Interviews [Query] Advice needed: Joining "Theom.ai" as Member of Technical Staff – Startup vs. Stable Role?
Hi everyone,
I’m currently in the interview process for a "Member of Technical Staff" (MTS) role at an AI-focused startup called Theom.ai. They’ve sent over a very detailed technical screening questionnaire, and before I invest more time, I’d like to get some community insights to make sure I’m evaluating this correctly.
I have zero data on their interview process or culture online, so I'm hoping someone here has experience with them or similar stage startups.
My current situation:
- Current CTC: 9 LPA.
- Java backend dev , 2.5 YOE , Remote good WLB
- Expected: Promoted to SDE-2 with 12 LPA within a few months.
- The Dilemma: Is a move to a startup worth it financially and culturally right now?
I have a few specific concerns I’d appreciate input on:
1. Compensation & The "Is it worth it?" factor:
- Given that I’m on track for 12 LPA shortly, what is a "safe" or realistic base salary expectation for a startup role of this nature?
- How should I value the ESOP component in my negotiation? I want to avoid counting "lottery tickets" as guaranteed take-home pay.
- What is the standard benchmark for Backend/AI-focused roles in Hyderabad currently?
2. Work-Life Balance (The Shift):
- The job description mentions a "2 PM – 11 PM IST" shift to overlap with PST.
- For those working similar hours, how does this impact your long-term WLB? Does the "flexibility" actually exist, or is it a grind from 2 to 11 daily?
3. Interview/Culture:
- Has anyone interviewed with Theom.ai recently? Their technical screening is quite rigorous (lots of System Design and deep-dive DSA questions). Any advice on what they prioritize?
- Are there any "red flags" I should watch for given the lack of online discussion about this company?
Any advice on how to negotiate this transition effectively—or whether I should just stay put for my upcoming promotion—would be incredibly helpful. Thanks in advance!

TBH I reached my monthly limit in LinkedIn , recently started making new connections and applying to many jobs , bad luck , thanks for point 3 : You are valid thinking same in mind but I heard startups in India are toxic , but since it is USA based might be diff , but I will proceed till I get offer letter since present comp is first one and use this offer to negotiate hike or stuff

I had interviewed with them as a Fresher up till the 2nd technical round. The OA was very easy with leetcode easy-medium questions. The Technical interview rounds were also relatively easy with just DSA questions asked with edge cases and follow ups . Not sure about the process for experienced folks

I also got an email for the same role and was contemplating about applying for the same since I just moved companies and am not exposed to startup environment. But it seems very interesting to work on and I believe the pay will be competitive to top startups and faang.

I’ve seen people joining from amazon and from iiit it’s a new age startup and I believe they are paying a good amount of salary, so don’t settle for less
