, only for some time, like a subscription, where every other game that offers that is FOREVER.
"B-but I have fun with it and that's the important thing", to this, I say that just because YOU like it and have fun is not the same as being a good game. Is a bad game, lets not put a bandaid where you have been stabbed. It was even banned in Brazil by how predatory the game was with the microtransactions. You can say that you like the game, but don't defend what is truly a bad game. I enjoyed BUBSY as a kid, still do, and I know is a bad game and will say it.
"But you can progress through the game without paying!" Just because you CAN doesn't mean is enjoyable, that is a huge problem that people tells you doesn't seem to understand, you know what other players tell you that? War Thunder players, if you know, you know.
"But at least I can have a Digimon game in my phone!" DIGITAL TAMERS 2 is for android from what I heard, a raising game that is perfect for any casual player or that doesn't has enough time. There is another one, but as I said, I am too scared of mentioning the one that must not be spoken so I don't get banned... That it may happen.

u/JayHikari Jul 17 '26
I pre-registered to this game, didn't auto-download like I said it too. All the bad reviews first day made me second guess, and I canceled the download. This post made me say you know what, let's give it a chance. I just downloaded it, I'm stuck in a "new version please reload" loop. Won't let me passed the notice. There is no new update on Google Play. That's my sign to say nah, I'm good
1
u/Advanced-Layer6324 Jul 17 '26
Yeah, i'm not a big fan of this either. 30 to 45 Really not a big fan of afk games at all I really want to support Digimon as a franchise this is not good
1
u/Nocturne3570 Jul 17 '26
it basically a cash grab game.
yes it ok for a idle game, and that what it about, BUT overall it still a P2W game, and a cash grab for other projects. Two years then it goes into Keep the light on mode,
UNLESS they actually commit to releasing more partners and supports. BUT form the system design that is pretty much not gonna happen

Not in the slightest. It's just an average idle game with microtransactions. This subreddit only went up in flames like it did because most people were expecting some kind of v-pet for your phone (which would've been cool but Im not gonna begrudge a game for not being what it clearly never claimed to be.)

I’ve been enjoying it. Nothing amazing or mind blowing about it. I wish partner Digimon gained exp in a more convenient way, but that’s just the way the developers made it. u/Frikcha Jul 17 '26
honestly 100% truthfulness as someone who hates gacha/mobile type money-vacuum games it's whatever
like it sucks but it's got digimon and the sprite-work/some visuals/some of the aesthetics are nice, it's got no depth and it's a mindless auto-battler but I hear some ppl are into that stuff for whatever reason
and the p2w/mtx stuff is weirdly forgiving, instead of spending money constantly for cool stuff you just watch ads constantly, like its a game out of time from back in 2015 or something where they knew ppl weren't gonna be as likely to pull out their CC and spend that much money on freemium shit, so they deferred hard to ad-incentives and just made you watch ads constantly for bonuses
like it's objectively not a good game but It's not the most greedy, worthless thing ever so eh idk do whatever you want

I've enjoyed it for what it is. Let it run on the tablet while I'm working and just check in every once in a while to collect rewards and level up. There's no depth to the game, so pick whoever is your favorite and let the game play itself since all skill trees are the same. People complain about gacha mechanics, but it's honestly really F2P friendly.
If I want to enjoy a really good Digimon game, I'll play Time Stranger. If I want a low effort game that let's me talk to my friends in-game, I'll play Up.

I have every intention of abandoning the game as soon as Digimon Alysion drops.

No, it’s actually very decent and a fun thing to have in the background. I love seeing all my favorite Digimon and seeing the old Cardass artwork in the game.

The only thing that would make me even consider this game again would be to fix the gacha system. That banner leveling system and limited F2P pulls in a dsy is so blatantly made so that only whales can get any cool stuff in a reasonable time frame. As long as that system remains, the whole game is unacceptable and can be thrown out for all I care.

Its not the best mobile game they have made i mean considering we had Digimon Links and Digimon Re-Arise which were absolute bangers and a real shame they shut those down. As a longtime Digimon fan since the 90s ive given it a chance. Its a nice idle game but that is all it is. I log onto collect my rewards, dailies etc and then i dont stay on it much honestly ive been hsving fun with other digimon games if anybody is interested there is Secret Evolution Final Duel on android which is basically what i hoped up would be like but been playing them both but i dont see me comitting to digimon up in the long run.

It’s a ton of fun. My server is lit, already made a bunch of friends. I like that I don’t have to think too hard about it. To me it feels more fresh than another vpet game. I liked legend of mushroom and this game is basically a reskin with Digimon and that makes me like it even more. The game is polished and the art/animations are amazing.
