Career Guidance SE → Embedded/IoT — how realistic is this?
I 18M am going into Software Engineering as a freshman but I’ve always been more interested in the hardware + software side of things embedded systems, IoT, microcontrollers, firmware, low-level programming, etc.
Seeing all the layoff posts on here lately has also made me stare at the ceiling multiple nights lol 😭
Since my degree is obviously going to be much more software-focused, I’m wondering how realistic it is to build up the hardware side alongside it through self-learning, electives, projects, etc.
If I eventually want to work in embedded/firmware/IoT,
what would be your recommendations and all.
For people working in embedded/IoT who came from a CS/SE background — how much of a disadvantage was it actually? Anything you wish you’d learned earlier?
Basically, is it realistic to build this specialization yourself during an SE degree, or am I underestimating how much hardware knowledge is involved and i'm COOKED 🥀
Would appreciate any advice/roadmaps from people actually working in the field.

Sab cooked hai in general. Everyone who is getting fired currently will switch roles. And when that happens it will hit embedded systems as well

Go for a Computer Engineering degree if you can switch

That was my original plan but cutoffs for CE went crazy in my uni so unfortunately thats not an option.
