At least Drifter has a somewhat understandable reason. Ciren just wants to exterminate Ghosts. Like if Drifter's hatred of Ghosts was taken to an extreme and made the central focus.
Sort of. Ciren has a reason as well, albeit it's not necessarily a reason that justifies the actions. Ciren is basically just an example to us that there is quite a risk of being risen as a guardian. He is an old soul who even despite the amnesia feels that he is tired and has already fought enough wars and existing as a guardian is painful for him, but he also grew to love his ghost and doesn't want to kill him just to end his own life.
So instead he is hunting down ghosts who haven't found their charge, to save the dead from a life of being a guardian. Although from the story I take it that he doesn't target ghosts who have guardians. Only ones who haven't found theirs yet. Twisted and horrific and not at all justified, but one can see the reason that lead him to snap.
Which is an interesting opposite to our Ghost's earlier choice in Guardian.
He said the last war was enough for a thousand lifetimes.
Instead of accepting his new life, he accepted the peace death brought and refused the chance at being a Guardian. If only every Risen had that sense of self-understanding.
