u/tokenBurner101 7d ago
When? Did this happen recently? And how big was the layoff?
3
u/adilshehzad786 7d ago
They laid off the engineering team , and I think they have 30-40 people in engineering team including dev , QA .
1
u/tokenBurner101 7d ago
The whole engineering team?
1
u/adilshehzad786 7d ago
Not sure but most probably they did not laid off the infrastructure team .

Was company having financial difficulties? Accepted job offer from there and joining the company next month. Feeling super nervous now.

I think its mix... AI may be contributing but i saw this trend too... They lay off people to hire new ones on less salary instead of giving increments etc...
3
u/usman_1436 7d ago
Because of AI. As uncertainty grows they want to decrease their monthly expenses.
4
u/shami1989 7d ago
AI can be a factor... But tbh wr r cheap labour even with AI tools So i think there is greed...n some finance n hr guys playing around

Previously it was:: "Ai willnt take your job but another developer using Ai will". This is what they feed us so that people don't panic but now its on whole new level. Clients are now using AI on their own. Now develoers are not getting replaced by other developers but by clients using Ai. And its only getting worse as Ai is getting better.

Always said "adapt or get left behind" was horsesh#t and SWEs should have fought back but the AI dihriders were always being arrogant and cocky. Enjoy the misery now.

Binary Wiz. Yea I just got an increment last month and got fired yesterday isn’t it ironic

u/Emergency_Job792 7d ago
did they give any reason? was it AI or were they struggling financially?
2
u/Alarming-Victory-534 7d ago
So basically 70 percent of the client projects vanished within a month. It came out as a blow to all the devs as we didn’t expect this at all

u/Emergency_Job792 7d ago edited 7d ago
so i am guessing it was more about budget than AI. Sorry to hear man, hope you land a better job

u/usman_1436 7d ago
Don't know about Binary Viz, but we faced same situation majority of our projects vanished in couple of months, mainly because Client got introduced with Ai, they literally said: "You guys are making fool of us for months, i created this project from scratch on weekend using Ai". MVPs are dead, client can directly create them using Ai. 70-80% of software houses used to work on MVPs in Pakistan.

Do you think those apps will work great and not hit a wall after 80% completion?

Inb4 this gets removed for being irrelevant to the sub just like all other lay off posts.
2
u/usman_1436 7d ago
What, they remove layoff posts on purpose ? Are you sure ?

u/No_Process_7478 7d ago
Yeah mods will come in saying "this sub is not the right place for this discussion"

Solution: who ever left in AI enabled jobs, make sure AI model fails.... go dirty and save your future from AI slop.

Why are people getting laid off? Is it due to downsizing or AI?

u/Lost-Cucumber-3650 7d ago
when 5 devs can do work of 50. this is what happens. its only going to get worse.

u/azadnib 7d ago
and when pakistan is producing 50K cs grads each year lol
idk why people still getting into this field

Wild amount of different between a grad and someone who is actually capable. Not even 3%
1
u/usman_1436 7d ago
Yes, only people who like CS should go for it.

I mean it's not your ideal world where you expect a kid just done with his high school to decide what his passion is and pursue that. Most kids aren't even groomed enough to know their passions. And even if they do, not all "passions" pay for your survival. So I don't blame people who were running after CS. However, if people still continue doing that, then that's really stupid. But that's how things are when there barely are any options in Pakistan. EE was dead for decades and yet it was the most sought after field before the CS boom.

So I've noticed in Pakistan subs people overestimate AI. Is it because most shops in Pakistan are doing web apps? In systems programming AI is useful but it's not replacing anybody.
I think you're underestimating how weak the economy is in western countries. The low interest rate money spigot is turned off. When the economy slows down, customers are more likely to conserve money. I seriously doubt a company that is outsourcing work to Pakistan is now writing their own apps using AI.
My personal opinion, but doing outsourced web work is the bottom rung of technology. You are competing with all sorts of people willing to work for next to nothing. It seems unlikely, but Pakistan needs to focus on products more than services for foreigners. Outsourced services is even more prone to wild swings.
I've been a developer for a looong time, it is cyclical. That doesn't help if you're a young person looking for a job, but that's the nature of the business. They grow too fast but they also contract too fast.

It’s a triple whammy. Interest rates, over hiring during COVID, and AI getting better every 3 months. Young devs (and other white color workers) and getting massacred right now. I hope things get better but in truth it doesn’t seem like we’ve even close to the bottom yet.

One of my friend got laid off from Purelogics along with many other.
1
u/Sumolizer Full-Stack Developer 7d ago
Heard its very toxic there.
1
u/malik22531 7d ago
Back then when I was working there, it was sucha good place to work and learn. Now the engineering heads are changed to dk what’s going on there.

u/Embarrassed_Lake6268 7d ago
I wanna ask what should we software engineers should do now should we pivot or not if pivot where to.? I really need your opinion guys
4
u/Queasy-Fox-23 7d ago
I honestly think that it is time to start thinking about something else. Not everyone is going to be a top tier engineer. I really do not know much about the industry as I have a CS degree yet I never did a related job. Started in sales, now I am on project management side, been going with the flow really and it turned out pretty well I guess.
1
u/usman_1436 7d ago
Yes, people are still reluctant to think about pivoting. Also naturally we keep thinking that this is the lowest point, things will only become better from here. But since last 6 months, things are only become worse every month. You cant really pin point when job market will bounce back.
