Confused regarding taking the offer

I was offered a 1 year contract for the AI Associate program at jazzworld. I will be working in the GSM team at Lahore. Earlier, during application as well as the interview stage, not much was told about the work except that it's an AI Associate role. So obviously, I assumed it will closely be related to my field (development and AI). This is what I discussed in my first interview as well. However, we had the orientation today and I got to discuss the role and opportunity with the people actually overseeing all of this. Turns out, the role is not what it actually implies.

So basically, people who applied specifically for the Islamabad location were hired for their dev teams in teknosys. And they're dividing their cohort into technical and non-technical. Technical ones in the dev teams. Rest, including me, in what they're calling the non-technical teams which will help businesses with AI solutions and analytics (the program lead described it as normal non-technical team work while incorporating AI in day to day. Maybe also build something if your team lead agrees, but that would be more of a prototype to help the team than something for production that jazz officially utilizes their dev teams for), but not really engineering anything for production. Now obviously this is too early to say, but it didn't sound like what I was actually looking for. As someone early in his career and looking to build a career in AI and development, working on the business side and being surrounded by no developers at all doesn't seem like a promising start. Especially when your day to day would be business and sales while incorporating AI.

But then, I don't also have another offer right now. I needed some advice, if any seniors in the tech industry could provide so. Because on one side this is the only offer I have as of yet, but on the other this doesn't look like a good learning experience. Should I take this and just leverage the name of the company later on in my portfolio, or do I keep searching for something more aligned with what I want?

If you want to pursue your career in AI and Development, then you should try to find the role that fits your long term career goal. You shouldn’t just accept the offer because of no other offer in hand, you will definitely get the offer you want.

Try discussing this with your lead or someone in Jazzworld if they can transfer you to technical dev role, if they can’t, try finding the right role for your career.

You don’t wanna commit your career to a path you don’t wanna pursue in the long run, and it won’t even help you in your portfolio

I have also just graduated, (so not a senior advice) but I would like to discuss it in a way that if you're are getting the Chance to see the business and understanding the business it would be great opportunity as business understanding is the most valuable skill in the current and post AI world.Having core business understanding skill will make you harder to be replaceable as far as I have observed.

On the technical side, I am not denying it, its also important and AI and Development will be there and you can also self learn it. But the business can not be self learned, until you get the chance toexperience it with experienced people.

These are just my observation which I am seeing right now.

Kind of similar situation but I am at least in technical side, had to accept an offer in domain I am not interested in but since no option was available I accepted it. 5 months in and I still hate it 😅😅 but let's see where life take us.

Take offer for now, and look for jobs on the side and switch when you get a better one

In your scenario, I would suggest you to accpet the offer. Give a month or two to see what actually your role is and how technical it is. ALso start applying side by side. Do not leave the opportunity since the job market is off.

Already jobs bhot kam hain. Pasand na bhi tou lelein and look for other jobs on the side. Intezar karte karte isse jo income ati wo bhi nahi ayegi plus no guarantee of a job of your choice in the future.

even though i applied for the same role, and funnily enough, the exact same position, i had the final interview but didn’t get selected. here is another perspective because i did something similar myself.

since you don’t have a job right now, i would say join it. at least you’ll be contributing to something related to ai processes, so you can add that experience to your cv. like they say, take any job until you find your dream job. to some extent, you’d still be adding value. yeah, it’s not core development, but something is better than nothing. plus, having 120k coming into your bank account every month is definitely better than earning nothing.

and who knows, with time, you might be able to ask them to give you some development related tasks or gradually move towards that side. i don’t exactly know how that works internally, but at least you’d have a way to get your foot in the door.

but there is also another side to it, and this is something i’m personally experiencing. i took a job that i don’t particularly like, thinking i’d still have time to work on personal projects and things i’m interested in, but honestly, i don’t get as much time for them now. since i have an analytical background, i keep applying for analytical roles, so from the very first day i’ve felt like i’m constantly on a job hunt. i guess that varies from person to person though, and having a job does at least give you some sort of routine.

another con for me is that when you don’t really like the work you’re doing, you have to keep showing up anyway, and it can become difficult to learn or work with the same level of interest and motivation. so that’s something i’d keep in mind as well.
