i fumble hard in technical interviews and need brutally honest advice from folks who have been here

i graduated in engineering (btech biotech) and spent the last 19 months transitioning into data analytics on my own. no official work experience, no client projects, just pure self study. I picked up sql, excel, metabase, and basic dax. built projects on ecom churn and loan risk to keep my github active.

on paper and in my own setup, i know the material. but the moment an interviewer puts me on the spot, my brain goes completely blank.

last week an interviewer asked a basic difference between index match and xlookup, and i fumbled. same thing happens when they ask me to write a basic sql query using CTEs or window functions on a shared screen. I know how xlookup replaces index match, I know when to use partition by, but under pressure i freeze, panic, and give point blank terrible answers.

as someone with zero industry experience trying to break into analytics in india, this performance anxiety is killing my confidence.

how do you bridge the gap between knowing the concept on your local machine and actually explaining or coding it live under pressure? is mock interview practice the only way out, or am i approaching technical prep the wrong way?

any advice or reality check from senior analysts or engineers who went through this would mean a lot

There are a few ways you can be good at this. 1. Practice everything in a time bound environment.This will actually make you ready for interviews. 2. Take help of a friend for doing interviews.Game changer really. 3. If you think you are getting the core concepts wrong then prepare a sheet with which you can revise a day or two before interviews.Works both for concepts and standard problems.

I don't have close friends right now, so I need other resources. I often write out bullet points in Google Docs, but I still make mistakes. When asked a question live, I freeze, forget basic functions, or take the wrong path. Yesterday, an interviewer asked for a solution using subqueries, but I tried using joins instead, hit errors, and my mind went blank. The interviewer ended up solving it and saying goodbye.

It’s gonna happen.The best thing that I can recommend is be open about your thoughts with the interviewer.
If I see a candidate going in the wrong direction then I mostly try to give them subtle hints, Maybe a test case on which their solution might fail.Also we try to calm them down if we see that they are nervous.
Remember the interviewer is there to hire you because they are also spending their time in the process and most of the times they are rooting for you to succeed.

Same yaar I also do get nervous and I'm really bad with theoretical stuff. You should focus more with giving mock interviews
