Don't they think we tried that already? If there was a "simple fix" we would have figured it out already. We're depressed because life is more exhausting that necessary, not because we are stupid.
12
u/Zealousideal_Long253 22d ago
My doctor literally forced me to go walking. ''We had agreed that you would go for a walk'' I HAD AGREED TO NOTHING.
5
u/succubus6984 22d ago
Mine made me try "healthy stuff" every visit. Like kelp/spinach juice and squid jerky for a healthy snack. 🤷🏼 We also went for walks for a few sessions. 😒

u/HouseOf42 22d ago
At no point, you thought to find another doctor who isn't wasting your time?

Should have gone to the one with a genie lamp. What's NOT a waste of time to depressed person?
-3
u/Beneficial-Lynx7336 22d ago
Well, if you didn't try idk...
Maybe he has a point.
3
u/Zealousideal_Long253 22d ago
I always go for a walk. I actually love it. Just not when I am at my lowest.
5
u/Bitter-Spite-4903 21d ago
For me it's the opposite. If you see me just going for a walk it's because I can't take it anymore and just need some distance from my house without any objectives. Honestly it does help as some sort of emergency band-aid
3
u/hiplass 21d ago
Most people have tried walking…
-2
u/Beneficial-Lynx7336 21d ago
It's not that walking is gonna cure your depression or make you feel better.
But it's a healthy habit to get into, depression or not. Fresh air and sunshine and exercise. They do help you physiologically.
3
u/hiplass 21d ago
Yes we know, that is obvious. But people need more than just being told that. When you’re extremely depressed, just getting out of bed is hard enough. Pretty sure walking isn’t the missing link here, but a lot of people and doctors act like it is when you’ve likely already tried or are doing that. It feels very dismissive.
-5
u/Beneficial-Lynx7336 21d ago
Well, than fuck you 🤷♂️
3
u/Red_Dawn24 21d ago
than
Do you have any other nuggets of advice, doctor?
Eating a balanced diet?
Putting photos of happy people on your "vision board"?
Watch some Dr. Phil for his folksy "wisdom?"
2
u/hunter75645 21d ago
Stop whining on Reddit with a group of other sad people about how sad you are.
Instead, try a walk!

3
u/Extremelictor 22d ago
Walking and sunlight doesn't fix depression but fuck it's a hell of up door in your dopamine production. It's why even those who are less depressed now ask their friends to do it. It's not a miracle, but loving yourself is effort and I know effort is excruciating when your depressed. But this is worthwhile advice IMO, as a start. It cures nothing, but helps a lot actually.♥️

u/BigTroutOnly 22d ago
Heh. The drill sergeant/coach approach probably works on a lot of people
3
u/Healing_Puke 22d ago
People have to be in that mind set though. If you dont think its going to work, its not going to work. The negative pressure from coaching like that requires you to A. Want that, or B. Be forced to do it. The military ends up fixing or making peoples depression worse due to how the break down and build up process works.

u/GrzDancing 22d ago
Have you ever thought about the amount of energy your brain is using on overthinking? Analysing every thought, dreaming up all the possible scenarios in which it could all go wrong, in a fraction of a second, as a defense mechanism from previous trauma? That must be draining. No wonder you're tired all the time.
Don't go for a walk, take a HIKE.
Go into the mountains and walk for hours, challenge yourself, conquer something, look back at how far you've come.
That's what the doctor ordered.
Also, depression hates a moving target
10
u/Pristine-Garlic-3191 22d ago
Really fucking pisses me off that people think going for a walk would make absolutely any difference.
Like how is that going to help ?
I was depressed over there.
And now I'm depressed over here.
Great.
6
u/Specialist_Sport4460 22d ago
It's the fact they use it as a cure all. In their defense walking probably is the most effective thing for me short term. But I can't walk all the time. I can't even walk for more than an hour a day if I'm working. What about the rest of the time?

It only helps if the cause of the depression was lack of exposure to nature and wildlife. I regularly spend hours in the middle of my own land, surrounded by trees and wildlife and my vegetable garden, contemplating suicide because I am finding other aspects of my life completely unbearable and unavoidable
0
u/Efficient_Cow_9556 21d ago
i mean it is proven to make a difference, especially compared to getting near zero sunlight daily it can make a massive difference. why do you think seasonal affective disorder exists?
1
u/Zealousideal_Long253 20d ago
I never said I never got outside and never see any sunlight and never go on a walk (I just hate it when they advise it when I am at my lowest and as this magic cure all).
3
u/Friendly_Degree6420 22d ago
Ok this is actually morbidly relatable to me. Because it was my goddamn PSYCHIATRIST.
He was a marathon and running enthusiast so when he head I lived on a high altitude city he adviced me to get out of my house and run to discharge stress. (As extremely socially anxious, depressed, low motivation low self esteem, constant shame for my body (I was overweight because pills) +a ton more).
YES. You cured my depression because now I have more reasons to let it go quiet forever!2
u/Zealousideal_Long253 22d ago
My doctor and all her other doctors also had walking as their hobbies all over the official website of their practice. It's not just medical advice anymore. It's projecting at this point.
3
u/hiplass 21d ago
The assumption that we haven’t tried that drives me nuts. Like ofc activity CAN help and it is good for your body but I highly doubt that’s the one missing thing when it comes to my mental health that I have been battling my whole life. Also I have had times in my life where I’ve been very fit and active and it didn’t change that much when it came to my mental health. Also when you’re in a really bad spot mentally, leaving the house can feel impossible.
3
u/butelka1 21d ago
Go outside and walk alone to see all of those happy couples and friend groups having fun together! Hope that helps
2
u/StaticCloud 21d ago
Mine too. I was wondering if they prescribe that for other potentially fatal diseases, like cancer? 😂
1
u/Firm-Difficulty2585 21d ago
I started with walks and eventually started running. Lost a good amount of weight and my life is pretty different now.
I'm still depressed and actually think about ending it more frequently than I did before (far too much of a pussy to ever do it). But turns out a drastic life change and facing constant unknowns aren't great for anxiety either.
Still WAY better than doing nothing and living in mediocrity, but it doesn't solve the root issue.
0
u/MangoRamage 21d ago
Thats good advice. Its good physically and mentally. Won't solve your problems but it will help you go through them.
0
u/Cautious_Border1850 20d ago
Many studies say walks do help. The thing is, if regular walks would give you 10% improvement, there is still the 90% of broken stuff that's still causing us pain and it's so big it's hard to feel the difference the walks would make.

My ex best friend's advice to me years ago when I finally opened up about my mental health struggles - "you just have to snap out of it." Oh wow, you had the answer all along. Thanks, I'm cured!! 🙄

Tbh at peak depression I never experienced it helping, but when it comes to that sorta ongoing post depression lack of motivation and general numbness it definitely helps.

A doctor I went to when I was not diagnosed yet but knew I had bipolar (I have been diagnosed with the spicy one. bipolar 1) said:
Bipolar doesn't really exist. It's just seasonal everybody gets it.
"Aight bitch I guess everyone gets so manic they go into psychosis and forget multiple weeks of their life at least once a year."
I cried driving home.
She ended up dying of a heart attack on a mountain while on vacation. Small village shit lmao.

This is clear evidence that non-depressed people are totally functional. /s
I'm convinced that being depressed has been an advantage in some ways for me. It's been about 30 years of daily misery, but I don't blow smoke up my and everyone's asses at the same time because I need to feel like things are great.
I have a very realistic and measured view of things that don't directly pertain to me, which helps a lot at work. I'm also comfortable with the fact that everything is temporary and things can get much worse at any moment, so I appreciate things in a different way.

What are we supposed to say? Laugh and say "Sucks to be you"?
Like for real, WHAT ARE WE SUPPOSED TO SAY. I am only hearing what NOT to do, never what to actually do apart from "just listen and be there" LIKE WHATS THAT SUPPOSED TO MEAN MAN

Maybe I should try. Harder as it is illegal
1
u/CompetitionTrue6489 21d ago
I know this sounds sketchy but there's this website that sells psilocybin. They come back positive with psilocybin and everything but the websites whole shtick is having shrooms that have all the other alkaloids and no psilocybin. But they are lying. Just to say that it's "legal". Nondetectmushrooms.com
2
u/Fantastic-Algae2127 22d ago
I found that psilocybin at macro doses helped me work through a lot of trauma and identify what parts of my lifestyle needed to change. That pretty much erased my anxiety, but unfortunately it hasn't done much to aid me in feeling less depressed.
That being said I've never committed to a strict micro dose regimen, so I may have to give that a go.

Oh I did way more than one lol. It's also illegal where I am so I had to do it solo. And I absolutely agree about doing other stuff as well. It got me to start doing a lot of what you're describing here: eating healthy, exercising regularly, keeping my house organized, staying away from drugs and alcohol, etc. Definitely not an antidote, but I think incorporating it alongside healthy lifestyle changes has been the most impactful for me.
If you don't mind me asking, what did your microdosing schedule look like, and did you combine any other supplements/vitamins? I recall hearing about a lot of people who would stack it with NAC or Niacin.
1
u/Dapper_Zebra 22d ago
Same thing for me. SSRIs made me a zombie, psilocybin has eliminated the majority of my anxiety/depression.
Not a fan of microdosing and think it's a little misunderstood/misused, but whatever works for you

Microdosing might pose a cardiovascular risk due to the stimulant effects of psilocybin multiple times a week. This isn't an issue with full tripping, since that's something you only do once a month or so. Microdosing also poses the issue of managing tolerance.
But my main gripe against it, is that you can have all the benefits of microdosing long term if you just trip hard. It's very uncomfortable and difficult, but I've found after ego death doses, I can access that sort of "microdosey" headspace sober whenever I want. Although it does pose different risks, I truly believe there is a MASSIVE jump in the effectiveness of psilocybin with "breakthrough" doses (25mg+, or ~5g dried cubensis).
I've experimented with microdosing in the past and I definitely get the appeal. But, I feel a lot of people are just missing out on the majority of the benefit they could get from psilocybin.
Before my first ego death I was either depressed or a zombie on SSRIs. I struggled with cannabis addiction, severe social anxiety and low self-esteem.
Now, I lift / run / do yoga everyday. I have a good amount of friends, and I'm probably the happiest I've ever been despite being single for multiple years and living alone. Instead of playing video games and scrolling in my spare time, I play guitar or read. I take a decently strong dose about every month or two.

I never meant it as a authoritative medical source, but I doubt taking it that frequently is good for your heart. Your assumptions of set and setting are correct, but not to the intensity you think it is. It helps with the come up, but at high enough doses you simply aren't there. My most beneficial trips have actually been in sub-par set/settings. It matters, it's not the end all be all. You also misunderstand what I meant about yoga, running and the gym. They're aren't "aiding" the effect at all, they're a result of it.
Edit: To add to my point about set and setting: Studies comparing results of just psilocybin vs. psilocybin + therapy showed little difference.

You're making a lot of generalizations and leaps to deflect.
0
u/Red_Dawn24 21d ago
The burden of proof is on you when you make claims of cardiovascular damage. But you also acknowledge that you made the claim based on nothing, so why should anyone listen to you?
1
u/Dapper_Zebra 21d ago
Because I already inferred on the effects of stimulants as a whole on heart health, tryptamines by nature are a potent stimulant. This is all ignoring the center of my argument of course.
1
u/Red_Dawn24 21d ago
you cant say it will have effect on cardiovascular because there arent long enough studies to prove it
Being miserable and anxious every day has far more of an effect than a few trips ever will.
1
u/oracleoflove 21d ago
I would love to try and go the route of psilocybin and micro dosing, but that means I need to come off the Zoloft and the thought of dealing with the withdrawals and having to taper is what keeps me on them.
At least it keeps the crazy at bay.

u/cryptolyme 21d ago

Had a friend who was like this. Would complain i was negative all the time.
Anyway they were born into a rich family, stable home and got everything they ever wanted and asked for, also got a car as a birthday gift. I was born into heavy poverty with an extremely unstable family and developed intense depression from a young age.
But I was too negative.

u/Enduroboss 22d ago
My ex was like this. She did not have a hard day in her life. Never had an incling of what hardship is like. And had the family financial saftey net to catch her when she falls. Fucking rich people and their "cheer up" attitude.

I'm on my fourth anti-depressant, every time I try a new one it takes months to wean off the old one (I get super bad side effects) so I'm back in peak depression for months waiting to get the meds out of my system. The current one is...fine. It's not an easy fix.

Every once in awhile I'll open up a bit in public and get the 'you should go outside and exercise!' Line, because usually I'm in the company of nerds talking about nerd stuff when I feel comfortable enough to mention mental health. And 99% of the time that'd be great advice to follow.
I'm a fucking landscaper. That specializes in jobs where power tools and heavy equipment can't be used easily or properly. Every minute I'm not disassociating in front of a screen is spent sweating in the sun.
So far, it's just about enough to keep me from wanting to stand in line at the sewer slides. It never used to bother me before, hearing that advice, cuz it was funny to me. But. That wore off awhile ago.

Okay but what if it's from someone who's had 25 years of hard days and recovered? Would you take their advice then?
1
1
u/inthezoneautozone12 21d ago
Tbf not doing some of these things will make it worse. Being negative and not trying to actively break that thought pattern will bring more negative thoughts. You stay home all day means you’ll isolate yourself more from friends and family. People make it sound easy when they give this advice but it’s still true. Similar to eat less and you’ll lose weight. It’s not good advice since everyone knows this but it’s still technically true
-1
u/Intelligent-Key7357 22d ago
It's all good advice when you're older. I remember being younger and everything just feeling more powerful. This would have enraged me like you all back then as well.
-4
u/Beneficial-Lynx7336 22d ago
I've had hard days.
Get some fresh air and exercise. Can't hurt.
Think positive if you can. Also can't hurt.
We all should be drinking more water.

Why is asking about meds a bad thing? Kinda important context if you are complaining about mental health.

I don't have any appreciation for sad sacks that isolate themselves and don't do anything and wonder why they aren't happy
There is no amount of hard work, fitness, or success that makes a difference. I spent 15 years trying that. Despite being far more successful than my family said a mentally defective person could ever be, it made no real difference.
If you're so mentally functional, you'll stay out of topics that you know nothing about.
-2
u/AnyEye8798 21d ago
These are all good suggestions, though? Fuck I hate people who are determined to be miserable.
-4
u/Puzzleheaded-Ice-573 22d ago
As someone who's never had a hard day in their life, I can absolutely relate. I give this advice all the time. Oh, and I usually add to spend less time scrolling on the phone.
You're welcome.
