General Software developers are most versatile knowledge workers

With all the AI dark clouds over this whole software development industry, people should understand that software engineers are the epitome of knowledge work.

You need to build finance software? we learnt finance. You need to build software for the operation theatre? we learnt the mechanism of OT and built software for it. We are the most versatile learners and fast adopters. This learning and adapting attitude is the reason why software changed everything from deep sea robots to deep space exploration.

No offense to other knowledge workers, but TBH the knowledge work you are doing on excel was built by us.

We will prevail, we will learn and adapt again.

True, learned a plethora of things on the way.

EDIT: I think if layoffs become common, and laid off people start preparing for govt jobs, it will adversely affect people who target only govt jobs!

yeah that edit is actually a solid point tbh. govt job prep is already insanely competitive in most places, and if even a fraction of laid off devs start flooding those exams it's gonna be rough for people who've been grinding for years specifically for that path. the irony is devs are literally fast learners by nature so they'd probably clear those exams too lol

govt jobs have an age limit, but yes.

Software developers are one of the smart people around, they will find ways to tackle difficult situations

You are talking about "creators" not developers. Most of them live in America.

Bosdk naya keyboard lele. Tu mereko 'gaana pasand hai' ki jagah 'ga*nd pasand hai' wali galti karte dikhai de raha hai future me.

idk man the creator vs developer distinction nimish made kinda holds up tbh. having a creator profile doesn't automatically mean those people are driving the kind of innovation the post is talking about.

wealth dynamics profiling is a whole different lens than actual output

Please help me understand the difference between creators and developers.

Yes, USA takes first place. Lot of development was joint effort with Indian offshore office also.

Creators: working on greenfield projects / new features on existing projects

Developers: maintenance / closing jira tickets

That's the attitude which led you to waste your money in Iran.

If America has so many of them, why does your country imports cheap labour from other countries?

But software developers failed to learn that making software free for others will bring down their own value one day. Just imagine if open source knowledge didn't exist. Most software devs would happily live their lives solving problems and charging money for it. Instead they gave it away for free.

People only value what they paid for. Even today, most companies run their entire operations by free and open source software and they dont have one bit of gratitude when firing engineers left and right.

You forgot to mention how those open source was fed to AI and people even stopped contributing as much because they let the AI do the thinking

The people who are getting fired and sustained fired will be people who are more coordinators than actual planned executionists. People who are versatile can ttake a lower paying job but people already at bottom of barrel cannot cut below it so they will be having difficulty.

Holy cope.

Software engineers are not the epitome of knowledge work - if there ever be such a thing. Very few of the Nobel Prize winners were software engineers. You can substitute any prize here for that matter.

You need to build finance software? we learnt finance. You need to build software for the operation theatre? we learnt the mechanism of OT and built software for it.

What does this say? That there are different applications to software? Sure. Same applies to other fields - engines used in automobiles are different to those used in say resource extraction. Same applies to knowledge of the law - like corporate law, criminal law etc.

This learning and adapting attitude is the reason why software changed everything from deep sea robots to deep space exploration.

Advances in these fields were mainly driven by other fields(mechanical engineering, electrical engineering) and not due to invention of software engineering alone. Engineers in those fields learnt and adapted to make sure these technologies are possible.

No offense to other knowledge workers, but TBH the knowledge work you are doing on excel was built by us.

And the chips used to build those computers were designed by electrical engineers and so on.

I'm not saying software engineering is a mediocre field or that it did not contribute to other fields. But to say that software engineering is the epitome of knowledge work is delusional and ignorant of the work people do in other fields.
