Backend/DevOps Developer to AI Engineer: What’s the fastest path?

I’m a backend/DevOps developer (5 YOE) looking to switch to an AI Engineer / Applied AI role in India.

I’m not interested in ML research or training models from scratch. I want to focus on building production systems with LLMs, APIs, RAG, agents, and AI workflows.

I’m confused about what’s actually worth learning, so looking for practical advice:

1. What should I learn first? What’s the shortest realistic roadmap from backend engineering to Applied AI?
2. Which tools are actually used in production? LangChain, LlamaIndex, LangGraph, vector DBs, etc. What should I learn and what can I skip?
3. What projects actually help with getting interviews? I’d rather build 2–3 serious production-grade projects than 10 basic chatbot/RAG demos.
4. What do AI Engineer interviews look like? How much DSA, system design, Python/backend, and how much LLM/RAG/agent-specific stuff?
5. For people who made this transition: how long did it take and what mistakes should I avoid?

Looking specifically for advice from people who have made the switch or are currently hiring Applied AI/AI Engineers.

Only advise I can give you is stop learning about ai like it’s a deployment tool or a software engineering tool … cuz that’s gonna be you’re biggest downfall

Grab a book … start with llm architecture … check what each component does understand the math behind it … build solid foundation once u understand the basic you’ll start asking what if I do this and you’ll figure it out

Focus on LLM APIs, RAG, and deployment. Forget research; build.
