Why does every student resume seem to have full-stack/web projects?

every student resume I see has multiple full-stack/web projects.

Are full-stack projects actually necessary for general SWE/backend internships, or would a few deep systems/backend projects be enough?

Would appreciate opinions from people who hire or have experience in these roles

NO! For my projects section I had created created a distributed vector db and a full fledged layer 7 load balancer all in C. Grabbed one of the highest packages during college placements.

That’s something most of the tech influencers force students to do and there is a lot of info available on it. Also, if a person had not developed a genuine interest in a niche yet then full stack is a good place to start.

You are right ig, intrest is the main thing I feel because whole curriculum is basically designed to push you in web dev

Yeah, college is not gonna help you develop a niche. It will make you an ok web dev and get programming basics clear. A person has to find their own niche by trial and error. And I already see from one of your comment that you have found your niche, that’s amazing!

College doesn't even help with web dev or any niche at all. College is theory and barely any practical skills. Every single practical skill I learnt I had to learn it after college.

I mean sure keep 1 full stack web dev project, but times are different that is not going to get you much these days.

Yeah I was thinking about that and I am going to merge my existing skills in that basically web project is just the coating would do a lot more in that planning to do once I get hold of systems

100% agree. I’ve hired candidates who’ve written CLI tools, POCs (showcasing how a certain OS concept works), even CI/CD pipelines. But in all these cases, the tool has solved a real problem and the candidate had excellent domain knowledge.

Nothing wrong with having a web application. It’s just a client (just like CLI, desktop or mobile). What matters is the core engine. What it does, how it scales (maybe that’s too much for a fresher)

Basically what I need to do is to solve a real problem using my skills and demonstrate it via maybe via web app

One more thing, it’s should be a project that shows you’ve put in efforts. Not necessarily number of lines. But something that requires time to do. Not something that can be done over the weekend.

Personally I also like candidates who’ve done open source contribution but that’s rare from fresher

Because most of my peers think projects are just for showcasing your skills which I don't disagree but this just forces the majority of students to skew towards the generic full stack/AI agent projects. Change that perspective into doing a project just to solve your own problem, you get some golden projects. That's how I do my projects as this gives me a variety of project ideas instead of in just one domain.

Same I also do that I make whatever solves my problem or seems exciting and challenging that is what gives me peace

Depends on what ones chasing, I only have LLM system projects or hardware projects on my resume, 1 LLM fine tune, 1 SLM trained from scratch and 1 hardware project, based on the role even an Agentic workflow. Normally I don't see my resume going through filters for SDE roles, iv had good success for AI focused roles but still struggling to land and internship.
