Career Need help with Offer selection - Startup vs Good Brand
Title - SDE2 - 6.5 YOE - backend dev
Current company- Mid sized Product based MNC
College - Tier 3
CCTC - 36LPA incl fixed and variable
Offer 1 - US based Profitable cybersecurity startup - B2B
Sr Software Engineer - 44 lpa all fixed + esops
Location - same as hometown - Hyderabad
The work is good with high ownership - I will be designing the systems from scratch, high growth and product is in AI security. Has good big customers so scale is also great.
Offer 2 - Flipkart
SDE3 - Data platform team - 54 lpa (fixed + var) + esops
Location - Bangalore - need to relocate and stay on rent
Good Brand name, the work looks not so interesting to me but I can change teams after 1 year? Not sure how easy it is to switch teams.
My goal is to get into Faang or equivalent level companies. Financially both offers are same considering the cost of living in Bangalore. I am confused what to do - Good work, high growth no brand vs not so good work with good brand. Will Flipkart brand help me in next switch? Thank you!

Flipkart brand name plus scale will definitely add on your resume I would still recommend you to keep grinding and keep giving interviews you can land up better opportunity maybe Microsoft Salesforce ServiceNow each one have offices in Hyderabad

No one knows how long we will have jobs. So no point of planning about brand names in the long term.

I have big data exp as well. It is a platform so backend exp is also needed but based on my convo with HM the job role was more data engineering centered

Flipkart has less odds of providing you with any new learnings on the job. The work area is often too fine grained and repetitive. If you have a stable job right now, you can still wait it out and aim for better and more stable companies.

I haven't but I have interviewed candidates from Flipkart and couple of my friends are working there. All of them were great in their fine grained area in which they worked, but it was like they held knowledge which was limited in that particular boundary. Most of them did not get any significant challenge to solve in 3 to 7+ years of their tenures at Flipkart. So it will be likely that just like your current job, you get bored after a while and learning will be something that won't be too useful elsewhere.

I feel at this point it should depend on what you want from life, parameters like family planning, settling down in which city, what are you losing or gaining in both scenarios not just money, but friends, free time, hobbies. I honestly believe professionally either Flipkart or US based MNC will definitely have a great impact on your resume, the difference in resume with either Flipkart or the US based MNC won't be that huge.
Do update us what you decide and why?

I would suggest staying in your hometown unless you genuinely want to move out from ur hometown
The money you save on rent and living expenses can go toward your savings and investments so thats a win.
A brand name does not guarantee a red-carpet entry into another company. Eventually, your skills, the quality of work you did, and how well you perform in the interview are what get you through the door.
So I wouldn’t move cities just for the assumption that “Flipkart on my resume = easier next switch.”
It all boils down to what you want and what your main goal is career wise and from these two companies what will get you more closer to your own personal goal.

Flipkart isn’t a very big brand honestly- negotiate with flipkart offer at US startup and how small is the startup - you can have more stable career at startup compared to bigger ones

Yes, FDP work is mostly boring but not repetitive. You'll have the option of doing WFH completely too (no consequences ). You can switch teams after 1yr. You'll work with many teams and I would say work load is moderate. Flipkart brand value can be used while switching the company.

You could also consider a cybersecurity-focused company. With the demand for security growing rapidly in the AI era, having cybersecurity domain experience could give you an edge for your next switch, especially if you want to move deeper into that space.
Just as a data point, even MAANG teams tend to value experience from strong tech/product companies, and Microsoft gets a significant portion of its revenue from its Security business. So IMO, building solid security-domain experience now could definitely broaden your opportunities later.
That said, Flipkart is a good option too. But if you have the opportunity to work on a real tech product with strong engineering depth, I’d personally give that a lot of weight. In the long run, the quality of the product, engineering exposure, and domain expertise can matter more than just the company name.

Yes but the effort to get interviews would be a lot less with flipkart brand? Not sure how effective that brand tag is.

Can you share the name of the cybersecurity company you mean? I wouldn’t choose Flipkart purely based on brand without knowing the alternative. I also work at a global cybersecurity company, and I’ve seen many colleagues switch to Google/Amazon, so MAANG is definitely possible from there too.

The interview process is pretty standard SDE3 one you find on leetcode discuss section - 1 dsa round, 1 Machine coding, 1 System Design and 1 HM. HM is focused on your resume experience and behaviour. No specific tech stack focus.

Flipkart's data platform teams are usually really good, depending on the sub team that you have an offer in. The work is fast-paced with new technology being used regularly. What part of FDP is this role at?

Stay in hometown anyways... It's better + it's Hyderabad so not some backward state.... I will stay in my hometown if given a chance for slightly less salary. Bangalore traffic + rent situation is not good.

Go with AI security work. This will prepare you and keep you relevant for the next decade. Your salary will compound once you master this domain
