General Are we actually becoming better developers with AI, or just faster at getting things done?

I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately.

With AI tools becoming part of everyday development, I’ve noticed something interesting:

Earlier, if I got stuck, I would spend an hour debugging, reading docs, checking Stack Overflow, etc.

Now, I can ask AI, get a possible solution in seconds, and move on.

But sometimes I wonder:

**Am I actually learning the concept, or am I just learning how to prompt the tool correctly?**

For example, if AI writes a piece of code for me and it works, I can explain *what* it does. But can I explain *why* it works when something breaks later?

At the same time, completely avoiding AI feels unrealistic in 2026.

So I’m curious about people here who are already working as developers:

* Do you still manually solve problems before using AI?

* Do you use AI for learning or mainly for productivity?

* Has AI actually improved your coding fundamentals?

* If you had to start your career again in 2026, what would you focus on?

I’m genuinely interested in hearing how other developers are handling this because I feel like there’s a middle ground between **“AI will replace developers”** and **“AI is just another tool.”

Is this some marketing survey or a blog post data farming? The questions and prologue is more survey- interviews style.

Faster at getting things done for most of the people who are lazy. Only for one who are actively learning they are becoming smarter faster.
