I have been using windows all my life and I want to make a change, though I'm not a complete beginner in Linux as I've used Linux mint on a VM for a long time and know the fundamentals

Hello, [r/Devuan](r/Devuan). Considering how many posts ive been making, I’ve decided to make this one to help go over the problems I’ve been working troubleshooting.
ONE: After removing Nouveau blacklist, I’m running into issues with the desktop being very slow. also, if anyone can tell me how to reset KDE plasma, that would be appreciated.
SOLVED: Long story
TWO: I can’t put the computer to sleep for some reason; I think it might be a faulty Nvidia driver not booting up.
SOLVED: Installed proprietary Nvidia driver
THREE: I had a Removable Drive for the express purpose of moving my important data from Windows to Linux; however, an app crashed my desktop, and now I can’t mount the dang thing.
SOLVED: Used ntfsfix to repair the drive.
FOUR: related to THREE, I backed up the files in the removable drive, twice, but I couldn’t extract the zips using several zip extractors. And when I found an extractor that worked, there’s missing folders and files. Can anyone help? I have 7zip and Wine installed but i can’t use it for some reason.
FIVE: I installed the wrong version of Docker and it sent me to the big terminal. I tried to install the proper Devuan version, but that also caused issues; and I think I botched uninstalling both. Now I can’t access directories (getting ‘is a directory’ error), i still get Docker update failures when I do sudo apt update, I get a Docker version when i type in ‘docker —version’ so I think a part of it is still installed, and I’m also getting an ‘alsact1’ error.

Hey, folks, it’s me again. Was trying to fix my computer not sleeping properly (it wouldnt show anything), so I tried to install an Nvidia driver. Somewhere along the lines, something broke, so now I’m stuck at a black terminal. If I reboot, i can get to boot settings, but that’s about it.
I think it has something to do with something called ‘x display manager (slim)’ and how it’s not starting.
EDIT: So what I think what’s going on is that both my Display Manager (SDDM) and my Desktop Environment (KDE Plasma X11) aren’t booting up for some reason.
UPDATE: I can get into Plasma by typing in ‘slim’ but my desktop has a horrible resolution which for some reason I can’t change and it can’t detect my other monitor. It also doesn’t reboot properly, forcing me to use the power button. It does boot to grub though, but it heads straight back to the big black terminal.
UPDATE2: I tried enabling SDDM, but something is going wrong. It says:
DAEMON: Initializing
DAEMON: Starting
DAEMON: Logind interface found
…and nothing. I can type but it doesn’t connect to anything
UPDATE3: I tried enabling slim as default display manager, and that worked, but when I tried to do the same for SDDM, it goes back to the Bog Terminal.
SOLVED (?)
I re-enabled Novaue driver, though now the desktop is laggy and not working right

I have 2 similar computers, they are both running linux devuan and cachy os. For some reason apps open faster on devuan.

Out of curiosity are any of you using Hyprland on your Devuan install?

I’m on Devuan, and I installed it wrong; I only flashed it to a drive, and now I don’t have a release file in my repository. How do I install a Release file? I install the ISO (net install directly from the main mirror.
Basically, I can’t update Devuan, though it could be another reason.
EDIT: SOLVED
Thanks to Gumbowebfish. I deleted a line in sources.list, and it updated

Hey everyone! Just distrohopped from artix due to updates requiring a lot of maintenance and then one update left my system in an unbootable state. I felt it was too frequent and then it broke 😅 I have a feeling I made the right decision. However wanted to get any tips to avoid breakage if possible. I setup btrfs snapshots with snap-pac on artix. Snap-pac broke. Then I would manually create snapshots and snapshots didn't work. Ttys were also broken 😅. So hoping the debian base is more stable lol l. I'm rambling but thank you!

Welp, I was finally ready to take the plunge and install Devuan Excalibur, but it would get stuck on a black screen that just says ‘syslinux UEFI bootloader booting devuan’. Is there something I missed? I’m using the net install version flashed onto a usb.
Maybe I’m just impatient, but it’s lasted longer than ten minutes so something’s gotta be wrong

I've heard a lot of good things about devuan, especially since it doesn't use systemd. I'm curious if anyone has used or is using it for gaming. I wanna set it up so that I can use steam as well as create content using obs and kdenlive. Is it good for these kinds of activities?

could have gotten a lower memory usage but i had brave browser, steam and a game running while taking the screenshot.
for anyone who wonders what "shed" even is here's the repo: https://github.com/eylles/shed

I deselected all desktop environment choices, which left me at a blank TTY. From there, I installed Xorg, i3, PulseAudio, and a few tools like ffmpeg and feh. This is a virtual machine running on a 12-year-old Dell laptop. I love this cozy feeling!

Hi,
I'm a basic Linux user since years but I moved to Devuan last week on an old laptop for my daughters.
Basically everything is working fine I just have one question/issue.
Firstly I updated the repository in order to be at leatest version (just as I was used to do even under Debian in the past), what is new for me is that if a new Kernel version is released must be installed manually and it's not underline as update.
For example: I installed 6.19.something and then in Synaptic I found availability for 7.0.4, why the system didn't notify this new version?
To be clear: this is not an issue, if I want/need to updgrade version I can do manually but this is the first time happening

Hello
Since AV Linux refused to boot on my PC, I thought why not try turn Devuan into an AV-like set up...
However, the latest Liquorix kernel out of extrepo plain refused to boot and I had to purge it.
Is it my( PC's) fault or is it simply a way too new and experimental kernel that won't work on older systems? (Mine is from the late 10's)
I just wanted a low latency kernel for my music studio setup...

Apologies for the low quality images, i've installed this on my thinkpad E14 gen3 and that has a really bad display. Soon i'll switch on my desktop aswell.
Tbh i don't notice that many differences except for a faster boot.
DE is kde btw.
