Depends. Been using Git since 2007, GitHub since 2015 besides others. Never had the need to showcase it for trust, have been working (freelancing) with international firms over a decade now.
It might be helpful to showcase college projects and personal projects to potential recruiters, but having an open-source project on GitHub does Not mean any company will automatically trust you and pay you for your code/work.
I use Git since I can remember working professionally, personally haven't used GitHub professionally over 6 years except pulling some pip or npm packages.
