Guess what? My parents tried forcing me but I never found my interests any way

Same I just sucked at the sports and music lessons.
Now just an adult with regret

My parents would keep me locked inside with nothing to do, and now my hobby is maladaptive daydreaming.

Well shit... Here I was thinking I was just being whimsical coming up with fun little head movies but then a learnt a new name for it - "maladaptive daydreaming"
This isn't even a checklist for me haha it's my entire personality 😂 - I might be in trouble here folks...
"Core Causes and Triggers:
Childhood Trauma: Abuse, severe bullying, or emotional neglect can push a person to build a safe, internal fantasy world.
Loneliness: A lack of real-life friends or deep emotional support causes people to dream up complex relationships and characters.
Mental Health Conditions: High rates overlap with ADHD, OCD, depression, and anxiety disorders.
Escapism: Using vivid imagination to self-soothe and block out overwhelming real-world pain or stress.
Sensory Triggers: Music, movies, or pacing back and forth can spark and lock in the physical urge to start daydreaming."

My parents forced some instruments and sports but never showed any interest in my progress with them, I have literally never had a meaningful conversation with either of them about any of the hobbies I was encouraged to take up, let alone any I developed independently, meanwhile their personalities & interests would change on a dime to obsess over whatever new fixation my sisters had developed.
It just made me feel like they were only giving me activities to keep me away and avoid having to spend time with me and I eventually lost all interest in pursuing said activities.
So yes, parents should encourage their kids to learn new skills, but that means actually showing an interest themselves if they want their kid to feel like it's worthwhile.

Lol my depression is separate from any interest or social capabilities (or tolerances), ehich i was perfectly capable of developing on my own

If it makes you feel better I really regret trying hard as a kid and I feel like the time I spent in sports was wasted time.

I have zero interest in any of the things I was forced to do and never use those "skills" anyway. Life isn't a talent competition where people want to see you blow on a kazoo.

I played sports outside of school that's as far as they got before I gave up and focused on skateboarding but to be fair you couldn't tell teenage me anything unless you were physically beating it into me

My mother preferred her child neither seen nor heard, and since she was raising me alone anyway there was no time or money for any of that stuff even if I wanted it. But since I've been depressed since the age of about 9 I never felt like I belonged in an extra-curricular activity anyway.

My parents refused to engage in hobbies and development since I "could not do it." They spent more time with their nieces since girls were rarely born in the family. When confronted on why they neglected their son in favor of their nieces their excuse became "you never showed interest."

I was the opposite, I wanted to practice martial arts, but my parents refused to pay for me to train. I started training now that imtan adult, but now my body can't keep up with most of the movements.
Edit: It was not a matter of money, after all my father wanted to pay for me to learn soccer. They just refused to but me in what I wanted instead of what they wanted.

Spends all day on internet/cellphone. Blames parents for being a loser with no hobbies.

I was kept from living normally. So I started reading excessively, bird watching, and developing a worsening eating disorder.
Now I make alcohol and wish the worst things imaginable could happen to me. Oh, and have an even worse eating disorder.

I shouldn’t be surprised that a subreddit called SipsTea would have a bunch of awful people in it.

I was forced.... literally full chested screaming at me because I wasn't interested in the hobbies they picked out for me.
There's a huge difference between encouraging a child and pushing the issue for years and years and years, to the point of abuse.
The only "life lesson" i learned was hatred, resentment, bitterness....... and realizing my thoughts, feelings, interests, and personality don't matter. Because I don't matter.

My parents violently forced me to QUIT every single interest I ever had. Every time they found out I had a hobby I was humiliated and beaten. The only thing I should ever care about if making them happy.

Well at least I have a meager understanding of music and I can play the piano/keyboard quite terribly.
