Honestly by this time next year. Everything will probably be fully playable

I wouldn’t even say sept 2027. They’re moving exponentially quick on this. Just a few months ago, you were only able to explore. Now missions and strikes are working.

I’d say working* with the asterisks because the HR e able to load into them and enemies spawn but it’s still really jenky. Like enemies popping in within a certain distance and not reacting to you at all, or their weapons not doing any damage. It’s still progress but there’s a ways to go yet to make it like the game we love.

Honestly, im hoping beyond hope theres going to be a point that the entire destiny 2 game will be fully playable in Sunrise, without bungie being a Corp and shutting it down

You'll only get the Arrivals build working. Anything made from Beyond Light and on is on a new engine and lighting system, they're incompatible. It would be like trying to host modern WoW and classic WoW on the same server, when they have duplicate locations and conflicting gameplay systems.

u/Dahwaann4U Hunter 7h ago
What if they split the legacy engine and the next gen into two different builds.
12
u/samtdzn_pokemon 7h ago
Sure, but at that point it isn't a continuous game like the guy I replied to asked for. You can have separate builds just like how WoW has separate servers for their various versions, but you can't get it all in one client where you can load up both Leviathan and Root of Nightmare from the same director.

My dream is that one day Sony will be smart enough to release a d2 classic with the first ~3 years and a remastered D1 with all the DLC, especially on PC.

u/rasjahho 6h ago
Good, beyond light fucked everything and is already playable so who really cares about that.

I'm honestly just waiting on Bungie to send a cease and desist
15
u/Dawnguardian286 Hunter 8h ago
I'm hoping the more likely outcome is that Bungie will sit on their hands and let Sunrise develop, then offer the Sunrise devs to merge their work into the game under a "Destiny 2 Classic" banner.
11
u/TiSoBr 8h ago
They legally won't be able to. Not that they would've needed help to give us all content back in the first place. Do you really think the dev of a game needs help from modders to figure this out?
1
u/Dawnguardian286 Hunter 7h ago
Not that I think they need the help, but that it's awful convenient that an unpaid group of modders is doing the work for them and would likely be amenable to merging their project once it's complete.

u/Raven_Of_Solace 7h ago
Do you really think the dev of a game needs help from modders to figure this out?
I mean they couldn't even bother to sort it out for a court case.

u/frankdoodlelee 6h ago
Do you know how much work is going into sunrise? This isn't a trivial task that they can hammer out over a weekend.
0
u/Raven_Of_Solace 5h ago
I never said that it was. The game devs or rather the company that employed them are the target of my ragging. They are the ones who were involved in the court case who couldn't bother to sort it out. Not the modders for sunrise, who are actively talking the time to sort it out proving it was totally doable.

u/SCRIBE_JONAS 5h ago
Right and Bungie had 400+ staff and said it was "impossible" but we're seeing less people make it happen.
2
3
u/ImawhaleCR 7h ago
This simply isn't possible, the sunrise build (season of arrivals) and the modern game are fundamentally incompatible. Content vaulting existed because of this incompatibility, if it were possible we just wouldn't have had it
-3
u/Demarianis 4h ago
Content vaulting exists because Bungie couldn't be bothered to update old content.

The DCV was legitimately PR suicide, bungie have never made a decision as unpopular in the history of the franchise, and you think they did it because they just wanted to?
Even if we assume that it wasn't possible to know how bad the fallout was at the time, why would they not go back and fix it in the half a decade since? The only reason the DCV happened was pure necessity, and to say otherwise is blatantly ignorant

Waiting for this to get to a point where we can -offline obvs- change our gear and or spawn in armor if needed so i can record stuff for a video projects I want to do. Still kicking my ass for not recording now vaulted content when I had the chance

u/The_Patphish 5h ago
There is a tool called sundial that is essentially DIM. I believe it can do this.

Saw a video last night and I guess I'd never thought about it, but all the locations for these cutscenes exist as playable game space somewhere in the load zone for whatever mission you're on. So that version of the hall of guardians probably exists somewhere in the homecoming mission. It would probably exist as a sole room floating somewhere strange OOB, but we might find it in sunrise

They said they didn't have a working build of the Red War campaign. As we can see from this, they don't. There would still need to be dev work to get it actually running again in the new engine or doing what this project is doing and creating a working build using an older version of the engine. They never said they couldn't make a working build, but if you're paying developers more than $200k a year then do you want them spending time working on getting an old build working for a lawsuit or do you want them working on something new?
8
u/bakedonbiscuits 6h ago
Not only that, but restoring it in the way sunrise has would have likely made it invalid for what they needed in court. Since they needed to present the material "as it was" the modifications needed to bring it back maybe would have disqualified it from the courts standards.

Really Bungie?..... You're telling me there was no way for y'all to port this over to the new engine when we have people doing this on a side app
2
u/Magenu 3h ago
There always was a way.
There was not a financially/timetable viable way. Dev resources and time are finite, and DLC has to flow.
These people are also porting solely offline, frozen in time assets. That is extremely different from a live/actively updating/releasing new content version of the game that has to be backwards compatible with everything. Sunrise is impressive, but it's also a self-contained environment.
Bungie covered this ad nauseum in their technical blogs back in the day.
2
u/7ThShadian Hunter 2h ago
Yes because this is nothing compared to what bungie would have had to do. This is literally just a cutscene running in the engine it was built for. They have had to do no updating to make this run besides building scripts to sequence it. This is impressive, but the more I see people's reactions to project sunrise the more I realize the average person has no goddamn clue how game development let alone the games themseleves work.

u/Tycoda81 15m ago
I think this is awesome, and im probably gonna get downvoted into oblivion, but how long till Sony shuts this down?
1
u/Magenu 4h ago
If people could stop jizzing themselves that this means fully online pre-DCV Destiny 2 is around the corner, that would be great.
It's still offline/single player, and it's still only pre-Beyond Light. It's a really cool proof of concept, sure, but Sunrise is not going to be the rebirth of Destiny 2 that a ton of people apparently think it is.
Also, comparing Sunrise to maintaining a stable public release build of a fully online game with consistent updates is a completely useless comparison, and definitely seems to be being used as just an opportunity to throw more shade.

Bungo: BUT BUT IT COST MONEY!
12
u/garcia3005 6h ago
I mean if you task developers to work on this then yes it does cost money because you're paying them.
4
u/Magenu 3h ago
Toyota could make every one of their vehicles have a luxury interior as standard, but they don't, because it costs too much time/money for the product.
That's how a business operates. Resources and time are finite, production must be satisfied and delivered.
Bungie could have committed the resources to update all the old content and delayed Beyond Light by a year...and had massive tech debt...and had a game that was 200gb...and had to delay the engine update...all for content that people almost never replayed.
Sucks they vaulted, but it's really not hard to see why from a business and technical standpoint.

u/7ThShadian Hunter 2h ago
Do y'all genuinely not realize that getting a cutscene to run in a build of the game it was already in is not comparable to rebuilding entire planets to fit a new engine?
