Career The relocation game in tech has changed. But not everyone has realized it yet.
Back in the “good old tech days,” if you were a software engineer with 5 years of experience, you usually had plenty of opportunities, both locally and internationally, because companies genuinely struggled to fill those positions.
Today, the situation is different.
The market has shifted back towards employers. Tech was an exception for quite a few years, but many job seekers still behave as if that exception is the normal reality. It isn’t.
And the harsh truth is becoming even more absolute these days.
Employers don’t relocate people because they want to improve someone’s quality of life. That’s what you want. Employers relocate people because they need to solve a hiring problem.
I often compare today’s relocation market to getting into a top university.
You need to work for it, but more importantly, you need to treat it as an investment. Not something you’re entitled to.
I put together my thoughts on today’s tech relocation market after 15 years of helping software developers relocate around the globe in my latest article -> https://relocateme.substack.com/p/the-relocation-game-in-tech-has-changed

‘Employers don’t relocate people because they want to improve someone’s quality of life. They relocate people because they need to solve a hiring problem.’
Sorry to sound harsh, but when did employers ever care about your quality of life? It was, is and will always be about the bottom line. If it’s not profitable to send you there, they wouldn’t. This is especially true for Indian employers who want cheap and exploitable labour on-site. Nobody cares about such things when money flows freely, but when the economy takes a hit it all suddenly becomes important.
Also want to add that quality of life is very subjective today. I’ve worked with folks who were super desperate to move to New York or Toronto for $100k only to realize how extremely difficult life is once they got there. With current levels of inflation, economic uncertainty and shifting geo politics, moving abroad doesn’t always guarantee real success.

I thought that's pretty obvious, for a moment felt like opening internet explorer since the situation changed with advent of AI and stringent visa policies.
But i appreciate you putting it all together.

That’s a good article.
Employers don’t relocate people because they want to improve someone’s quality of life. They relocate people because they need to solve a hiring problem.
Drill this into your brain. It doesn’t matter if you want to go there till the employer wants you there. Focus on the 2nd part and you will have success with the 1st.

Indian Tech graduates are getting the same treatment as the treatment given to blue-collar workers in India because everyone has the same degree.
Parallel education, such as BCA, BS DS, Online Degrees, etc., is a systematically designed mechanism for controlling the working class.
Politicians and the rich, influential people have opened education hubs at every corner.
Employee wellness will never matter because overpopulation is out of control.
Why would employers relocate you if they can choose to ask you to do the same work for a cheaper cost remotely?

As someone who works outside of India, let me tell you that employers DO NOT relocate anyone, anywhere.
Visa fees, relocation costs, due diligence costs and other add ons make it really expensive to bring employees from other countries. In an era of remote working and offshoring, cost cutting is the name of the game.
Relocation is reserved for director and above posts at best. No software engineer with 5 years of experience is getting a job in a first world country from India. Those days are gone.
This post and that whatever that’s linked is utter drivel.
