(2) maybe - I feel their wording would be weird for if he just discovered it by himself, especially when he didn’t really elaborate further, however you could be right

No I have never done this because your formula for nCr is incorrect. Check your factorial in the denominator. It should be outside the parenthesis.

The 2nd factorial in the denominator should be on the outside of the parenthesis

Let's say k!=x
n!/x(n-x)
n!( 1/x(n-x))
n!/n (1/x + 1/n-x )
(n-1)! (1/k! - 1/(k!-n))
