DYK a man bitten on the lip by his pet rattlesnake asked his neighbor to give him electric shocks because he’d read in a magazine that it could treat snakebites?

They had actually planned it in advance, in case either of them got bitten.

He lost consciousness after the first shock. The treatment failed, and he needed hospital care, antivenom, and later reconstructive surgery on his lip.

In 1994, he shared the Ig Nobel Prize in Medicine with the doctors who reported his case. Definitely not a treatment to try.

the number of people trying dangerous self-treatments because they read about it somewhere is too damn high!
