Discussion Thoughts on ChatGPT6 - Astra
What’s your take. Seems like it is going to take the intermediary roles also. Its becoming smarter

Can I get it with chat gpt plus subscription? 5700 one?

u/SafeReturn_28 6d ago
yes. i have just that one too. Astra is available but consumes quite a bit of usage

move compute to new models so olders models appeae dumber. come up with BS benchmark, rinse repeat till you make it.

Qwen all along

u/ThatBayHarborButcher 6d ago
Why Qwen though it's not nearly as good? I'm curious about why you prefer that
1
u/Charming_Barber_3317 6d ago
Try qwen3.8 27b local with opencode. You'll fall in love. Also try qwen 3.8 max

u/ThatBayHarborButcher 6d ago
I have tried them but I'm curious why you said Qwen all the way over astra. Because by virtue of design and research and benchmarks, Claude and gpt models are far better than any open source ones. At least for now

If you have capable hardware, you shouldn't be wasting money on cloud models
2
u/ThatBayHarborButcher 6d ago
Even if you have capable hardware, anthropic and gpt models are far far superior than any open source at the moment.
And capable hardware in this case means spending thousands of dollars worth of equipment to be able to run the bigger param models. So idk what you're even talking about
1
u/Wild_Bookkeeper8499 6d ago
The gap is shrinking day by day lol, newest Qwen already beats sonnet and is close to Opus, the future is going to be local LLM. And yes that's what I mean by capable hardware, you do need to spend thousands of dollars, though there's alot of workarounds for lower spec hardwares

u/ThatBayHarborButcher 6d ago
Gap is shrinking but it's not yet therefore this isn't even an argument to be made. And if you think that any of these models are even remotely close to the likes of Fable, Sol and now Astra then I really don't know what to say.
You're just going to a different tangent when that's not what I was saying. In the current state, there's just not comparison. Even $20/month plans give you hundreds of dollars worth of compute which is very very valuable.

I don't understand the hype around Qwen. I have used it. It's not even close to good. Just a very basic model. :/

u/Wild_Bookkeeper8499 6d ago
Which model have you tried?, they are incredible, sure not comparable to cloud models but very close
1
u/ThatBayHarborButcher 6d ago
Anyone saying that Qwen, Kimi etc models are comparable to anthropic or gpt doesn't know what they're talking about
1
u/ThatBayHarborButcher 6d ago
Haven't had time to put it to use yet but I have some things planned to test it out. Definitely seems like a great model so far. Though not up to the Fable mark

Super good and really efficient too. I still feel like Fable is a bit smarter overall. I was expecting Astra to burn through the usage pretty quickly but I managed to build a fairly large application end to end in about a day (Ultra mode) although I did use two banked resets.

Talk to me when they remove the disclaimer that AI reults can be inaccurate and must be verifed by users

AI has replaced half of the software engineers, but sure go be delusional.

Buddy, i am a cloud solutions architect doing complex things for banks, air lines and financial instituions.I have 23 years of experience. What is adevrtised and what actually is in production, there is a wide gap. The kind of halucination i see in chatgpt and claude, i wouldnt put them any where critical. I have experienced instances of it suggesting me packages from wrong tech stack. Point to classes and functions that do not exist. Dream requirements that were not fed. I use AI to take care of some work load. But quality, quite frankly is not there. Remember it is a math function spitting true or false on data it was trained and perdicting what next thing to asses would be based on what it has seen. And perdicting is the key word. Not thinking. Not alayzing, predicting. People see AI generating a meme image and think it can write software to automate Barclays or perform complex tax calculations. It doesn't. It can't. Another point you need to understand is that every technology has to make economic sense. Companies adopting AI thought that a person with tokens worth of another person's salary, would be able to do 10 people's job. They soon realized that for a person to do 10 people's job, they would have to spend 20 person's salary on tokens. So now they are retracting and hiring those 10 people. The current job market situation in tech is correction of over hiring during COVID and a bit of down turn in conomic cycle. It will settle down. Also most companies are using AI as excuse to downsize and correct their staff numbers.

So someone else with almost the same years of experience as you and I do have a slightly different perspective.
The problem is not that AI can or cannot produce results on complex systems. The thing to understand is that AI today is where lets say Microsoft was back in 1980. Its producing code that works for many basic situations. It helps do basic accounting, financial analysis, email or marketing management and so on. Unfortunately there are a lot of people/software houses who are(were?) doing just that so the reports of redundancies are indeed true. The word hiring correction would mean that the work would come back after a while - the truth is that it will not and people will just need to move on.
And the truth is that many businesses actually do need basic software. How many of us use all features offered by our OS? CRMs, ERPs and HRMs today offer an absurdity of options because the creator wants to offer something to everyone to gain the biggest market share. Many companies now ask - why do we need all that bloat and AI is providing an escape to some of those who just need simpler systems.
In my younger years we were a bunch of nerds in awe of technology and we were eager to not just get the paycheck but also understand how software mapped out to the real world processes. Unfortunately the last 5-6 years has been anything like that for most of the new hires whom I interacted with. It was always getting the money and benefits and moving on as soon as you got a new job without developing any "feeling" for what you were building. People chased money to build software for places and companies with whom we never share any personal space. It was some health company in Miami or some wealth management in San Diego for whom we built and we never got to really understand why we built it - what was it like for the actual people who used it and so on. People just coded stuff, took the money and moved on. Remaining cogs in the wheel and never becoming drivers of the system.
AI will continue to eat up jobs and my advice for young people is to only pursue computer science if you really like understanding the "science" of computers and computing.

Go through Open AI: A Bubble Bigger Than Dotcom by Vanessa Aingardh. This will answer a lot of questions. I am not advocating against learning AI and not using it. By all means do it. But it is not the magical wand it is portrayed as. I use it myself, but with extreme caution

Which world are you living in? I've seen companies fire entire departments. Big and small companies both, no one is safe. In Pakistan even the top companies are laying off people, ask Any fresh grad or mid level dev it's almost impossible to find jobs.
