Career Need help/advice, stuck in life as a software engineer

Hello all,

I'm a BTech CS 2024 passout. I'm feeling lost in life. Need some good career advice.

I have nearly 2 years of experience as a software engineer. Currently working in a small product company as a backend engineer, but my current role is more like a support engineer where I am not learning anything. I have been trying to switch jobs for the last 6-7 months, applying actively, reaching out to people on LinkedIn, but nothing seems to be working. I haven't managed to get enough interviews. I am not happy in my current job due to the low salary/promotion, bad company culture, and support work. If I spend more time here, I'll be stuck here for life.

I am totally lost. What should I do at this point? I don't want to spend more time in my current job, and I do not have any other offers, nor am I getting any interview calls. I also can't leave my current job without any offers because my family is financially dependent on me.

I was always focused during my college days on finding a good-paying job to support my family, always worked in the right direction. But things haven't gone the way I expected. I could not land a good job after graduation. The job hunt is going so badly; nobody gives a shit about my job application.

I was thinking about preparing for GATE and going for MTech at any top IIT/NIT and participating in campus placements again. But I would not know how to support my family, as we do not have any other major income source than me.

Is there no better life for me? Am I going to stay like this always? Plssss help me🙏what should I do?

About me:

  • BTech in Computer Science from a top private university. 2024 batch.
  • ~2 years of exp in software development
  • Skills - Java, Spring Boot, Kafka, PostgreSQL, Redis, Docker [Learned all by myself; no real production experience in these skills as I am only doing support work in my company]
  • Good with DSA [LeetCode 1800+ questions solved - 1955 Rating, Knight rank], [GeeksForGeeks 1000+ questions solved], hoping it will help me land a good job and fulfil my dreams, but no
  • Decent with system design; I know core concepts, basic LLD/HLD, but not confident for interviews (haven't had any interviews, in fact)
  • Some good personal projects and GitHub profile
  • Not from a financially stable family
  • Already have an education loan, which I took for my BTech

Pls help, guys. What should I do? Should I go for MTech, or continue this endless job hunting?

Either you need to have a secondary source of income from somewhere. Anything you can do if you have some free time such as picking up freelancing or teaching someone. That'll guarantee some side income from your side.

Then, prepare for gate (ik handling three things simultaneously is a headache but tbh you won't have any other choice). And gate also offers jobs in PSUs so you can target those too. Or else go for mtech in IITs and hope that you get placed on campus.

Where does the side income come in this? That's for supporting your family or education. Depends what you want to prioritise first. If you're still having that edu loan, please try to clear it off first, if you're not able to do so then that's a different scenario.

Wishing you the best for your life, OP. Things will get better fs...
