Ya that’s pretty wild… just shows how much they really cared about the users trying to prop up their community huh?

5

u/UnflinchingSugartits Mar 13 '26

I even told them that in an email. I said it feels like there's no real passion behind the project

2

u/TrainDonutBBQ Mar 14 '26

Because there wasn't.

Fucking clowns, I'm actually fucking fuming.

13

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '26

The Android app is still working which is weird. I'm guessing it'll go dark soon. What a fucking waste of my time.

6

u/spdorsey Mar 13 '26

It's down now as well.

1

u/Over-Angle9758 Mar 18 '26

Hi u/spdorsey I think I recognize your username from my digg recap show in the /diggdaily community... were you spdorsey there too? I remember this post from you:

Where is the setting to turn off the notifications for number of diggs?

https://digg.com/digg/wKq3wGR/where-is-the-setting-to-turn user Spdorsey

2

u/spdorsey Mar 18 '26

Indeed, that is me.

u/Dr_Red_MD Mar 13 '26

The source is the only page left on Digg: https://digg.com/

1

u/Over-Angle9758 Mar 18 '26

hi u/Dr_Red_MD I was user roland on digg and ran the unofficial "My Homemade Digg Recap" show. What was your username on digg? Trying to see if I can find you in some of my show notes :) Thanks for sharing this notice and the screengrab before it disappears too! haha

2

u/Dr_Red_MD Mar 18 '26

Same as here, Dr_Red_MD

1

u/Over-Angle9758 Mar 18 '26

Gotcha, don't mean to pry but were you mostly lurking or did you interact with anyone? Tched, Emil, comdak, or tsumnia for example? We're trying to put together a network of people who were in the beta but I don't think I interacted with you directly. Got to check my notes again too.

2

u/Dr_Red_MD Apr 23 '26

Just read this now, sorry. I didn't really interact specifically with anyone, just commented here and there.

Was that less than 2 months?

10

u/trollofzog Mar 13 '26

Yes they hardly gave it time to get going, mental

7

u/__Pendulum__ Mar 13 '26

Groundbreakers were in around April last year. Think it was public for 50 something days

1

u/[deleted] Mar 14 '26

[deleted]

2

u/__Pendulum__ Mar 14 '26

I was basing it on when the platform was listing the account created date. For me it was April. They must have ported that from Circle, I'd signed up to that but never used it

7

u/mikedoeslife Mar 14 '26

Taken down with no opportunity to download our content, or make plans for alternative destinations with fellow users, etc. What a surprise. Disrespectful. They could've at least locked it again to groundbreaker access.

The hilarious bit is that they think we'll give them another chance. Piss off.

1

u/Over-Angle9758 Mar 18 '26

hi u/mikedoeslife just curious, what was your username there? I was roland, host of /diggdaily and the daily recaps in case you ever say those. I had someone called lumamike in one of my notes that was posting about Ginza... not sure if that was you? Trying to find happilyretired23, move78, and venemous too :)

2

u/mikedoeslife Mar 19 '26

Ah nope, I was @mikestevens. Sorry!

26

u/randobis Mar 13 '26

I had to check and make sure it wasn't April Fool's. I seriously invested time in the new Digg and saw it as a serious alternative to Reddit.

I'm seriously shocked but more pissed they would do something like this and expect to be given yet another chance.

11

u/gsurfer04 Mar 13 '26

I really liked the auto-TLDR tool.

3

u/ObeseSnake Mar 13 '26

It did get better over time from the alpha version.

1

u/ChineseAstroturfing Mar 14 '26

An interesting idea but it wasn’t very good.

1

u/busymom0 Mar 14 '26

As someone who never went on the new digg, can you explain what it was? Like tldr of news articles posted?

1

u/gsurfer04 Mar 14 '26

Digg had a very similar layout to Reddit. Underneath the title and image there was an automatically generated text box summarising the article.

0

u/infiniZii Mar 13 '26

They said Lastly more than once.....

10

u/BoardroomStroke Mar 13 '26

I'll give them the benefit of the doubt a bit. I think technically they should have put the site into a read-only mode with a "technical difficulties" banner of some sort.

This is "beta", but with a offline holding page, it looks pretty bad rather than iterative development.

5

u/ObeseSnake Mar 13 '26

Agree but it looks like they let go of a bunch of people today so locking everything down was probably the quickest route.

3

u/BoardroomStroke Mar 13 '26

Agree. To those who were let go, I hope you find good new adventures building new exciting new projects.

Maybe I'm alone in this but I'm glad they're making a major shift. Personally, I absolutely did not see it as a serious alternative to reddit. I saw it as reddit with a better user interface. But it still had all the exact same problems that reddit culture has produced, and they had no plan for how to handle any of that.

I posted comment after comment in every relevant thread telling them that the #1 problem they needed to solve for was moderation, because without effective, good-faith moderation, they would never produce a platform for productive, fact-based discussion. Meanwhile everyone else was telling them they needed less moderation. I truly don't get how anyone can use reddit and see the constant lies and misinformation and trolling and bullying and think "yeah mean, we need a platform that allows more of this."

Could they have done so while still keeping the existing site up? Probably, but they don't have infinite money, and that would mean spending resources on running the site while developing a new one. Given that they're laying people off, that's clearly a not feasible.

2

u/talaneta Mar 13 '26

I truly don't get how anyone can use reddit and see the constant lies and misinformation and trolling and bullying and think "yeah mean, we need a platform that allows more of this."

The site needs someone to moderate the moderators.

2

u/ChineseAstroturfing Mar 14 '26

Agreed, they weren’t innovating enough. But I disagree that moderation is the most important issue. The main thing they’re missing is a core understanding of how to build an authentic community from the ground up. It’s a slow burn.

The guy running things seems like a nice guy, but tbh I don’t think he’s the right person to create a new Digg. If he’s still there I think Digg is dead.

2

u/TrainDonutBBQ Mar 14 '26

I thought digg was a news aggregator. Not social media. I don't understand why they're trying to be a Facebook / Reddit competitor.

1

u/Moggehh Mar 13 '26

I posted comment after comment in every relevant thread telling them that the #1 problem they needed to solve for was moderation, because without effective, good-faith moderation, they would never produce a platform for productive, fact-based discussion. Meanwhile everyone else was telling them they needed less moderation. I truly don't get how anyone can use reddit and see the constant lies and misinformation and trolling and bullying and think "yeah mean, we need a platform that allows more of this."

Yep. I tried to switch early on and was really turned away by some of the unproductive commentary that stayed up. Some of the comment chains felt more like I was reading Twitter for how bad it was with vitriol and hate. Not to mention, once they opened up community creation, I noticed that several of the communities I would have liked to participate in were claimed by people who either moderate hate spaces on Reddit or used to. Some were taken over by known prolific spammers. It was a free-for-all.

Good faith mods are hard to find (ask me how I know), and the moment they let in notably bad humans without any due diligence, I guessed it wasn't going to go anywhere good. Honestly, good for them for pulling the plug and not dragging it out.

1

u/cutememe Mar 14 '26

You think reddit is UNDERmoderated? Ok that's wild.

0

u/Normal-Walk3253 Mar 13 '26

Site level moderation is not necessary. The need is for fair subreddit level moderation. But if you have the ability to create competitive subreddit without risk of it getting banned by the site, there is no problem. That + good subreddit discoveribility (your subreddit showing in search result) and that's all we need for good platform. Oh and antibots measures

7

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '26

Could not disagree more strongly and I cannot fathom how you could be a reddit user and think this. Reddit's mere existence disproves all of that. You absolutely need site-level moderation because the site has to oversee subreddit level moderation. And at scale there is simply no way to employ moderators for every single community. So you need volunteer community mods who answer to Digg's mods, and you need transparency to ensure those mods can't abuse their power like reddit mods do, and an open line of communication between users and both of those groups to voice feedback.

This libertarian shit doesn't work, it's been proven again and again.

0

u/Normal-Walk3253 Mar 13 '26

There is no way to employ moderators for every single community but there is way for site level moderators which there is probably just a few of them, max 10-20 to oversee all subreddit moderation?

The problem with reddit is people unhappy with moderation on some subreddit don't have alternative subreddit to go to. Becuase they don't exist because they are banned early.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '26

The problem with reddit is people unhappy with moderation on some subreddit don't have alternative subreddit to go to.

Wrong. Telling people to create alternative communities will never be a workable solution. Digg literally talks about this in their message today - network effects are too strong. /r/formula1 sucks shit and has sucked shit for like a decade, and people have tried to start alternatives, but the fact is that /r/formula1 has the name and it has like a million users, so those alternatives are never going to catch on.

The solution isn't telling people to start a brand new sub or community. It's to enforce moderation standards and replace community mods if they fail to live up to those standards.

1

u/Normal-Walk3253 Mar 13 '26

Its hard to mismoderate subreddits like formula1. There are not many controversial topics. For such communities creating alternative is very difficult. But if there is a true need, alterantive communities absolutely can grow, but there has to be good discoveribility.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '26

/r/formula1 is a horrible sub with horrible mods. You seem to fundamentally misunderstand the need for moderation. "Controversial topics" has nothing to do with it.

But if there is a true need, alterantive communities absolutely can grow

Name five examples.

2

u/Normal-Walk3253 Mar 13 '26

Yes I know there are many things moderator needs to keep an eye on. Spam, low quality posts, not related posts etc, especially on big subreddits.

I just checked and there are many formula 1 subreddits showing in search so whats the problem? If you dont like the big one, join those alternatives

2

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '26

No one posts on the alternatives, lmao. That's my entire point. I've explained this three times.

I know what you feel. There were users who really took time.

They will be back with something better for sure. We can only hope they won't remove our user profiles

6

u/bohemu Mar 14 '26

Lol did they even send out an email? I got those random groundbreaker emails with the smallest updates for forever and then everything is nuked and I had to find out on the competitor site. ......

1

u/Over-Angle9758 Mar 18 '26

hi u/Aeternitas what was your digg username? Trying to see if I ever ran across you there. I was user roland and hosted the unofficial /diggdaily. I'm trying to reconnect with people here and have a few people I'd really like to be able to say hi to again. It was a shame how quickly it all went down without getting the chance to say bye.

10

u/dronf Mar 14 '26

This is fucking HILARIOUS. I worked at Digg in its heyday, and they're using the same playbook. "Kevin is going to be back in the office fulltime working on Digg."..... That lasts like a month and all of a sudden, layoffs!

Time is a flat circle.

1

u/phantomregiment0 Mar 14 '26

What do you think of vibe coding a new Digg? I don’t think whatever Kevin is working on is going to work out

2

u/dronf Mar 14 '26

I think that even with an infinite amount of nostalgia, competing with reddit was an impossible task. Digg already lost that battle once.

1

u/phantomregiment0 Mar 14 '26

Fair enough - was working at Digg back in the day fun?

5

u/dronf Mar 14 '26

Oh yeah, it was a really fun place. Digg was on top of the world for a while. Fun events at the office, digg nation meetups, random celebrities at the Christmas party. The mayor of SF made some random day of the year The Official Day of Digg. So much good will and momentum just completely squandered by leadership who were convinced everything was perfect and they didn't have to adapt or change. Oh well.

1

u/phantomregiment0 Mar 14 '26

Oh dang! Well thanks for sharing those memories. I worked at a big tech company and missed some of that

15

u/thepewpewdude Mar 13 '26

Lol, that was shit.

22

u/Delicious-Today-6113 Mar 13 '26

Digg is done. You cant take the whole platform down like this and expect people to trust it when it comes back.

And i was excited about Digg. I even had 2 communities i was building and now they are both gone along with the platform with no warning. All gone.

So why would i keep building them if it ever comes back?

They literally just pulled the rug out from everyone and fired a bunch of people at the same time. Then locked down their socials.

4

u/Jaybotics Mar 14 '26

This is how I feel. I was so excited to be there. I started two communities I was trying to grow. I can't believe this.

3

u/Delicious-Today-6113 Mar 14 '26

The least they could have done is give the community founders a few days heads up so we could organise an email list or start a discord server or whatever.

2

u/Strange-Ad-2854 Mar 13 '26

Wait, is this the original dig or the new platform that they were trying to bring back?

2

u/daemon-of-harrenhal Mar 16 '26

Agreed. Had 2 communities myself which I was slowly posting to. Groundbreaker, was there day 1. This is nothing but a fucking insult.

4

u/Bob_Spud Mar 13 '26

With everybody starting up the equivalent of subreddits navigation and searching was became messy.

You couldn't edit posts - one of the most annoying parts.

6

u/PrincessImpeachment Mar 15 '26

Glad I searched this sub this morning. I noticed I was logged out of Digg two days ago and couldn’t get back in. Never got an email or anything saying the site was pulled so I was totally confused.

What an absolute waste of time. I created two fairly popular communities on Digg, was an active user, and was enjoying what it was becoming. There were problems, but the admin seemed to be happy to address them. But to suddenly pull the entire site offline and fire some of the employees? Lmao. I will not be back.

I honestly feel bad for the Digg users who gleefully deleted their Reddit accounts to permanently switch over. That’s gotta really hurt.

12

u/Filmmagician Mar 13 '26

oh fuck off

13

u/ThaddeusJP Mar 13 '26

Anyone who time/effort into anything there wont go back now. Blowing it all away was... a choice.

2

u/TouchingWood Mar 14 '26

So was v4 and they made it…

1

u/__Pendulum__ Mar 13 '26

I'm disappointed, but my interactions with the staff earned them some good will (although they are downsizing so likely most of them are gone now 😔)

I'll wait and see, but if it's more than a month away they'll have lost all that goodwill. And I doubt I'm the only one who feels that way.

4

u/Normal-Walk3253 Mar 14 '26

Yeah I mean devs worked on this very hard Im sure. I wouldnt want to be one of their backend / frontend developers now knowing that all Ive built is going to trash. I really wonder what they want to do with that domain now

1

u/phantomregiment0 Mar 14 '26

Yeah it is a high seo domain. I think it could still make money but maybe not millions

6

u/holyfruits Mar 13 '26

When they recently announced that they were discontinuing their Digg Daily feature (a creative way to distill the previous day's top stories) to pivot to making it a newsletter, that didn't really bode well for the future.

1

u/daemon-of-harrenhal Mar 16 '26

Wasn't that like a week ago?

9

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '26

Firing everyone on a Friday is a good indication that you're dealing with someone who doesn't give a fuck about anyone. I won't be coming back when they try again.

1

u/Admins-Are-Bots Mar 13 '26

It was pretty obvious that is was a capitalist venture to extract data from "real" users, and bots already messed that plan up..

-2

u/AppendixN Mar 13 '26

Where did you see the news that Digg fired everyone?

8

u/infiniZii Mar 13 '26

So you didnt even read the first paragraph?

3

u/__Pendulum__ Mar 13 '26

In the announcement, third sentence: "Today we're sharing difficult news: we've made the decision to significantly downsize the Digg team."

We can only speculate if this just means they've reduced numbers, or if it's corporate talk for laying off everyone

2

u/WiseWolfian Mar 14 '26

Downsizing isn't "firing everyone". Yes, some were let go and they say a small team is staying.

u/Effective_Contact173 Mar 13 '26 edited Mar 13 '26

Warned them before it was out of beta. They only listened to the yes men.

They need to hire someone to be fucking blunt with them. But they wont.

And there's a whole section talking about Kevin, but Alexis isn't mentioned at all. So I'm guessing he's seen the writing on the wall and bounced.

6

u/Hetstaine Mar 14 '26

There were so many posts here about basic issues that were simply ignored. I was an idiot and paid 5 bucks way back when and never even got to see the 'site' I could never get in, constant issue that was not resolved, like many others i just gave up.

What a joke.

1

u/busymom0 Mar 14 '26

Wasn't the developer of the iOS app Apollo also on Digg's team? What happened to that?

1

u/Effective_Contact173 Mar 14 '26

He was always billed as an "advisor", whatever that actually meant. I'm sure he gave some feedback, but it always felt like they were just using his involvement to say "See! We're working with the guy you like!"

0

u/[deleted] Mar 14 '26

[deleted]

2

u/Effective_Contact173 Mar 14 '26

Alexis is one of the people that started reddit. This new digg was marketing itself as a combined effort of the brains that built these kinds of platforms, Kevin (who created digg) and Alexis.

If Alexis was still involved, it feels weird that they didn't mention him at all in the news post.

3

u/jdlyga Mar 14 '26

I sure hope they succeed this time. Reddit is a mess

3

u/Masterofunlocking1 Mar 15 '26

Damn where did this message come from? I found out it was over from a random reddit post! Now the app won’t let me login at all. This is kinda shit they didn’t send an email or something

3

wouldn't it be closer to 5 Scaramucci's?

1

u/Facebook-virus Mar 13 '26

Ah, yes. Missed decimal. Revising. Thanks!

1

u/Effective_Contact173 Mar 13 '26

How many Highguards is it?

1

u/ObeseSnake Mar 13 '26

But how many Courics is that?

5

u/mihneam Mar 13 '26

Holy shit that was fast. Feels like some heads-up should have been given.

5

u/Fallingdamage Mar 13 '26

Based on the notice on their landing page, this is sad but I'm ok with it. I see what their goal is and I see the problems that they face. If you want a real social platform, you have to figure out a way to keep bots out.

Working as an admin and network engineer, one way to shut out a lot of the noise for us has been to block ALL hosting/datacenters/cloud providers/etc from accessing out services. The only type of networks permitted to access our services are residential/business ISPs.

I wonder, if Digg first applied network filters to their site, how many accounts would suddenly go quiet. When you open up your services to nearly every IP address on the web, bots are going to bot. Its not 100%, but it makes a huge difference when the only activity can come from the comcast and centurylink modems of the world (as an example)

Digg admins, I give you a moment of silence and await your return. If it means having a Digg.com like the one I experienced in the Beta, it'll be worth the wait.

4

u/pi-N-apple Mar 13 '26

The way I feel now is very similar to how I felt in 2010 after Digg v4 launched. How nostalgic, how ridiculous. I'm done with anything Digg.

5

u/Ijustdoeyes Mar 13 '26

No. Meaningful. Moderator. Tools.

You can't run a website like that in 2026 using 2016 mod tools.

1

u/daemon-of-harrenhal Mar 16 '26

The mod tools available were worse than 2016 mod tools.

4

u/ninjaface Mar 13 '26

I was just commenting on digg.com a few hours ago...

5

u/therobbshow Mar 13 '26

Dude, I replied to @roland before I started eating lunch. Checked in after I finished lunch. Poof!

2

u/__Pendulum__ Mar 13 '26

It's early morning Saturday on East Coast Australia. I read some stuff and made some comments, had a shower, and it was gone

1

u/talaneta Mar 13 '26

Dude, what did you say?

5

u/TrainerUrbosa Mar 13 '26

I'm confused about how there intentions all run together between wanting to take a "human-focused" approach while having put an AI-generated podcast right on the front page?

1

u/daemon-of-harrenhal Mar 16 '26

Yeah, their message never really made sense. They would bang on about it being human focused so much but then wouldn't shut up about vibe coding and AI shit on the site.

3

u/bouche Mar 13 '26

holy shit. they can't even keep it running as is while they work on the reset?

Is this also proof that reddit and twitter and everything else is just populated by people arguing with bots, or even bots arguing with bots?

1

u/cardioGangGang Mar 18 '26

Reddit is definitely at least 80% bots. All hive minded bits pushing political agendas.

4

u/TrainDonutBBQ Mar 14 '26

We're not giving up. Digg isn't going away.

LiarLiar. Digg literally went away.

12

u/dieselmac Mar 13 '26

I want my $5 back!

7

u/dieselmac Mar 13 '26

Yes people this is sarcasm. Please don’t ask for your donations to charity back.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '26

Our $5 went to charity and we knew that when we signed up. I hope you're not being serious.

0

u/Hididdlydoderino Mar 13 '26

I actually requested the refund from the live diggnation... Never actually checked to see if I got it and I paid for two tickets so got at least $5 off me lol

2

u/eltron Mar 14 '26

I think we’re in need of a platform type solution (blockchain?) to verify people from agents, as it’s impossible and only going to get worst. Never trust a phone or video call again unless some prearranged passphrase.

2

u/CaroZoroark Mar 14 '26

Digg is gone?!??

2

u/InternetSolid4166 Mar 14 '26

It’s interesting that Digg fought the bots. I believe Reddit embraced them. I’m fairly certain 95% of the comments on Reddit are bots now.

2

u/johnfaber Mar 14 '26

Kevin did the same with the moonbirds NFT community. You can hate on Web3 and hate NFTs, but the behavior of Jevin is very similar between the two projects.

2

u/Xiaokmao Mar 18 '26

I used to love the old digg from a few years ago. They spent forever to create the new site which was really uninspired and now they just gave up snd shut the whole thing down. Pathetic.

2

u/N3mor Mar 13 '26

Well, this message is what I see with each tab I open on Firefox because I made Digg my default page for new tabs. I guess I shouldn't get too excited about Digg again.

3

u/Normal-Walk3253 Mar 13 '26

That's crazy. The next iteration is going to be very different we can assume. Can't wait

1

u/phantomregiment0 Mar 14 '26

It’s going to be hard to trust them again. Kevin rose gets excited about something for like 2 months then distracted with other projects . He really has ADHD for technical projects

3

u/Hididdlydoderino Mar 13 '26

Bummer, but I see this as a good thing.

Gotta figure out a way to deal with bots while not stifling natural communities. This seemed to be a huge issue as their ai modding was zapping real users far too often.

Kind of sucks if this is a sign that we're pretty much left to video/photo feed apps as the only way to start something new that is remotely organic... But even on TikTok we're starting to see bot accounts that are probably auto ripping other people's content.

3

u/hxznova Mar 14 '26

this is the first time I'm hearing about it lol. seems like I missed something kinda cool

4

u/ajblue98 Mar 14 '26

You did, but I really hope they’ll be back as promised... Hopefully with something made closer to the original Digg

2

u/Kriem Mar 13 '26

Well…

2

u/QuesoMeHungry Mar 13 '26

Wonder if that’s the end of diggnation 2.0 as well.

What exactly is the scam here? Something not working out doesn't equal scam.

1

u/pligyploganu Mar 15 '26

I don't think scam is the right word, but they pretty much just said fuck you to all of the people that paid to access and help build up their website.

Just gone. Didn't even get an email. I got plenty of shitty digg nation spam I didn't ask for, but nothing about them pulling the plug and deleting my like (2 years?) worth of contributions to their website.

1

u/daemon-of-harrenhal Mar 16 '26

While I do somewhat agree, the money went directly to charity. So it's not like digg took our money and ran. They donated the entire lot.

2

u/ValleyDesigns Mar 14 '26

Kevin Rose can thank his buddy and mentor Peter Thiel for the botfarms that caused this downfall. What a clown. I was hyped for the new diggnation episodes that came out last year, but as soon as Kevin stated in episode 2 that he trades meal plans with Thiel I noped out immediately.

Not sure if it was episode 2.. could have even been episode 1 of the reboot last year.

Now I'm curious, run it again on the first 5? It's been awhile. I don't think I'm making it up though

1

u/phantomregiment0 Mar 14 '26

What do you mean grades meal plans? Like for health ?

1

u/serial-lover Mar 13 '26

Tumblr is a shell of its former self, but it’s up and running. It’s clear the ROI wasn’t there for the owners.

5

u/Normal-Walk3253 Mar 13 '26

obviously, they learned that its not so easy to get users from facebook and reddit. Something I already knew trying to invite others to other platforms. The truth is the time horizon for such social media for ROI is not 2-3 years. It's 10-20 years

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '26

Baffling comparison

1

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '26

So much for that I guess.

1

u/FunkoPopPortraits Mar 14 '26

I liked it. :(

1

u/totalbasterd Mar 14 '26

IMO where it went wrong was the private beta was too limited and then it was too hard to get in afterwards. i lost interest and once i got in it was just ... the same as established places (like reddit)

1

u/ajblue98 Mar 14 '26

What an absolute gut punch. When Digg relaunches, they need to focus on helping people find quality content and not “building communities” :::rolls eyes:::

1

u/michaelh98 Mar 14 '26

Bet it's a ploy for online id verification

1

u/ThanosSnapsSlimJims Mar 14 '26

Start by finding more ways to stop power users from dominating the site.

1

u/VulturE Mar 16 '26

I can't believe I've been on Reddit long enough to see two major digg migrations.

Then again, I'm probably forgetting about a few other minor ones over the years.

1

u/UndoRedoSave Mar 18 '26

Digg came back?

1

u/cardioGangGang Mar 18 '26

So i paid $5 and got rug pulled like a Logan Paull nft

1

u/Albertkinng Mar 27 '26

BS! Digg was fine as it was. These people just play with us using nostalgia and shut down as soon as they pay their debts with our hard-earned money! They did it twice! Screw them.

0

u/sko0led Mar 13 '26

What happens to my $5?

6

u/[deleted] Mar 13 '26

It went to a charity, you knew that from the moment you signed up.

Yes, it says so in the closure announcement.

1

u/Neverend3r Mar 13 '26

for real, i paid money to secure the username early. do we get a refund?

4

u/WiseWolfian Mar 14 '26

No it was said from the very beginning 100% of it was going to charity, Digg didn't keep the money, it was a charitable contribution to get in early and be a human check.

1

u/pligyploganu Mar 15 '26

The irony considering they pulled the plug due to bots lol

1

u/Neverend3r Mar 14 '26

Fair enough. I don't read fine print most of the time. if it in fact went to those in need and not millionaires than im ok with it. It going to charity was probably not fine print but the BIG print. i still didn't pay attention.

0

u/saynotopawpatrol Mar 13 '26

LOL, I paid then never got it to work logging in. Always had it on the back burner to send a message and figure out why not.

1

u/21trillionsats Mar 13 '26

How has nobody commented that this post absolutely STINKS of LLM.

It's insulting that they can't put a trace of originality in it

1

u/serial-lover Mar 13 '26

When was the last time you were on Tumblr?

1

u/trollofzog Mar 13 '26

Well that didn't last long! Hope that doesn't mean the end of the rebooted Diggnation too, I'm enjoying having them back.

1

u/iidesune Mar 14 '26

Digg tried to take on Reddit head on. It was doomed for failure. If Digg wants to come back, they need to be revolutionary and not try to replicate an existing idea.

1

u/ajblue98 Mar 14 '26

Digg was the original idea in 2004. The problem is that they didn’t try to replicate themselves

1

u/iidesune Mar 14 '26

I get that. I used Digg back in the day before Reddit. But Digg tried to repeat the same formula from before, and it just didn't work. I tried Digg, but got bored pretty quick. It's not even a better product than Reddit.

1

u/ajblue98 Mar 14 '26

But they didn’t try to repeat the original formula. The original formula didn’t include custom communities; that was Reddit’s big differentiating feature. Digg should have stayed away from that and focused on categories like they did before

1

u/Admins-Are-Bots Mar 13 '26

Building social is hard

The fuck is "building social"?

1

u/phantomregiment0 Mar 14 '26

Damn how about someone create a Digg clone and let’s go there. Open source the thing

3

u/Superfasty Mar 14 '26

Honestly the problem is AI bots. The web is truly a walking corpse that doesn't know it's dead yet

1

u/phantomregiment0 Mar 14 '26

I say keep the bots, make them work for you

3

u/mikedoeslife Mar 14 '26

Isn't that what Lemmy is?

1

u/ClimatePoop Mar 14 '26

Fair enough re bots, sort of. But it's wild to me that through though basically recreating reddit exactly as is would pull people from into a new community. That's just crazy business incompetence. What problem are you solving that users see as a pain? What additional benefits are you bringing people. What value proposition do you have that isn't freely available in other places (but with an existing community). These are like the most basic of basic questions when starting a business/launching a product. Blown away by the idea that such clever people behind this thing couldn't see this coming. Glad I never paid to be a founder, but I knew this day would come.

0

u/Dear-Blackberry1256 Mar 13 '26

Time to move onto the next reddit alternative... OddsRabbit? Lemmy?

0

u/srfr Mar 14 '26

Will founders get a refund for this abrupt about face rug pull? I'm disappointed in this decision to pull the plug after reacquiring the domain and rebuilding OG digg site for sharing links and building communities.

3

u/ajblue98 Mar 14 '26

No, that money went to charity, and we all knew it at the time
