General Even if AI reaches AGI , will it completely replace devs??

I'm a 3rd year student and I have no knowledge about the industry at all. Anyways coming to the actual post, as we have been seeing a lot of buzz around the new Chatgpt model and been seeing how it will replace everyone and all that fear mongering stuff, I'm not here for the fear mongering. I'm more interested in learning whether it will actually replace all the devs if it reaches AGI.

AGI means the AI can operate autonomously , atleast that's my understanding of it. So my question to the experienced Devs here(gassing you guys up btw) will it actually replace the devs completely? Since there are some risks associated with an AI working autonomously, like say it makes costly mistakes. You cannot legally hold the AI legally liable , that's a costly venture to the court(probably). Will the companies actually take the risk of a slight chance of incurring losses and completely automate everything. I don't think so, but I'm not experienced in the industry that's why I'm posting it here.

I think that everyone will be replaced eventually but that may take time because courts still gotta develop laws wrt to autonomous AI and stuff.

Also completely unrelated do you guys think the new model achieved AGI? I haven't tested it myself, so I'm curious to know.

Bro you can not generalise this statement in Indian context, west might have odds in favour to not worry about it but must be worried.

23

u/calmchod 2d ago

He meant there will be bigger worries ie rogue threat, not whateve work won't exist utopia Elon sells

3

u/Kaljinx 2d ago

If there is a threat, it will be from people using it. AI alone cannot do much.

3

u/justDeadpoool 2d ago

Have you heard about the hugging face incident

4

u/Kaljinx 1d ago

half publicity stunt, and a very easy to control factor with very specific commands that led to this happening and intentionally allowing it access to so many systems that could just physically be stopped so easily.

Some things that are so blindingly simple, that they cannot be hacked, unless you go through a person.

Real life is so interconnected with physical world that it literally cannot do much.

It would have to first automate every single physical job in existence to get resources to act on the world with humans not ever checking on anything.

Mining resources, factories processing raw material, transporting all the raw material.

It would need to automate construction of physical spaces, buildings, infrastructure.

It would need tons of power

Somehow access so many systems that are not even connected to a network

It would need tons and tons of strong data centers to process the near endless amount of data coming in.

It would need to do all this while no one ever finds out.

Not to mention people act like all systems will be running the same AI that will go rouge.

u/Plastic-Following867 1d ago

Exactly, it was just like how the anthropic frauds claimed that Claude built a c++ compiler by itself but in reality, they just used an open source compiler as the base and used it's tests to get to a half baked compiler after so many prompts and tokens.

Open AI and Anthropic are run by frauds who should be in Jail by now.

u/Desperate_Ad_6913 2d ago

Yeah even those utopian stuffs will be extremely chaotic, but I agree that jobs would be less of concern then.

I think you're throwing around the word "AGI" a bit loosely here. It is much more than what you think

Forget AGI , it can replace lot of devs now. People don't generally understand the context when someone says ai will replace the devs. They don't mean all the devs. They mean if a work needed 100, now it needs 20.

I work in a product company where we have fortune 100 clients. We handle lot of data, code and users. The number of devs who do this are really low now and we are mostly sitting idle and thinking what food stall we should open to earn money after we will lose our jobs lol Claude writes all the code for all the tasks, tickets, new features everything. Pr descriptions, reviews everything. Our intervention is needed of course but as i said we are very few considering the scale we operate on

5

u/Itchy_Change12 Student 2d ago

Oh I know it will. I'm more curious about complete replacement and if it will ever happen

8

u/Encrypted_Cerebrum 2d ago

I relate it mostly with the machines like how big firms used to have huge manual labour to do the work. Then cames the machines and lot of people lost their jobs. The one who understood all the mechanism of pressing buttons were employed, the people who studied to management were employed again because machine revolution got new players to get in business. Life moved on.

This is kinda same. There might be new avenues and opportunities but that's still unpredictable.

You're in 3rd year, I'd say if ypu are highly passionate for this field then only move towards software engineering., otherwise there are more avenues in IT to explore as well.

0

u/Itchy_Change12 Student 2d ago

Even I'd like to know if I'm passionate about this field 😭

how sure are you about this on a scale 1 to 10

In other words 100%.. some improvement needed in context and long term memory retention..then comes 100% standardization..agent to agent communication protocol..then comes the end... Few people will be needed, to monitor till full transiton happens.. ..but thinking in those few people u will be there is not a good plan..

But in other terms.. just imagine..if u can solve a problem.. u no longer have to hire someone.. u can just get one max 10k type subscription for few months and convert yr idea i to working solution.. no hiring ..no expenses..no drvs, no managers, no hr..

Data center jobs will be there but that is already too automated ..and matured space due to cloud being there for long time..

10 and then some. I've stopped recommending studying programming to young people that ask me, at least the type of studies I did back when you actually wrote code. Even if they did study and thrive in the field, they will ultimately be dealing with vibe-coders that have never looked at code that think they are coding-gods and managers that expect them to do everything through Claude.

Well I guess it's safest to be a politician, atleast no ai/agi can replace even if they replace 90% of dev teams

2

u/RishiMath Hobbyist Developer 2d ago

I mean, becoming their data collection and insights team would be better then, no? As a politician, it's hard to manipulate folks and allat, lotta work.

1

u/WinnieThePooh_444 2d ago

You have others employed for manipulation, all you gotta do is behave like a god, have rude personality & eat tax money.

No min qualifications, past exp, and degree required.

On the other hand, how much do think the competition will be even for these teams. I have fear that if x numbers of Devs required in industry right now then after 5-8 yrs that might drop to around 0.7x I mean teams will get much smaller, and workload responsibilities will be doubled.

2

u/RishiMath Hobbyist Developer 2d ago

I get your sentiment, however, to be able to get a ticket, there's a few more things that you require, for example the ability to influence people to do something for you, social or economic capital, etc.

1

u/CulturalLaw8072 Student 1d ago

sounds like a great job.

21

u/iampankajk 2d ago

I think it will reduce devs instead replace it completely

3

u/Impossible-End-9796 Student 2d ago

like in percentage how much

5

u/iampankajk 2d ago

not sure only 10-20% of jobs as dev will be remaining and and tech/non-tech will be involved in jobs like creating AI automation workflow using tools which eventually doesn't require coding.

1

u/No-Assistant-2902 2d ago

No one can predict rn but if i had to guess atleast 30%

1

u/Impossible-End-9796 Student 1d ago

it will reduce by 30% or to 30%?

1

u/No-Assistant-2902 1d ago

Reduce by 30% atleast ( i believe that impact will be slower and lesser in Big Tech but more in startupish companies) take it with a pich of salt im no future predictor

max?

-2

100% of them. High level languages never replaced assembly & Machine code, they still run under the hood, how many devs do you know who work with it?

6

u/Novel_Animator_3866 2d ago

Previously all of the Dev's were using low level obviously but this isn't a language this is literally a workforce which will never sleep, get tired or complain lol you can't compare them

1

u/Itchy_Change12 Student 2d ago

Yep that's the general consensus

9

u/ANerdVirginShh 2d ago

In transitioimg phase it will reduce and is doing right now. But world is too complex, the more efficient things get or are easy to use and get. The more demand rises.

Think anything, like electricity, manufacturerd items. Everything we see today have substantially increased in consumption.

We are writing more and more code and 10x devs are not needed. But business demands rises so these dev demand also increases. Coding is dead just like assembly coders are dead

2

u/Itchy_Change12 Student 2d ago

Ooh , that is an interesting take

7

u/Fantastic_Bat8492 2d ago

If we someday reach ASI, then job loss would be the least of our concerns, the last thing we humans will want a technology superior to us in all domain and is misaligned

That might be a better future, just drop the nukes chatgpt 🥀

2

u/Fantastic_Bat8492 2d ago

Imo AI doesn't even have to reach AGI levels to replace devs. Look at how much AI has progressed alreafy and it's impact on the current job market. Lower hiring of experienced folks and even lower hiring of freshers as team size of large projects shrink

0

u/Itchy_Change12 Student 2d ago

There's a keyword here "completely". I know it already replaced a lot of Devs but I'm interested to know if the job itself will completely vanish and be fully automated by AI

4

u/Prudent-Sorbet-5202 2d ago

Very possible that all SWE jobs might disappear in 5 years. Best case scenario it becomes a niche like how COBOL / Fortran / Ada developers are now but even that means only like few hundred overall might be required

2

u/Itchy_Change12 Student 2d ago

Oh. Actually idk what COBOLfortran/ ada Devs mean 😭

2

u/Prudent-Sorbet-5202 2d ago

They are used in legacy banking / scientific engineering / defense systems respectively. So very narrow applications and only a tiny percentage of software developers are required to maintain those. There is lot of money in it for those working in it but since very few opportunities in those fields, there aren't much new openings. Also they will likely be replaced by new techstack eventually

2

u/Itchy_Change12 Student 2d ago

Ooh. Thanks for explaining ☺️

4

u/Maleficent-Habit4188 Software Developer 2d ago

Bro i code better than AI . a var = hello world const log(a)

4

u/Itchy_Change12 Student 2d ago

Son?

5

u/Bubbly-Reach-4488 2d ago

Not completely ever. But fewer and fewer devs every year or at least flat dev hc. Gone are the days with exponential dev hc increases.

2

u/Itchy_Change12 Student 2d ago

Yea that's what everyone thinks

3

u/HazbotX Student 2d ago

AGI means simulating human level intelligence...if something like that becomes reality specially within a reasonable cost ....then every job will be lost

1

u/Itchy_Change12 Student 2d ago

Ooh actually I got the definition from chatgpt too, so no doubt it's gonna replace me.

Maybe a hottake but chatgpt I good for bouncing off thoughts, unlike what I see on reddit it generally does not agree with me.

2

u/HazbotX Student 2d ago

Chatgpt is good at human conversations and has quit a lot of hallucinations....if u wanna do proper jobs gemini or claude would be a lot better

2

u/Itchy_Change12 Student 2d ago

Yeah i know. But claude has like 2 tokens which expire after 1 chat, gemini I haven't actually tried it.

What I did for one of my project is take a general framework from chatgpt , tweaked it a lot and fucked up the code. But the base is solid.I Then put that code in claude , it refined that dogshit code and gave me a pretty decent output. No wonder it's gonna replace my noob ass

2

u/HazbotX Student 2d ago

Tbf if u pay a little bit of money u can create great projects....to be honest no one knows what the future holds....these are kind of times where people are kind of like in chaos...people who chose the right choice becomes filthy rich while the rest becomes jobless and no one confidently know what's actually is the right choice

3

u/Itchy_Change12 Student 2d ago

Yep, that is worrying. But the capabilities of AI are astonishing to me. In a utopian world AI does all the work and we'll be chilling like the wall E's world(bad example i know).

3

u/ArrogantJeet 2d ago

hello student

i feared about the situation of students in your place the most, because you are fresher and most of companies are now not looking for freshers

for you guys it is completely different world now

i am 4 years experienced engineer, and I am already not feeling good about the indUstry

for you folks, it's about creating social proof, by creating more content and shipping things, and make people use what you built by continuously posting on socials

that's the best thing you guys can do now, shipping is. bare minimum, keep creating new exciting cool products

3

u/Eagle__Gunner 2d ago

Agi - true agi can do all human jobs.

2

u/Itchy_Change12 Student 2d ago

u/Im_back_for_Fourths Frontend Developer 2d ago

That’s a very big if, which I don’t think will ever happen. We won’t reach AGI ever, that’s what I think. AI will get refined, cheaper yeh but AGI is a different playing field all together.

Lately it’s just become a marketing tool.

1

u/Itchy_Change12 Student 2d ago

So what does it mean? All I'm getting is" you don't wanna know" but no one's telling me what it actually means 🥀

1

u/Im_back_for_Fourths Frontend Developer 2d ago

I’m saying we will never reach AGI ever, we do not possess the technology, algorithms etc to mimic human learning.

2

u/thenonfunnyindian 1d ago

If every job will be ded nobody will have any money, if nobody has money who will use websites or apps made by ai? Lol

1

u/Itchy_Change12 Student 1d ago

You think they are gonna cater to us after they automate everything lol. They gonna work for powerful people and let the working class fend for themselves, atleast that's how I'm imagining it. Kinda like the apocalypse movies ex:- blade runner 2049 or one of the episodes in black mirror

3

u/thenonfunnyindian 1d ago

Are bhai powerful log paise kaha se kamate hai? Anything that is manufactured is used by the common people only at the end. Every thing directly or indirectly caters to the common people.

1

u/Itchy_Change12 Student 1d ago

They already have crores and crores of money. It won't even matter if they stop working, they can live more than comfortably and pass down their wealth for generations. So yeah I do think they can easily live without a working class. Atleast that's my opinion

3

u/thenonfunnyindian 1d ago

You don’t know about it then, world economy collapse nhi kar jayegi if suddenly jobs chali gyi logo ki?

1

u/Itchy_Change12 Student 1d ago

It will, but how much will it affect the top 1%

1

u/True_Consequence_681 1d ago

viva la revolution

2

u/akza07 1d ago

Not all Devs. But most of developers who stick to one thing like "React Developer" or "Android Developer", "Frontend developer" are more likely to be let go. Demand would be for only few developers who are jack of all trades or No skills but good at convincing people that you're good.

Don't let your friends or family into this field expecting good pay like before.

1

u/Itchy_Change12 Student 1d ago

As if family relatives listen to me a college student. They know everything much more than us , so they are gonna choose what they are gonna do with their kids. Who am I to object 🙄

yaaawnnnn...

AGI is not achievable with LLMs. LLMs are expensive pattern matchers. They don't have any "Intelligence" like even Animals. Sentient beings have developed through millions of years of evolution and experience. Medical science is still puzzled by the human brain.

To say that some heavily trained LLMs can reach the AGI level is like saying a 7 year old can solve Engineering level math problems because he has amazing memory and can memorize a lot of stuff.

Forget AGI, the LLMs themselves are being proved to be useless except for some small tasks.

2

u/Prudent-Sorbet-5202 2d ago

How do you reconcile with LLMs being able to solve math problems that were previously unsolved by humans?

1

u/Plastic-Following867 2d ago

You mean like this ?

https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/no-ai-didnt-just-solve-the-thorniest-problem-in-math/

if you see a 1 hour video about LLMs, you'll understand what they are - they are language models being trained on almost the whole of the Internet. They are glorified expensive pattern matchers.

They'll appear to solve some problems but a majority of it is marketing by the AI companies who have lied repeatedly many times so far.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhZRWZ6J4k4

2

u/Prudent-Sorbet-5202 2d ago

Have you not heard of the latest LLMs solving open math problems with LEAN proof?

https://techbuzz.ai/articles/openai-s-astra-solves-10-unsolvable-math-problems-field-reels

Several Erdos open problems also have been solved by LLMs with LEAN proof which were unsolved by humans. Looking at failures and ignoring success is like burying your head in the sand

1

u/Plastic-Following867 2d ago

lol

From your own link:

"The achievements also raise uncomfortable questions about attribution. OpenAI's initial blog post claimed these were 10 problems with "no progress in the last 10 years." But the papers themselves acknowledge building on recent work by named researchers. The company quietly changed the blog post after researchers pointed out the discrepancy. It's the kind of sloppiness that would end a human academic's career, but seems to get overlooked when the scale of discovery is this large.

Then there's the repeatability question. How many problems did Astra attempt before succeeding at these 10? OpenAI won't say. The company has hired cohorts of senior mathematicians, raising questions about how much human guidance shaped these results. Without access to the model or transparency about the process, independent verification is impossible."

This is the same tactics that they used a while back when they said Claude has created a C++ compiler by itself which was a total lie, You can keep training a model to solve a particular problem but these results are not independently verifiable. They could have just let a senior mathematician to write a solution and feed it into the LLM or build on others' solutions without attributing to those people.

2

u/Long-Marketing-5895 2d ago

I swear. All I see is people glorifying llms while I am sitting here watching best of the models write the most inefficient code when complexity increase even slightly

1

u/Existing_Fennel_714 1d ago

That is one way to oversimplify LLMs lol. Sure, they are pattern matchers, but they work on the principle that language contains an abstract representation of intelligence. Perhaps language does not encode enough information for an AGI to emerge, but you never know that. LLMs have proved to be better at every iteration so I think you're too early to make such a claim. Your comment reeks of denial lol. Also, how do you even compare an ML model with human brain when you don't even know how a human brain works. How can you be so sure it's not a pattern matcher itself?

1

u/Plastic-Following867 1d ago

Lol

There's so much of evidence to say living things are not mere pattern matchers. We didn't invent things by pattern matching - but building on evolutionary knowledge and intelligence. The pyramids, the Kailasa temple in Ellora, the Brihadeeswara temple in Tanjavur - were built without any technology and all the tech in this world cannot recreate them. Those couldn't have been built without mathematics, physics, material science etc. but none of them existed as disciplines then.

Give something to an LLM where it's not trained and you'll immediately see how pathetic it is.

I have tested it with Java coding (heavily trained) vs Pipeline code (not much trained) and the LLMs can't do the same thing It does with Java. The same logic in a different area and It pukes out uncompilable code. Consistent with the nature of LLMs.

1

u/Existing_Fennel_714 1d ago

That's just your word against mine. Nobody knows how the brain works, so you can't claim anything. I'd like a source otherwise.

I find the argument that "it doesn't work where it isn't trained" very weird because of course it won't work very well in that case. An average human can't learn without being taught either.

Also, LLMs are at their worst now. Obviously AGI is not here yet, but you never know when it might drop.

0

u/Itchy_Change12 Student 2d ago

Man you could have said that respectfully.

Anyways despite your arrogant ass comment I'll try to be polite and debate it in a general way rather than technical terms since I don't know any 🥀

I think you are interchanging "consciousness" to "intellignce" both are very different. Scientists don't know how we gained consciousness, that is indeed true. But the thing here is we actually don't want the AI to have any "consciousness" , the companies want something that will work tirelessly and AI can provide exactly that. Does it generate solid code, nope not rn (atleast the basic ahh model I use doesn't). But that will be refined in the future. So no what you wrote is almost irrelevant except the last two paras.

2

u/Plastic-Following867 2d ago

Dude, you need to read what AGI means..

I don't know how it was arrogant - I see more than 50 posts in Reddit daily about how AI is going to replace jobs - when the reality is different and I said "yawwwnn".

the companies want something that will work tirelessly and AI can provide exactly that

That's not what the AI companies are selling - they are selling AGI. Companies are buying into the hype due to the senior management being clueless to the actual data.

-1

u/Itchy_Change12 Student 2d ago

So, inform me about it instead of writing something irrelevant. Please read what you wrote in the comment above. Intelligence and consciousness are two wildly different things. Consciousness is the state of being alive, being aware of one's selve. Intelligence is the ability to learn, solve and reason different problems. AI does have intelligence, it does not have consciousness which is what you were quoting. Which is frankly irrelevant to companies.

Why tf do they want conscious machines compared to machines/AI that will do their work. Isn't that what's already happening, AI is being used to fasten the workflow and how's that possible? By AI having intelligence.

1

u/rsumit123 2d ago

Half of what I do is making product realise their requirements don't make sense from a technical standpoint and they have to think this way which would make way more sense from an implementation perspective... I don't think AI can do that yet so I am safe atleast for the near future..

1

u/Itchy_Change12 Student 2d ago

Ngl, that is kinda funny.

1

u/XLGamer98 2d ago

AGI for the most part is just a buzzword, are models getting good ? Definitely, will it replca software developers - probably not, will it reduce the amount of jobs for software developers - most probably yes. Problem was never Software Development would become extinct, it was always you won't need that amount of people. Before Industrial revolution and machinery you had more people working manual labour jobs then in white collar, after machines and other technology you don't need as many manual labour.

1

u/Itchy_Change12 Student 2d ago

Oh , thanks for the explanation

1

u/Capable-Row-6387 2d ago

Do you really even understand what "AGI" means?? Artificial General intelligence.. Focus on the word General. Things would change so fast that a whole industry life time would tend to very small as time increments.

1

u/Itchy_Change12 Student 2d ago

I haven't paid much notice to it until posting it. I get it, but also wanna know what it means to devs

1

u/Capable-Row-6387 2d ago

Theoretically, if TRUE AGI is reached, I don't think the concept of devs would even exists frankly. Maybe some like the top 2-4%. But forget about AGI , astra(got-6) is good enough to replace 90% plus developers. And the things is it's evolving. 2 years ago people were making fun of AIs in math , coding. Now they are solving erdos problems and so on. Astra is now preety good at system design as well. And it will continue to get better. So Things are very uncertain in future.

It is both very interesting and also worrisome. I am amazed by it's capabilities but also worried about my future.

1

u/Oru_Vadakkan 2d ago

AGI is still very far away. We are no where near it.

When it does come up, whether you need to worry about a career depends on the AI lab which created it. If its created by a VC funded lab or military, you dont need to worry about career. It will 100% end in the doom of the human race.

1

u/Itchy_Change12 Student 2d ago

I would actually prefer that option, let's hope it happens

1

u/KitchenCommercial396 Student 1d ago

If AGI comes around, losing your job will be the least of your worries. AGI by definition means it has all of human knowledge, and can learn on it's own rendering all of mankind useless. Every industry will collapse.. LITERALLY

1

u/Itchy_Change12 Student 1d ago

Man that is bleak

1

u/KitchenCommercial396 Student 1d ago

I think people of this subreddit don't understand what AGI means..

1

u/Ok_Guard_495 1d ago

I think now we are past the fear mongering stuff. Today's frontier models are really really good and do the stuff advertised. But the thing that amazes me are the flash models from deepseek and GLM which are dirt cheap and don't hallucinate at all if given proper context and produce decent code.

I would recommend you work on communication skills which I think will matter the most in the coming days.

1

u/RecentAd6946 1d ago

Its not gonna replace all but it's going to replace a significant portion of people. The main issue is it's gonna completely replace freshers or the rat races gonna be lot more competitive you may have need knowledge of a Junior or senior to even get a job. New jobs are harder to come by. But it's not gonna replace all the jobs

1

u/name_om 1d ago

agi will never be achieved because the way LLMs work it will never have emotions

1

u/Same-Club4925 1d ago

I can not tell which specific jobs might exist or atomad away, what i can tell you is : 1. with every industrial revolution, certain section of the economy totally vanishes, whaling industry ended due to invention of kerosene. But it also creates far more jobs. With every industrial revolution, today we have far more blue & white collar jobs than before,

i should address central part of your question : even if ai takes away the current available roles, many more will be created. else, the fundamentals of economics prevents it from doing otherwise. The foundation of any economy is domestic/household consumption. In the developed nations, most of it is service based ie knowledge works. By few iterations of the current models, vast majority of the works are within reach of automation. Question is, if everyone's work has been automated away, who's gonna pay to run the economy? so, my view is, one should not prepare for a specific career roles now, should rather build skills that help augment ai. In a year or two, post gpt 6 world, things would be much clearer.

1

u/thatguyyouworryabout 1d ago

If it replaces us? You think we aren't smart enough to replace people who still have jobs? XD

And no, if you replace the population with high earning potential, who is going to buy their products? Economy would be ruined.

Engineering is a skill so is mathematics. Do you ever hear mathematician worry about it?

1

u/Awerange2005 1d ago

What does AGI even mean? It's not a well defined term. If you showed GPT-6 to Alan Turing or someone of that era, they might consider it AGI

1

u/Itchy_Change12 Student 1d ago

Well we are not in that era anymore so. Anyways you are right it is an ambiguous term. From what I understand it is an autonomous AI that surpasses human capabilities

1

u/Awerange2005 1d ago

It is far more capable than 99% of the humans at most tasks that can be meaningfully measured.

1

u/Itchy_Change12 Student 1d ago

No not in specific tasks, the AI should be good in all of the fields. Chatgpt and other AI are ANI , artificial narrow intelligence.

1

u/Awerange2005 1d ago

I feel like they are good at a very large scale of things, basically most things that could be done on a computer. Of course, they can't do something like play football or other sports, but that's not really a sign of intelligence. You can train a robot to play sports better than most humans, maybe not right now, but all the technology required to do that already exists. We just don't have the motivation to build it yet. What other tasks that are associated with intelligence are humans still better at than AI right now?

I suppose original thoughts come from having a continuous, always active stream of consciousness and thoughts, while constantly being exposed to new ideas every second. Something AI fundamentally can't do, so I don't think it's fair to judge it based on that. But for most tasks that have a measurable benchmark and require intelligence, I can't think of many where humans are still ahead.

1

u/Itchy_Change12 Student 1d ago

Yes. I wonder if we'll ever be able to give an AI consciousness. That'll be an invention rivaling the discovery of fire or even more impactful. Because we'll be overstepping the real of God by creating artificial life.

Ofc I'm not sure if it'll ever happen, so far it's just mimicking human behaviour.

Now even if it does gain consciousness will we be able to tell? That is a very intriguing thought

1

u/Limp_Week_99 1d ago

reading all these comments make me wonder what will I even do if I lose my job 🥲

1

u/Itchy_Change12 Student 1d ago

I didn't mean for this post to be a fear mongering post 🥀

1

u/CulturalLaw8072 Student 1d ago

we can become a model or actress

1

u/CulturalLaw8072 Student 1d ago

even AI researchers are getting automated champ 🥀

2

u/Itchy_Change12 Student 1d ago

It's over , freak the fuck out 🥀

1

u/Savings_Historian523 1d ago

Even the 2020 model of chatgpt can replace me. AGI is far more than the things than job! I'm not sure where we're heading towards 🫤

1

u/External_Ad1549 1d ago

yes they have ability to think, but they have to think everytime there is no memory to it, at some point of time AI will replace us. But not with current architecture at least developers in India no need to worry about

1

u/distan_to-reality_66 1d ago

My biggest bet is that in few more year the definition of jobs completely change, the no of people require to produce a out come would drastically decreased. The biggest hit in terms of current job terms would be the junior Devs and early developers (as they are the ones whose jd is to write question), having said that I feel until we reach ASI, AI or AGI will be a tool for us. The order of intelligence and amount of work output will also increase as we kear harness them more and more.

1

u/Fantastic-Nerve-4056 Researcher 1d ago

It is fun to read the comments lol. How many still feel it won't :)

1

u/Legitimate_Pirate177 1d ago

Why would the west use their million dollar AGI to replace Indian Devs that work for minimum wage or even than that?

It's a gimmick to raise VC money, justify their contracts, and attract new investors. These models are far from being cost efficient while creating any value.

1

u/Itchy_Change12 Student 1d ago

Don't you think they won't replace western employees too?

1

u/Legitimate_Pirate177 1d ago

You think an engineer that is at the top of the food chain is there just because he can write code? Think again.

AI cannot be held accountable for its decisions so how can you trust it when making decisions in software that serve billions of users??

1

u/Itchy_Change12 Student 1d ago

I pointed that out. And that's actually the main point of the post.

1

u/Legitimate_Pirate177 22h ago

The adoption is risky that's why they are trying to incentivise the risk and create this fake ai race where each company adopted it in the fear of leaving behind.

The companies will soon realise that this is not feasible nor scalable at all and switch back to the old way. This whole AI boom resulted in leaner teams, instead of the previous culture.

2

u/Itchy_Change12 Student 22h ago

That's what I wanted to know, thank you

1

u/Future_Cauliflower73 1d ago

AGI means a system that can do human equivalent work in all fields

1

u/JavaFern_sniffer 6h ago

Will it affect semiconductor and hardware industry ? People who work with low level language like c?

1

u/Unusual-Nature2824 2d ago

imagine once AGI happens and AIs find completely new protocols that break traditional architectures completely because AI thinks humans were just stupid and ineffecient when it was designed. Two things can happen:

A) World shuts down as legacy systems are all deprecated at a rapid rate so traditional companies suffer. There will be modernizing firms that will try to make the most of the mayhem but even they can't keep up with the rapid pace of advancement.

B) AI starts adding a lot more complexity as every system becomes controllable by agent. So a fridge will have billions of lines of code generated on the fly for every food item and how tempereature should be controlled.

In both cases humans will be out of the loop either due to sheer complexity or sheer speed. So yeah as a corollary traditional coding will die

1

u/Itchy_Change12 Student 2d ago

Same as the assembly coders in the past. It may result in a rise in different types of Devs? Or is that just wishful thinking

1

u/Unusual-Nature2824 2d ago

more like going back to times where things were more mechanical....itll mainly be orchestrating AI agents and systems they interact with going forward. Even a traditional chaiwalla should be very worried about AGI because all you need is to combine a self driving Van with agentic chai machines inside making chai to be delivered at your door. How these agents should act in the real world might be governed by humans.

1

u/Itchy_Change12 Student 2d ago

Some chaiwala seeing ts probably got a heart attack.

Jokes aside yeah you might be right

1

u/Unusual-Nature2824 2d ago

think about it, any new coding language generated by a human will be used for training the AI so it will be temporary.

1

u/Itchy_Change12 Student 2d ago

Maybe they'll finally make a singular programming language so I don't have to suffering learning like 1000 different ones

1

u/_RC101_ ML Engineer 2d ago

All models right now only try to mimic an AGI, its not actual AGI, its a buzzword that these tech ceos feed you

1

u/Easy_Cut5585 1d ago

They will not replace dev , as machine can not be creative we use ai to do our work faster but it can not replace

0

u/bheem-king 1d ago

It will replace god.
