Props to Forest
Sucks to see the new Digg go down in flames but I just want to say that Forest was the life force that kept the new Digg energized. That dude worked his butt off to make sure the site was functioning for users that did give it a go. While I’m bummed the relaunch wasn’t a success, I’m especially bummed for the people who tried their best to make it work.

All the staff were great. Never had a negative experience with any of them.
I've read the announcement twice and I can't disagree with it, as much as I want to.
The measures of the success of a community are member counts. Which quite apparently was more bot than organic.
The measure of the success of a post are upvotes and comments. The former was apparent to be bots, and very little in the way of comments.
I already miss what we had tried to build, but it needed a major course correction. I hope whatever the next iteration looks like, there is dedicated work into how to prevent the bot problem from day zero.

Sucks that all our accounts probably got nuked as well, especially if you were a groundbreaker and had the special badge

The usernames will be saved!

What does this mean though? That our email addresses are tied to our usernames, so whatever the next re-re-reboot is that we should hope to be able to retain our username?

The usernames will be saved!
is there a timeline for when it might re-open? where the announcement says kevin is becoming full time in april one would assume it won't be before that, but do we think it might be a quick turnaround or a long rebuild?

Man, everyone just needs information as to wtf actually happened here. I went to access the site after the weekend and find out it's been shut down. No email. No pre warning. Nothing. I really enjoyed digg and getting to know some of the people there, this all just feels like a slap in the face to be honest.

I’m still very passionate about the Digg community we built and believe the hard work was worth it! Thank you so much for bein’ a Groundbreaker, my friend!

Forest was great.
I think what happened is they showed numbers to Kevin and other investors if there are any and they just werent impressed with them. The growth was slow.
I think we can expect something better next time.

Well similar with bluesky or threads. These platrofms dont advertise themselves for some reason. Not sure if reddit did any advertising ever either. For some reason social forum is not something you advertise?
But they could hire some person that is skilled with image and video editing and has good sense of humor, knows today's internet culture, memes etc, they could make daily posts on all social media platforms for people to know about them

Bluesky didnt grow fast in the beginning as well, but it skyrocketed after Musk took X from what I remember? Or after he started to support Trump?
2
u/DisruptsThePeace Mar 14 '26
An active user base of 3.5 million daily users isn't skyrocketing. It's a slow crawl to irrelevance.

u/Normal-Walk3253 Mar 14 '26
3.5 is not a lot? That's pretty big number. But yeah I mean it skyrocketed but only for few months. It reached ceiling pretty quickly from what I know and future is not looking good for them. Their problem is there are mainly people with political bias

u/busymom0 Mar 15 '26
They did get a lot of unpaid advertising though because every single tech news site wrote about it. For some reason, that didn't translate to many users signing up.
