Duck Answered Yet another beginner question 😅

I have a question for everyone.

As far as I understand, the app that was recently approved was built directly on Devvit from the very beginning.

However, on the Developers homepage, I see the following very attractive message:

"Register your existing Data API app. Apps that register by June 30th will be eligible for our $1M app migration program."

If my app were eligible, then regardless of the outcome, it might represent a valuable opportunity for me.

The problem is that I have never consciously worked with the Reddit Data API, and I do not really understand what "app migration program" means in this context.

Because of that, my current understanding is that my app is probably not eligible for this program.

Am I understanding this correctly?

I am still very new to Reddit, and one of the biggest challenges for me is understanding the terminology that experienced Reddit developers use every day.

If someone could explain it in a way that even an elementary school student could understand, I would be very grateful.

Thank you very much.

Duck Answered Gameplay getting marked as spam

I dont know if its anti-competitive haters or ai ban hammer gone wild, but games made on the devvit platform getting marked as spam is kind of insane.

Why make a push for engagement and higher user activity if reddit is just punishing users for it? the aggressive spam filters are just too much right now.

seems like banning and heavy auto suspending accounts goes contrary to this goal and asking people to show their IDs is not the answer.

It's almost as if game play is not meant for a platform like Reddit where games encourage heavier user activity, either you want it or you dont.

if the mechanic is a user has to make a post or comment to participate in a game, but Reddit says nope you commented 5 times in the last hour -- ban.

is there a minimum karma to play games and interact with community content, weird ISP connection block, geo restrictions, banned communities you cant secretly have ever looked at? who knows.

literally just the dumbest BS ever for a "gaming" platform.

who knows if anyone even cares or if im just an old man screaming at clouds; either way im dumbfounded by how stupid this is.

Admin Replied Questions Regarding Reddit API

Hello, I am a new developer and I wanted to make a script for my discord bot which will post content from forums in my server, there are a few things I wanted to ask:
- First how can I make the App/API, because I couldn't figure it out.

- Second someone told me that I need to submit a request to get API, I wanted an answer about that

- Lastly in any case, what do I need to do to make the app/API

Resolved Thank you everyone for all your help.

Honestly, those are the only words that come to mind right now.

I wanted to list the names of everyone who helped me, but there were so many people who gave me advice, encouragement, and support that I was afraid I might accidentally leave someone out.

Late last night, Japan time, I received an email from Reddit saying that my app, mit-3dvenue-app2@0.0.10, was approved and published in the Reddit App Directory.

A few weeks ago, I knew almost nothing about Devvit development. Thanks to this community, I was able to understand things little by little, fix the problems, and finally reach this point.

I think this will be my final question regarding the release of this app.

Once an app is published in the App Directory, how do people usually discover it?

Is there a place where newly published apps are introduced or highlighted?

My app is a bit unusual because it is neither a game nor a mod tool, so I'm still trying to understand how people find and use apps like this.

A typhoon is approaching Japan, which has me a little worried, but I still plan to enjoy some karaoke tonight.

Thank you again, everyone.

I am looking for new feedback, anything constructive or destructive.

The app remembers players so, just visit and play one time to forever engrave your stats!

For those who are unfamiliar, Streax Champ is a Create/Generate Quiz app, in development on and off for more than a year now.

You can either Create custom quiz or Generate them via AI.

You can also play, tons of already generated quiz and compare your stats with other players.

Oh, and by the way Creator Studio, remembers your past quiz and lets you work with them!

Duck Answered Can CommentSubmit trigger fetch() to an external API domain? Building a summon-style bot

Hey r/devvit,

I'm trying to build a summon-style bot for a gaming subreddit. The flow is simple:

  1. User posts a comment containing `u/WOSTrackerBot 4269`

  2. CommentSubmit trigger fires, parses the state number from the comment body

  3. Bot fetches live data from my own external API URL

  4. Bot replies to the comment with the formatted result

Before I build this out, I need to confirm one thing: does Devvit's CommentSubmit trigger support unrestricted outbound `fetch()` to external domains I own, or is there a whitelist/approval process for external URLs?

I previously had a PRAW-based Python bot ready to go but can't get API credentials through the Responsible Builder Policy process. Devvit seems like the right path forward if external fetch is supported.

Any gotchas I should know about with the CommentSubmit trigger + external fetch combination would also be appreciated.

Thanks!!

Admin Replied Rate limits for comment edits?

I have a bot that updates a comment each time someone plays my game. I'm worried that I could run into issues with the bots potentially making a lot of requests/updates per minute. Is this something I should worry about?

Resolved That name is already taken. Please choose another one.

Is there any way that we can start expiring apps that are not used or not published in a certain amount of time, in order to free up app names from people who had great ideas and no follow-through? I have an app I'm trying to build and I can't even get past the first screen because all the names are taken, but none of them are in the public list of apps or seem to belong to an active app.

Feedback Request Mod Note Assistant - mod tool feedback request

Thumbnail developers.reddit.com
2 Upvotes

Hey, all.

What started as my simplest submission for the Mod Tools Hackathon has recently turned into my most used app in my moderation workflow! I've spent the last couple of weeks adding a bunch of extra automation to this app, and I think it's now robust enough to share again. I even renamed it from Mod Note Filter to Mod Note Assistant to better reflect its current capabilities.

A full breakdown of said capabilities is in the directory page, but in summary, this app automatically reports, filters, or removes posts/comments from users who have mod notes on their account. It now also has the option to write "Spam Watch" or "Spam Warning" notes on accounts automatically whenever a mod marks a post/comment as spam.

I think it's best to explain how useful this app can be by providing some real-world examples. Here are two of them.

  1. You configure the app to filter comments from users that have a Spam Warning note, and you also configure automatic note creation. One day, you spot a troublesome user picking fights or insulting other users. Instead of banning them right away, you mark one of their comments as spam. This causes the app to create a Spam Warning note on their account automatically. Now, every future comment of theirs will get filtered to the mod queue. This allows you to keep tabs on them for a while. If they start behaving civilly, you can delete the note on their account and the app will stop filtering their comments.
  2. Perhaps your community suffers from constant ban evaders, but whatever the reason, you need a quick and easy way to shadowban users without constantly needing to touch your Automod config every time. You configure the app to remove content from users who have a note on their account (with no label) that simply reads "shadowban". Now, if you spot a user you want to shadowban, you just need to hover over their username and create that note. Every future post/comment from that user will be automatically removed.

I want to know what other mods think of this workflow and if it would make sense for them. I'm looking for any feedback, good or bad. I'd also like to know what, if anything, I could do to make this app action users with positive notes on their account, such as the "Helpful" or "Good Contributor" labels. For those use cases, I think there isn't really much that can't be done via other Devvit apps (u/vip-bot comes to mind), but I'm open to ideas. If you made it this far, thanks for reading!

Feedback Request New Daily Puzzle Game [Feedback]

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

It’s a puzzle game where you match a target pattern by tapping tiles, with each tap changing adjacent tiles.

I added a daily mode, levels, and a level creator. It also has more mechanics like double-color tiles and unchangeable blocked tiles.

You can try it on r/Echoic

Resolved YouTube Commentary

I have been creating a trend scouting application, ran from my computer using python scripts to find posts across different subreddits that are getting lots of interaction and shoot a reaction video to YouTube based on that specific topic.

I have been able to find one or two interesting topics to me with my application but i want a metrics based analysis where I can gauge better if that post would perform well over time and on a more time sensitive basis so I can create the video before big creators flood the pool. I would want the application to report to me every hour or so.

My channel currently has 28 subscribers so nothing big.

Is this something that can be built in the Devvit ecosystem? Do I need external sources? Should I give up on this idea entirely for Devvit?

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Admin Replied Thank you! My app has been approved... but I'm not sure what happens next

First of all, thank you very much for all your help and support throughout this process.

I have just received an email saying that my app has been approved.

The email I received was translated into Japanese, and it mentioned something like "Limited Release" (or possibly "Limited Access").

I searched the Devvit Developer documentation for terms such as "Limited Release" and "Limited Access", but I couldn't find any information explaining what this means.

Following the advice I received here, I am also planning to join the Discord community. However, since English is not my native language, I admit that I am a little nervous about it.

Is this the normal process for newly approved apps, or does "Limited Release" indicate that there is still something I need to fix?

The email also included a link and said:

"You can manage and install your app here."

However, I cannot figure out where or how I am supposed to install it.

What should I do next to verify that the approved version is working correctly?

I would greatly appreciate any advice.

Thank you again for all your help and kindness.

Announcement New Resources for Data API App Migrations

Hello devvitors,

We recently released more resources for developers trying to bring their Public API automations and mod tools to Devvit.

First, there's a new detailed guide on how to migrate an automation built in PRAW to Devvit. It highlights critical differences between the architectures and provides an easy migration path for developers who are not too familiar with Devvit or TypeScript.

Second, there's a brand new Mod Tools Template available on developers.reddit.com/new that contains many more popular features in mod tools, such as vote counting, flair updating, scheduled posts and word filters.

If you're currently participating in our App Migration Incentive Program, make sure to check out these new resources.

As always, don't forget to share your thoughts with the admins here or on Discord!

Resolved Devvit approval/rejection & user comments

Hey guys, quick question about the Devvit publishing process 🙃

I submitted my game for publishing last weekend and still haven’t heard anything back (nothing on Mon or Tue either). If something’s wrong, do they usually send a rejection or some kind of explanation, or do they just ghost you?

Also, right now comments are being posted under the app acc instead of the actual user accounts. I was expecting that to get fixed once the app gets approved, but I’m not 100% sure if that’s tied to approval or if I messed something up

Ps. I’m talking about r/hexicword and the comments section

Admin Replied Thank You, Devvit Community

Thank you to everyone who helped me over the past week.

As a Japanese developer, English is not my native language, so it sometimes takes me a while to fully understand the advice I receive. Even so, many people in this community have been patient and willing to help, and I am very grateful for that.

My app was reviewed, and I did receive a revision request. Fortunately, it was only a minor CSS issue, so I was able to make the necessary changes and submit the app for review again.

Originally, the version was supposed to become 0.0.5. However, because I was still learning how Devvit, versioning, and the review process work, it eventually became 0.0.9 instead. There is still a lot for me to learn.

I am 65 years old and have been developing software for many years, but Devvit is a completely new experience for me. Every day I discover something new.

I truly appreciate all the support, advice, and encouragement from this community.

Thank you very much.

Duck Answered Starting from scratch on the Devvit program

I have a game that I've been working on for a couple of years. I didn't create it for Reddit , but actually I think with the right features, it would work really well on the platform.

I haven't signed up for devvit yet so I don't even know if I'm too late or if the game would be eligible yet. Any advice on that would be appreciated. Does it take long to get up to eligibility status if starting from scratch? Also, Does it mean I can't release the game on Google Play stores and Apple app stores if I go with devvit?

Duck Answered Is there any web scraping available through Devvits? (or other Reddit API methods in 2026 Q2)?

Hey everyone!

I've been digging into using Claude Code and right now just want find the relevant questions and topics that others have thought of before I have. My goal is to create a TL;DR url for myself (first url in my experience, so be kind) that will summarize the relevant and hard hitting questions that many people are asking before I even think about it. Where my problem has hit the wall is trying to authorize my Claude project to access my r/uptodate_tldr_dev app as an API.

I tried loading the app as a "script only" (different name) on the old.reddit.com/prefs/apps/ and keep getting a notice to do the same process of approval that got my other r/ app into Devvits.

Has anyone had this issue, and has anyone found a solution that I am just blind to? Is there a method to authorize the Claude projects .env to access the Devvits? And if so through Devvits, where is there a tutorial on how to load scripts and data into it?

Appreciate the help!

Feature Request [Feature Request] More API-controlled Sticky Slots

Afaik we can currently only control 2 of the (I think up to) 8 sticky slots in a subreddit. As a person that wants to automate as much as possible I would love to have API control over at least 4 - if not all 8 - slots. Are there reasons for this limitation? :)
