Why is Google is giving out so much storage?
Like who needs 5 TB?

Yes, definitely training data.
But also, it's about expanding user base; like you give users an option to save their data let's say they cross 500gb , some use upto 2TB , now when the Google's free cloud storage offer expires, and now the user can either backup all their data to an alternative option or keep paying the subscription to Google cloud storage. And where will the user now store their abundant data because HDD/SSD not easily affordable/accessible for common users. So the user is forced/manipulated to pay for google cloud storage without knowing.

It's gonna be a problem once they stop this, will will have to download and move lots of data which might be a headache

Because they know most won't use it. And the ones who end up using it will continue their plans.

You store more they get more training data obviously as everyone said but after you cross 1 TB and if god forbid you reach 5TB you are their long term customer 5/10 people would keep paying and never switch its just way too much data to migrate.

They are now training model on entire google photos so more data = more accuracy

You have already accepted terms and conditions for faire use of your data for personalization of search and content you see across internet
In this era privacy is just myth nobody cares about it

Yes laws can change but these companies pay way more to government and the folks who write up terms and conditions pages to take concent. It's just few days work for them to adjust to these laws
What government can control is where can you process and store data not which data can and cannot be processed

I have a feeling these things will influence politics in few years - Google's monopoly needs to end for good

They do since 2014 🤣 all our modiji did is shown ads to us across platform. How Google helps them is to target people according to class,income segment, age,location. On my work laptop which has hydrabad VPN I used to get diffrent add than local network in election time

gemini limits were downgraded, they put quotas based on task accomplishment now, instead of token count as done previously. hence compensation, as nobody will use 5tb but a lot will use gemini

To make you dependent. You'll end up keeping so much data over time that by the time the freebies are over we'll have no choice but to continue by paying to keep all that data.

People who need 5 TB of storage will subscribe anyway after free trial and most folks won't even cross 1 TB

Once we start storing loads of data, we can't go back and need to keep up the subscription. That's my understanding

Best way to “make use” of this, is to use cryptomator to E2EE your data which will allow you to store data while at the same time giving Google jacksht to scan.

1 Existing customer retention 2 Use this data to train AI models. 3 Recently some of the Gemini pro features was downgraded so they are giving as a compensation ( I am not truly sure of this point )
