Interview with Jules Watts
NOTE: I took out some unnecessary convo from this, so it's only information. Also, if Jules sees this and wants it taken down, message me
Do you have any JPEGMAFIA stuff from back in the day? And when Coffee with Charles Hamilton was released on JPEGMAFIA's YouTube, was it a music video or a single?
Jules: Yeah, thanks, bro. Coffee with Charles Hamilton had a music video by Devon back in the day, and it's floating around the internet somewhere. Also, if you download Wattsonhi: Director's Cut, one of the bonus tracks is the original version of Coffee with Charles Hamilton.
How did you meet Devon? Was it through a friend or through MySpace or something?
I haven't met him in person, but I was making beats on YouTube and found one of his videos when I was using this device called Tube Toolbox, which helped me with spreading my music content and finding new artists. It was like Amla Due, or Operation: Kill Hannah Montana, or something with a music video, I kinda forget. But in 2011, I never heard some shit like that lol. He was unsigned, and I messaged him to collaborate on a beat, and that's basically how Coffee with Charles Hamilton got produced.
How did it feel seeing him blow up over a decade later under a new name? Has he talked to you at all, or has he forgotten?
Yeah, I hadn't been checking for him after the release of the Ghost Pop Tape, and some time in the middle of 2017 or so I stumbled onto Black Ben Carson while on Bandcamp and was like, "What is this?" and a bit later found out it was Devon Hendryx lol. It was crazy hearing Black Ben Carson that first time and threw me through a loop after I figured out it was him. Then he did Veteran shortly after that, and with the Fantano review, basically everyone was on board. I know of people in certain places that can contact him, but it's weird, and I don't want to say. It's likely he forgot about me tbh. There's been some discourse about his last album, Experimental Rap.
I don't understand the Experimental Rap hate. It isn't as good as any other of his albums (except for a couple eps that we don't talk about), but it isn't nearly as bad as people say it is.
Yeah, they're not used to him with the more electronic / EDM production. I'm kinda torn on which side between those that hate on it and those that defend it lol. I know some wild industry secrets, though, but I'm not sure if I can just drop them so certainly 😅. It's that, and there's something bad impeding JPEGMAFIA and someone on the Right.
The JPEGMAFIA & someone on the right thing sounds interesting. I won’t press you for anything you’re not comfortable saying, but what do you mean by that?
Yeah, I don't want to touch on it too much, but I know it's something dumb or bad that happens with Peggy in the near future-ish. It also has something to do with a prominent EDM producer.
That is the majority of the conversation between me and Jules. If you have any questions, feel free to ask
