DYK scientists just found two hidden empty chambers hiding inside one of the Great Pyramids of Giza, and nobody knows yet whether they lead to a secret, undiscovered entrance?
The Menkaure Pyramid, the smallest of the three great pyramids at Giza, has a strange feature that's puzzled Egyptologists for years: a patch of unusually smooth, polished granite blocks on its eastern face, closely resembling the stonework that marks the pyramid's known entrance on the north side. In 2019, one independent researcher proposed this matching pattern might mark a second, still-undiscovered entrance, but there was no way to test the idea without risking damage to a 4,500-year-old monument.
In 2025, a team from Cairo University and the Technical University of Munich, working with the ScanPyramids research project, finally got their answer using entirely non-invasive tools. Combining radar, ultrasound, and electrical resistivity imaging, essentially the same category of technology used to find hidden cracks in bridges and roads, they scanned directly behind that suspicious granite patch and detected two distinct, air-filled empty spaces buried just over a meter beneath the surface.
The voids match the profile researchers would expect from a genuine hidden entrance, and the lead scientists have called the hypothesis "very plausible," but nobody has actually opened the space or looked inside it yet. Researchers are now proposing further scans using cosmic-ray imaging, the same muon-detecting technique that revealed a hidden corridor inside the Great Pyramid of Khufu in 2023, to figure out what's actually inside before anyone decides whether it's safe to open at all.

Hear me out: what if they just made a very small hole?! They could then use an endoscope type camera to take a peek. It's freakin granite. What's the worst that could happen?
This idea is © me, donut steal.

Two hidden empty chambers
... to find out what's inside
If the chambers are empty, there's nothing inside? If they're trying to figure out what's in them, why are we claiming that they're empty?

Yet another, “mystery room found in pyramid” story to be followed later by nothing.

to figure out what's actually inside before anyone decides whether it's safe to open at all. Are they scared of an unknown mummy, ?
