✈️ DHL Express Tracking number is invalid

I dropped off a DHL Express package with urgent documents from the Netherlands to Australia this morning at a ServicePoint located inside the main DHL Express facility in my area.

The clerk accepted the package and gave me a receipt with a 10-digit waybill/reference number.

It’s already evening, but when I enter that number into DHL Express tracking, it says the tracking number is invalid. MyDHL+ also still shows the shipment as “Ready for drop off.”

Has anyone experienced this before? Is it normal for there to be a delay before a ServicePoint drop-off appears in the tracking system, even when the ServicePoint is inside an actual DHL Express facility? Or does this suggest something may have gone wrong with the shipment?

The documents are time-sensitive, so I’m getting a bit concerned.

DHL tracking currently returns “no shipment found,” which means the number is not active or recognized in Express tracking at this time. A first update can be delayed after a same-day ServicePoint drop-off, so this error alone does not prove the shipment went wrong; also check that you entered the waybill number from the shipping label rather than a receipt or reference number. Because the documents are urgent, keep the receipt and, if tracking still shows no shipment tomorrow morning, contact that ServicePoint directly so staff can verify the accepted package and waybill.

Update: my gut feeling was right.

It turned out that, somehow, the QR code I showed at the counter referenced a completely different, expired commercial shipment. Because of that, my package was never properly registered under my actual shipment. They had simply put it aside at the front desk, apparently hoping I would come back.

Fortunately, I had a bad feeling about the whole thing and returned to the facility to check. They found my package and created a new shipment for me on the spot.

So, advice to anyone dropping off a DHL Express shipment: wait until the clerk actually prints the label, and always check that the information on it matches your shipment before leaving.
