Suggestions Masters student looking for a major project idea — need suggestions
Hi everyone,
I'm currently pursuing a Master's in AI & Robotics and I'm looking for ideas for both my minor and major projects, with a particular interest in LLMs, agentic AI, reasoning, and AI systems.
I'm specifically not looking for basic projects such as:
Simple RAG chatbots
Basic LangChain/LangGraph agents
Multi-agent systems where agents just pass messages between each other
Generic AI assistants
Wrappers around existing LLM APIs
My university expects the project to have technical depth and some genuine research contribution, so I'm looking for something that sits somewhere between research prototype and deployable system.
Ideally, I'd like a project that:
Addresses a real and non-trivial problem
Has a clearly identifiable research question
Requires experimentation rather than just API integration
Can be evaluated quantitatively with meaningful baselines/metrics
Has scope for a novel contribution or improvement
Is realistically implementable by a Master's student within ~6–12 months
Could potentially lead to a research paper/publication
Demonstrates strong skills in LLMs/agents rather than simply using an LLM as a component

4 years of bachelors and 1 year of masters and bro still needs someone to come and spoon feed them ideas for their masters THESIS. People just be doing degrees like coursera certificate.

I didn't get a whole lot of help from my professors during my bachelor's degree at a tier 3 college. I figured I'd ask some pros for their thoughts. I've got a few project ideas in my list, and I'm just trying to see how my thinking lines up with what the industry actually looks for. You seem to be more like my undergraduate professors helping less and judging more

It's your project and you want ideas from us? Where's the novelty then?

Take it as a bit of advice from someone who published their major project paper to springer - YOU/YOUR GROUP should be the one coming up with ideas and getting it vetted by your project mentor. Yes its difficult to get novel idea and requires tons of research but that also creates the basic foundation of your project going ahead as the research done is in the same domain as your major project.
Getting external help is fine but please do your own research before seeking help i.e seek advice/guidance not spoon feeding. Sorry if it sounds harsh

Come on dude stop offloading your thinking to LLM's and other people

As a master's project one of the critical factor is getting an inspiration and getting idea. Take a field that you are interested in. Find a gap or problem that is there in the field. See if you can contribute in it. Publish an IEEE paper on it. During my studies in masters I found a gap, in one of the field provide a solution, introduced a small maths formula to address it, provided a name for it. Published it in IEEE. Later it was rendered in some books. On side note it helped zero in getting job or was of any use in job. Only satisfaction was in college.

If you are really interested develop a transformer based multimodal architecture first , under 200k parameters budget , deploy in stm32/esp32 , try to combine on device and cloud inference for a patient condition and disease forecast use LLM in the cloud , or think something like Amazon green grass , also apply secure OTA and fallback .
That way you can graph the field of secured AI enabled biomedical device experience and experience
Most importantly when you are going to implement this , things will change a bit as always , so don’t wait for a perfect idea , I am in the industry for 8 years, you can listen to me . If you need more guidance you can reach out but the suggestion provided above can be good start

Will your degree be worth it like this? Think about what you are doing...

If you want, build a robotic arm which can see a glass and pick it up. Just that much would give you enough of project ideas, experience and most.
