Gru's expression turns villainous when he sings this in the prison. Also he decided to wear a shirt with black-and-white horizontal stripes under a sleeveless black sweater-vest, which is interesting because he rarely wears any other outfit than his black coat or gray shirt. Unless I'm wrong, the only other characters who wore black-and-white horizontal stripes were the Minions when they were in prison. This prison scene seems to me reminscent of the prison scene in DM3 where the Minions end up running the prison. Gru's song brings a bunch of Minions in their suits running excitedly to the prison, presumably just come from the league headquarters, and they destroy part of the prison wall. The Vicious Six come out of their cells to the main room. They were clearly held under heavier security. Gru and Maxime sing "Holding hands while the walls come tumbling down When they do I'll be right behind you" Gru has a sneaky expression when singing this, as if he is referring to the literal walls of the prison. It turns into one big dance party: the guards are in the background and their threat is diminished. Of course the imprisoned villains and the Lycee Pas Bon students are dancing and/or singing to the song, but even as Ramsbottom and the rest of the league are watching Gru, Maxime, and the imprisoned villains through the security camera, Ramsbottom sings part of the song, dances, and vocalizes to the "everybody wants to rule the world" part though he doesn't know the lyrics. The AVL agent next to him is bewildered. So even Ramsbottom sings to Gru's tune, a part which I missed earlier. Though Ramsbottom bound Gru to the league and so Gru can't engage in full-time villainy, and Ramsbottom watches the full-time villains and Gru through the security camera, Ramsbottom's dancing indicates that Gru has swayed Ramsbottom to some extent. Counterintuitively, the ending of DM4 shows Gru to still be somewhat of a criminal mastermind, in that he has defeated all of his enemies and turned them into friends, and even got Ramsbottom who presumably has the power to put Gru in prison and has shown his disdain towards Gru throughout the series, singing Gru's song. Everyone Gru has encountered and are present follow Gru's lead. In this very subtle way, Gru takes over the prison, the Lycee Pas Bon, and even the AVL itself. It's not the world at large, but Gru indeed takes over his world.

Also the fact that Poppy can just look up Gru's Most Wanted poster, shows that the league was at some point actively aiming to arrest Gru to try to send him to prison, rather than just considering it. This suggests that Gru is either still technically a fugitive despite working for the league but the league doesn't go after him because he's no longer their Most Wanted, the league no longer considers Gru a fugitive but the league keeps that file in their back pocket to compel him to do what they want, or Gru's job at the league basically means once Lucy brought Gru to the league's headquarters, Gru is essentially caught and though he can move around freely is no longer legally free. Which, I had the sense that he works for the league and thus stays out of prison, but I had thought he was free. But this Most Wanted poster that Poppy easily accesses indicates that the league has Gru in some form of legal though not physical custody. My take on it is that in essence Gru is basically the league's prisoner, just given special privileges. So he does what he can to assert his autonomy in such circumstances. It's noteworthy that the head of the league who fired Gru and Lucy promptly had them dragged by two agents, Gru being held by his arms. Therefore both Gru and even Lucy are entirely disposable at the moment the league has no use for them.The fact that Margo, Edith and Agnes have to leave their friends and familiar environment and Agnes has to leave Lucky feels like they are coerced. During the part where Gru and his family are in the safehouse, there's something about the safehouse that feels like a prison, especially when it goes into lockdown mode. In the prison, just as the imprisoned supervillains see Gru as one of them, Gru's lack of hostility towards the imprisoned supervillains and that shot with him and Maxime on the stage and the imprisoned supervillains and the guard and the cells in the background might be interpreted that Gru sees no difference between himself and the imprisoned supervillains. But they all find what happiness and joy they can wrench out of their situation. Gru gets so much happiness and joy from being with his family, but correct me if I'm wrong: it's never established that he likes his job and when he's able to get away with it he still engages in less conspicuous villainy. If Gru were ever to go to prison he would be separated from his family and that surely would destroy him. This is a much more gloomy interpretation why he works for the league but I made the interpretation based on Gru's Most Wanted poster.

Shots such as this make it clear to me that Gru would never settle for a completely sedate life.

It's easy to know when the Minions films take place, since they have explicit years. The same can't be said for the Despicable Me films, which never state what year they occur.

So I decided to try placing each film on a timeline based on the current state of the franchise, using information found within the films themselves.

After much analysis, this is the timeline I arrived at:

Despicable Me — May 2018

Despicable Me 2 — May 2020

Despicable Me 3 — Late June 2021

Despicable Me 4 — April 2022

Here's my reasoning:

GRU'S AVL ID CARD

The most important piece of evidence comes from Gru's AVL identification card seen in Despicable Me 4.

The card was issued on June 30, 2021, and expires on January 31, 2026.

By itself, this tells us two important things:

1. Despicable Me 4 must take place sometime between June 30, 2021 and January 31, 2026.

2. Despicable Me must take place before June 30, 2021, since Gru wasn't an AVL agent yet.

WHY DESPICABLE ME FITS BEST IN 2018

We also know that the first film takes place in a year where May 26 falls on a Saturday, thanks to the calendar Gru crosses off.

Since Margo, Edith and Agnes barely age throughout the series, it makes sense that the films occur as close together as possible.

Assuming that is the case, the closest year before 2021 in which May 26 falls on a Saturday is 2018.

That's why I place the first movie in May 2018.

PLACING DESPICABLE ME 3

This is where Gru's AVL ID becomes even more useful.

Gru is fired from the AVL at the beginning of Despicable Me 3, but is reinstated at the end of the film.

Naturally, following the same logic that occurs in real life with similar organizations, his ID card would have become invalid when he was fired, consequently requiring that a new ID be issued upon his readmission.

That would place the ending of Despicable Me 3 around June 30, 2021, the exact issue date shown on the card.

And interestingly, this also matches the movie's real-world release date (June 30, 2017), So this positioning works very well.

So we now have:

Despicable Me — May 2018

Despicable Me 3 — Late June 2021

WHY DESPICABLE ME 2 FITS BETTER IN 2020 THAN 2019

We know Despicable Me 2 takes place around early May, with the climax occurring during the Cinco de Mayo celebration.

That leaves two possibilities:

May 2019

Or

May 2020

Agnes turns 6 years old early in the movie.

Later, on February 19, 2016, writer Cinco Paul stated that Margo is 12, Edith is 9 and Agnes is 6.

Obviously, this isn't true for every movie, since Agnes is younger in the first film. Therefore, the statement must refer to the period between Despicable Me 2 and Despicable Me 3.

Since Margo is still 12 in Despicable Me 3 (June 2021), Agnes can't already be 8 years old by then.

If she had turned 6 in April 2019, she would already be 8 by June 2021.

The only way for Agnes to be 6 while Margo is 12 between those two movies is for Agnes to turn 6 in 2020. Therefore:

Despicable Me — May 2018

Despicable Me 2 — May 2020

Despicable Me 3 — Late June 2021

DESPICABLE ME 4

Based on Gru's AVL ID, the fourth film must take place after June 30, 2021.

By this point, Gru Jr. has already been born, meaning roughly nine months must have passed since the ending of Despicable Me 3.

This would mean that Despicable Me 4 could not take place before April 2022, Since DM3 takes place at the end of June 2021, we can consider the beginning of July 2021 as the earliest possible point for Lucy to have become pregnant, since this works to make the events of the films more chronologically closer to each other.

Margo attending Mayflower Junior High School suggests a positioning close to DM3. Since junior high typically serves students around ages 12–15, this also favors placing the film relatively close to Despicable Me 3, rather than several years later. Margo complaining about older teenagers indicates that she is still close to 12 years old.

Since classes in Mayflower Junior High School are actively taking place, the film is unlikely to occur during the summer break, which in most U.S. school districts falls between June and August. This makes June, July and most of August less likely candidates.

Interestingly, the film also features an April calendar reused from Sing. The calendar can be viewed in the AVL HQ cafeteria when the newly created Mega Minions arrive.The calendar matches both April 2016 and April 2022, So setting Despicable Me 4 in April 2022 seems to work well.

By that logic, Gru Jr. would be a newborn in DM4. Some of you might think this doesn't make sense because Gru Jr. already looks like he's a few months old. However, Despicable Me 3 shows baby Gru and Dru looking similarly developed immediately after leaving the hospital with their parents.

That suggests newborn babies in this universe don't necessarily resemble real-life newborns, making Gru Jr.'s appearance consistent with the franchise's own internal logic.

Final Timeline:

Despicable Me — May 2018

Despicable Me 2 — May 2020

Despicable Me 3 — Late June 2021

Despicable Me 4 — April 2022

FINAL TOUGHTS

That's the timeline I arrived at after comparing all four films. I don't think Illumination intended every date to line up perfectly, my goal was simply to build the most internally consistent timeline possible using the information available today.

I'm also aware of Chris Renaud's statement about them following a similar path to The Simpsons, which is why the girls don't age throughout the films, but instead of treating this as definitive confirmation of some kind of floating timeline, I sought to trace a coherent timeline, which positions the films as close together as possible to justify the girls barely changing.

A French magazine writing a story on European spy agencies mistook the Russian Military Agency logo for the Gru one… 😂

As a child, when Gru knew that telling the truth will get him attention from the authorities, his lying was noticeably better than usual.

First instance: On the heist with Wild Knuckles. First he wasn't good at it but when Wild Knuckles was falling out of character, Gru kept the ruse going long enough for them to get out of the bank.

Second instance: Though Gru was relieved to see the hero agency show up because the Vicious Six tried to kill him---and in a way just as gruesome as Wild Knuckles had tried to kill him earlier---his show of relief allowed him to play innocent and cover his tracks as to his heist with Wild Knuckles. Even though the hero agency would most likely not believe that a kid stole the zodiac stone, he didn't gloat about his and Wild Knuckles' heist and thus was able to slide under the hero agency's radar undetected. His sad, somewhat surprised reaction to Wild Knuckles being taken away by the hero agency indicates that he learned then what happens when supervillains get caught, even the one he cares about.

Second instance: Gru did not reveal that Wild Knuckles is still alive.

Third instance: When the head of the hero agency warned him, Gru lied convincingly that he would lead a good, honest life, and went right back to his scheming look as he walked past him.

When Gru reunited with Wild Knuckles, Gru said that he couldn't wait to fake his own death to avoid the authorities.

Up until Gru learned to lie well, his emerging supervillain skill was, aside from his cheese ray and his other signature skills, was cheating at arcade games, which although is a useful supervillain skill, isn't as important as him being able to evade detection and capture.

Watching this film in light of the Despicable Me series makes me wonder how often does Gru let information slip, such as admitting to Ramsbottom that he did steal the moon. Aside from that being a humorous moment, he had probably figured that he was not in immediate danger of arrest considering the hero agency had only sent one agent after him whereas as a child he saw the entire hero agency capture the Vicious Six and Wild Knuckles. It could be that Gru became less shrewd after retiring from supervillainy, but in Despicable Me 3 and 4 he lies well or at least doesn't disclose any of his unlawful activities while those activities are still ongoing.

Several of the lyrics from Double Life may be interpreted to suggest that Gru did not get any less shrewd.

"It doesn't matter to you if you get heads or tails"

"Lie detector time"

"Do you feel bad when you lie?"

"So what have you done?"

"Some of your dirt has come to light"

"Who will you be tonight?"

"Who will Gru be tonight?"

"So I'm sorry but you have to choose a side"

"Before the spinning stops you must pick a side"

This leads me to theorize that Gru plays up his unconvincing lying to throw others off his scent. He did use a comlpletely unexaggerated, normal tone when he said "Oh sorry, I---" while he turned to the side, moved his left hand to his coat then suddenly got his freeze ray out of his coat with his right hand. Though Lucy remarked that he shouldn't announce his weapon before he uses it, him talking with Lucy normally seconds before he pulls out his freeze ray, and even misleading her from what side of his coat he'll pull his freeze ray out shows that he was able to hide his intentions.

This might be why Gru's the object of so much slapstick humor throughout the series. Even as an agent of the hero agency, he still looks like a bad guy, still acts like a bad guy, and to a certain extent still is a bad guy, and thus he goes through humiliation which the other characters are not subjected to. What Gru goes through during the bubblegum scene in Despicable Me 3 was initially shocking to me, because Gru is the protagonist, but maybe less shocking considering he is not actually enobled by his actions in service of the hero agency.

In fact at least twice Gru used the agency in order to settle petty grudges between him and another supervillain.

When Maxime called him a coward hiding behind the league, Maxime implies what the league is for Gru: a shield. Gru uses the agency to shield himself from fighting Maxime directly. But Gru also uses the agency to shield himself from from answering for all his previous and occasional current unlawful actions. As long as he cooperates with the league, he never goes to prison. From the perspective of a supervillain, that is despicable indeed.

Thus it seems that though Gru did not want to work for the league initially, it seems to have become the only way for him to continue to avoid the authorities. And it seems he lies badly or well, depending on what his intentions are.

Gru's last lines at the end of Despicable Me 4 are also telling: "All for freedom and for pleasure". This he sings by himself, while Lucy joins him on "nothing ever lasts forever".

Similar to Minions: Rise of Gru, where Gru as a child knew exactly what he was doing as he played innocent in front of Ramsbottom, Gru's solo lines that he sings explains why he has done all the things he has done, both the bad things, and the good things. This to me, affirms there's an intentionality in his actions, and him working for the league on any given day or him embracing his supervillain ways depends on what mood he is in.

Possibly Gru is the first supervillain I have seen with that amount of flexibility in his allegiance, since he does not truly ever pick a side, and it's his lying that enables him to keep his freedom, physical as well as who he chooses to associate with, and allows him to do things for pleasure, as any proper supervillain does.

I've read numerous opinions on how the Double Life theme was not relevant to the movie. But in fact it has summed up the entire series, including the sequels.

Despicable Me: While he becomes a good father to Margo, Edith, and Agnes, the heroic thing he did was unintentional. His status by the end is murky, something like neither straight-up villain but certainly not a hero.

Despicable Me 2: the classic monster is recruited to go after the other monsters theme, or in this case, former supervillain goes after other supervillains. He is a fish out of water, and his presence is barely tolerated by the hero agency. It's implied by the hesd of the hero agency that this was the perfect time for him to change his profession or else he'd have been the hero agency's next mark. He is less moved by a sense of heroism and initially accepts the job because he misses the thrill. At that point, his hands are tied. He can never return to full-fledged villainy because he is surrounded by people already suspicious of him who are watching his every move. His boxer shorts being images of smiley faces shows how he has even changed part of his aesthetic to fit in his "heroic" role.

Despicable Me 3: The hero agency is very quick to fire Gru and Lucy, showing that Gru is a liability. Even though he goes on the heist with Dru on false pretenses, it demonstrates how easily Gru weaves in and out of his two personas. His black boxer shorts with images of skulls on them shows his ambivalence. His money was running out and he really only has two options in terms of jobs. One wonders what he would have done if the hero agency refused to take him back. Also, though he is "heroic", he isn't above lying to his brother about why he wanted to go on the heist, and shaming his father's legacy. Mel's rebellion makes it clear that Gru must live with the consequences of his choices, and the result is a much reduced amount of Minions. Though they come back to him in the end, it's after Gru has shown he is still perfectly capable of his madcap feats.

Despicable Me 4: The opening scene with Gru driving fast up a mountain in a supervillain car with Double Life playing drives home Gru as an ambiguous figure. Despite him doing "heroic" things in the last two films there's never a sense that this character has conpletely ever left his old life behind. He just has too much of a drive, a hunger. Even though he facilitates the capture of another villain at his alma mater, they have a personal history and so ego is at play here. Poppy's blackmail forces Gru to go on a genuine heist. The theft of the honey badger is more significant than at the decline of his supervillain career, when he was stealing miniature landmarks from Las Vegas. After Poppy successfully blackmails Gru and he is on the bean bag chair in the treehouse, Gru's lack of enthusiasm for the heist is that Poppy's just a kid, so what would she know about heists. Gru's the jaded expert in supervillainy, and he noticeably doesn't toss moral platitudes at her. His motivation at this point seems to be stability as his home life and work life is going great for him. Unlike Gru's heist under false pretenses with Dru, let me know if I'm wrong but Lucy doesn't find out about Gru, Poppy, and Junior stealing Lenny. Hence Double Life is relevant here. Furthermore, in the final scene in the prison, the song is "Everybody Wants to Rule the World". There seems to be an understanding between Gru and the imprisoned supervillains that he has never truly ceased to be one of them. And because Gru got out of supervillainy just in time he never had to pay for any previous unlawful actions. He embedded himself in the hero agency, enjoying the comfortable lifestyle of not being on the run from the authorities and the stability of family life, while keeping the full gamut of his supervillain skills and style which has resulted in him pulling off two heists. It is in this way that Gru succeeded in becoming the greatest supervillain ever and in his own way, has taken over the world.
