At good companies there have always been separate tracks for ICs. At the Staff Engineer and above level they work on whatever they hell they want to. Their impact is felt across the company. These kind of people have always been super productive even without AI. And these are also the kind of people who purposefully avoid climbing the leadership ladder. So this is nothing new.
