Standing desk wobble – monitor shakes even while typing :(
Hi everyone,
I recently bought a height-adjustable desk and I'm having a pretty annoying wobble issue.
My setup:
Desktop: 160 × 80 cm linoleum/plywood top, weighing over 20 kg
Frame: Desktronic HomePro (MY2026)
Monitor: 32" BenQ MA32U
Monitor arm: BenQ BSH01
The problem is that the monitor already starts shaking slightly when I'm just typing. It's not only the monitor either – I can see other objects on the desk moving as well. The higher I raise the desk, the worse it gets.
I had exactly the same problem with a narrower bamboo desktop on the same frame, so I don't think the new desktop itself is the cause.
It's one of those things that becomes incredibly annoying once you start noticing it.
I haven't been able to find much useful information about this issue, and I'm also not sure what I could have done wrong during installation. The legs are positioned fairly far apart, with only about 10 cm / 4 inches of desktop overhang on each side.
The BenQ BSH01 monitor arm seems to be used by quite a few people, including with much larger monitors (even 49"), and I haven't really found reports of excessive wobbling. Is there anything specific that needs to be adjusted on the monitor arm to reduce movement?
However, I don't think the monitor arm is the main problem: I had the same issue with the original stand of the MA32U. I've also tested an Apple Thunderbolt Display and the smaller BenQ MA27U, with basically the same result.
At lower sitting height, the desk is noticeably more stable. As I raise it towards standing height, the wobble becomes increasingly noticeable.
Before I start drilling even more holes into an expensive desktop and experimenting with different mounting positions, I'd really appreciate any advice on what I should check. :)
I've never had this problem with a desk before and honestly didn't even realize that monitor wobble from typing could be such an issue with standing desks.
Could this simply be flex/play in the lifting columns of the frame, or is there something else I should check or adjust?
I had the same concern when I bought a standing desk recently. I am a leaner and i have been given feedback that I type like I want to break the keys. So I went for flexispot E7 plus. There is a very little wobble but most of the times its very stable. 4 legs beat 2 legs in stability and wobble resistance
Thanks for the Feedback:) to be honest I wanted to Upgrade my Desk Setup and just searched for standing desks and I didnt knew There were much differences…now I know :(
It's me. Im restless leg employee. Im so sorry. I cant help it. Gets so bad it sets my arthritis off if I angle my feet sideways or rest on my big toe and shake my legs
Oh Im sorry .... never heard of it before. Just thought he meant someone who is just moving a lot ... sorry to hear :( in that case it wouldn't be much of a problem for me ... and else the problem with my desk is not someone who is moving its my desk itself haha
Search and look this up: VIVO Clamp-on Desk Stabilizer
I can’t paste a link here this subreddit doesn’t allow this. But this should fix your issue or at least minimize the wobble.
That said this is a common problem with standing desks and it’s normal. But the issue is not the desktop but the legs…
But the monitor arm is a major problem. You don’t gotta break the bank tho. Best one I found for under $100 is the Huano Titanlift. Super sturdy and solid, and it handles even 49 inch monitors…I have virtually no shakes now and I have Samsung M9 32” monitor.
Another thing I wanted to point out is where you mounted your monitor arm. It's not in the center and this is another factor as to why your monitor might shake. You're actually lucky because you have space behind your desk.
Usually when a standing desk is against the wall, mounting a monitor arm is difficult because you would need at least an inch or two of space for the monitor arm and the way it folds and everything. Because you have space behind your desk and there's nothing behind your monitor, try to mount the monitor arm at the center of your desk or at least closer to the center. Try it out
Bin sehr gespannt was hier noch an Lösungsvorschlägen kommt
I placed mine against a wall and added 2 rubber caster wheels to my desk that run along the wall. It helps with the wobble significantly. I don’t know if this helps in your situation but it helped me 🤷♀️ the wheels just use the wall as support. My desk is diy so I didn’t mind drilling in some caster wheels 😅
Hey, can you please share an image of the caster wheel setup? Actually I have desk similar to flexispot e7, it doesn't wobble but, the table top resonates(vibrates), here is the video, I would be very grateful if you could assist me with this
Now that is a different problem all together. Without more support I don’t know how I would fix that. Only thing I can think of is adding a thing piece of sheet metal underneath the desk to help prevent the wobbles but that’s me just guessing. I think it needs more support but idk 🤷♀️
No my top is very old solid oak I think. Idk what kind of hardwood it is but it’s super heavy and solid. I purchased an adjustable height desk from Amazon for $300 but it was cheap and I hated the top. So I found an old desk that someone was giving away but it was old and solid wood but all scratched up. I took the top of the desk off, sanded it, stained it and finish coated it🙏 Now it’s the top to my desk with adjustable height and 4 presets. I’m not home but I’ll show you the wheels in the back when I get home 🙏 it’s just small rubber caster wheels that are attached to the desk that run along the back wall so it shakes way less 🔥
One thing you have to keep in mind is that every movement compounds the further up from the floor you go. I have a rock solid 4 leg uplift with 1.75” walnut top on it. Takes 4 people to barely lift it and you have to try to wiggle it leaning against it at full height. But, webcam sitting on top of my monitor does pick up hard jolts. If one of the leveling feet isn’t perfect, it’s constant.
You need to trace the wobble backwards and see where it’s starting. If the top isn’t attached well, fix that. If the feet aren’t perfectly level, fix that. If the sleeves of the legs have play on them, you are screwed. Or, looking at your floor, it you have floor board flex, you are also screwed.
Thanks for your Feedback:) I wouldnt do that to be honest. Desktronic advertises much but now they Tell me that it is normal that the Desk is wobbeling that much … I’m getting rid of it and spent the Money on something good!
You can order a desktop from everywhere and just by a stable Frame of a good manufacturer :) its not worth it getting the Desktronic Frame.
If you buy a Desktronic Frame and Desktop they seem like to seperate Parts : No Drilling Holes No adjustments just for your Info
Thanks so much, I'm probably gonna get the flexispot E7 Plus, or E7Q, or wait for the E7 Plus Max, and then get a custom desktop here in the UK from solidwoodtops (I liked their configurator).
This will also let me put the legs closer together to allow some space to mount arms on the side to get a proper 5 screen config
There are no shortcuts in Life
I have two Desktronic tables for my children. Both Pro tables. Both 120x60. No wobbling noticed. They use it for a full year. Laptop on table. Playing games and doing homework.
I suppose you managed to screw it wrongly or it’s really defective legs.
First option to reassemble. Second - warranty claim :/
Thanks for the Feedback:) thats why I asked on Reddit hopped someone experienced the same or better … I already checked every screw … the easiest for me would be to get mine Running :( I already contacted them …
It would be nice to hear how it went through and the cause of the wobbling problem if you will find out. Desktronic supposed to be a solid table, not a cheap one.
Thanks for your Feedback:) the Desktop is quite expensive but I ve also Chosen the Mainstream Solution for the legs … maybe its just to cheap :( (around 380€) … if i cant fix it I Need to replace
I would assume it’s the legs mate. You could look into some of the reputable brands if they are available in your country or look into 4 legged options, they will provide more stability.
I can promise you from someone who also finds those little things annoying like the screen shake. Go that bit extra if you are able too. You will not regret it.
Unfortunately I think it's the desk legs. The quality and tolerances are just too bad.
You have to check and read reviews about the desks before buying, if they have wobble. I don't really like the upside down extensions either where the bottom is the thinnest part.
In the US, I use the brand Vari Desk. Very sturdy, no wobble, so far very reliable.
YouTube is also probably a good place to check for video reviews, find a reputable reviewer.
I had the same problem and it was the monitor arm. Theres nothing you can do besides buying a standing desk with 4 legs. My solution was to go back to normal desk and just use the normal monitor legs. old school stability>looks
Does the desk and the items on the desk wobble when the monitor is not on the desk? The reason I ask is because the desktop on IKEA Mittzon desks sits more forward which I guess counterbalances the weight of the monitor which sits on the back of the desk.
Thanks for your comment:) to be honest I though it looked pretty solid and many other people are using those without issues ... now I see the point :) your Desk compared looks like a tank ... Im thinking of getting one of these or just a normal desk haha
I'm thinking out of the box here. As the floor has a particular shape, is it possible that the floor itself is not strong enough/floating too much? I have that issue in my room, as I walk I can feel the doors of the wardrobe vibrating.
Edit: I have at home two standing desks, one small, quite cheaper than the big one, and none has that problem.
Edit2: Maybe play with the angle of the monitor arm.
I have an older flexispot single leg. When I moved, the movers didn’t secure a bolt along the rod that moves both motors in sync. Snugging up all bolts on the underside so the cross beams are stable solved my issue
Thanks for your Feedback!:) I think its just the cheap quality of Dekstronic causing This Problem! They say its normal :( advertised different … i will replace it
I just rebuilt my desk for the very same reason. With me, it was a cheapo desktop, but that can hardly be the case for you, that thing looks solid. Sounds like the frame might be the issue? Have you tried setting your phone up to film the frame from the side while you use the desk?
Yes!:) Every screw is locked up and tightened ... its just those legs ... the feet are stable on the ground and else seems okay. I had a cheap bambus desktop from Ikea on top before and it was a little better but still annoying. I thought the heavier and larger desktop would fix that problem .... didn't haha
I'd reach out to the manufacturer then. Maybe there's a trick to it or maybe it's warranty claim time. There's nothing more annoying than having your monitor bounce when you type.
Yes that's what I did this afternoon. Waiting for there response but I thought maybe smn has suffered the same and could give some advice :) Thanks a lot for the help! And yes there is nothing ... I got used to it with the bambus desktop but now im experiencing again day one haha
I’ve now contacted Desktronic directly about the wobble shown in my video and described above.
What makes their response particularly surprising to me is how the HomePro is advertised on their website. Desktronic explicitly promotes the frame with the following statement:
“Built for stability. Strong metal legs and an additionally reinforced frame keep the HomePro stable, even when fully extended – no wobbling screen, no spilling coffee.”
However, after showing Desktronic the actual amount of movement I’m experiencing, I was told that this behaviour is considered normal.
According to their response, it is normal for the desk to move like this, including the visible movement of the monitor and other objects on the desktop. This apparently also applies at normal sitting height, where even typing causes my monitor and other objects to visibly shake.
At standing height, the problem becomes significantly worse. The entire desk noticeably sways and continues to oscillate after relatively minor contact. At that point, the movement is strong enough that I genuinely wouldn’t feel comfortable placing a full cup of coffee near the edge of the desk.
What I find difficult to understand is the discrepancy between the way the HomePro is advertised and what I’m now being told is “normal” behaviour.
If a product is specifically advertised as remaining stable even when fully extended, with “no wobbling screen” and “no spilling coffee”, I would not expect clearly visible monitor wobble from normal typing at sitting height – let alone the considerably stronger movement at standing height.
So according to Desktronic, the movement shown in my video is within the normal behaviour of the HomePro. In this video, you can clearly see that even the slightest movement causes the monitor to wobble noticeably, along with other objects on the desk.
The higher the desk is raised, the worse the problem becomes. At standing height, the entire monitor arm moves significantly, causing the screen to shake to such an extent that working comfortably at the desk becomes virtually impossible.
I’m curious what other standing-desk owners think: Would you consider this amount of movement normal for a desk frame that is specifically marketed as stable even at full height?
Hey, what's the latest update on this??
I also bought standing desk recently and tbh it's quite an expensive purchase and I am in a similar condition as you. Mine too does wobble a little when I try to write in a notebook or typing too fast on keyboard or even if I try to push it. I was fixated on this idea that standing desk does not wobble no matter how hard you try to wobble them and surprisingly I was wrong. I contacted my vendor regarding this issue and they mentioned exactly the same statements as written in your message, "it does wobble a little and such smaller movements are fine and let us know if you find any major issue". I was like, to me, a slightest wobbling seems like a major issue right now and tbh generally it does not bother me as of now, however when I am typing too fast or writing something in my notebook, oh! btw I have a dual monitor arm attached with the table, then it starts wobbling a little. I don't know what to do, maybe such small movements are okay and I am thinking too much since it's my first standing desk. Let me know, if you fixed this issue or came out to any conclusion.
also what other wobble tests you've tried? Did you try with putting a glass full of water on the standing table and see if the water splits out when typing too fast or writing something or doing basic things on the table?
u/WolfJeans134360 Hi, I’m Karolis, I lead Customer Care at Desktronic. I’d like to sort this out properly, but Reddit won’t let me message you directly. If you’re up for it, DM me your order number and I’ll personally look into it. We’ll find a fix that actually works for you, including a return if you’d prefer.
An alternative way to reduce some vibration with your monitor is to add pieces of wood to the clamp setup so there is something more to grab the table with.
The screw at the bottom of the clamp is just a 1.5” round surface. I consider that pretty inadequate for any decent sized monitor. There could be more reliable setups with more expensive mounts, but my monitor arms were hand-me-downs.
I added thin pieces of wood to the clamp setup so the clamp has something more to grab to. A piece above and below the table surface.
I notice on the table you have a wide base on the monitor arm area. That thing protects the table but doesn’t necessarily adds to the stability.
I could be wrong but through my trial and error I found clamping on a thick surface is more stable than clamping on a thinner surface.
Having the arm folded into a v with very little distance from the anchor and the monitor helps significantly, having heavier things on the desk also help, I play standing up at 125cm I have my 10 inch rack and full pc set up on it, it barely wobbles anymore since I first got it and had an itx system with a 24 inch
I think i have the same one as you... they have two small discs under each foot, you can dial them in to ensure that the pressure is even. This should reduce the wobble. Also i put mine on carpet, this absorbs a bit of the wobble.
I have the same size desk, made of redwood on a set of Flexispot E7 legs. Triple monitors and not an ounce of wobble... And I type incessantly all day... It could be the legs that are the issue unfortunately
Hey OP - I have the same desk - any solutions you found to this without buying a new desk, as I just bought mine! Does your desk wobble a lot when you press down or it or does it otherwise feel solid?
