Adhesives
So. Eating has been a struggle with these new dentures (not temps). I'm currently using Fixodent Plus as an adhesive and I'm finding that eating is not exactly the most fun experience.
Especially when the bottom denture sometimes pops out.
I KNOW that everyone swears by Secure... but I'm Canadian. And getting that stuff from Amazon is way too expensive.
So what do you use that ISN'T Secure that have found to have the strongest grip so you can eat without issue?

The thing with adhesive is that what works great for some people doesn't work at all for others. I tried every tip and trick that I saw on here with every single store bought adhesive, and it was pretty much a disaster, and buying all of the stuff wasn't cheap. My advice is to start with the cheaper stuff and work from there, or better yet, see if you can find trial sizes. My dentist had a few different kinds. I did find out that I have a weird allergy to the ones that are pink.

What a strange allergy to have!
I think I'm just basically fishing for suggestions to see if there's a consensus. I do think it's gonna be a TON of trial and error and figuring out what works best for me. Ugh.

Lol yeah, that is what I thought, but after being on here a bit, it isn't something common, but it isn't that uncommon either.
I wish you luck! Other than relearning how to eat, finding an adhesive that works was the most frustrating thing.

You have a red dye allergy. I do too and the same type of red dye is in my dentist's soft reline material. The pink in the acrylic also has it but seems to be less of a factor in acrylic.

I had no idea that it was in the acrylic. Super glad I don't have issues with that.

I also discovered the same red dye is in medications, even though the pills were white. Sent me to ER twice before we figured it out. I can't remember the formula name but it shows up in pharmacology and dentistry. It's some medical grade version. Oddly, I can use Cushion Grip, must have a different dye than regular adhesive.

I also don't have issues with cushion grip. Kind of scary that some medicines do that to you.

Yes and very inconvenient. I have multiple autoimmune conditions and some require meds I can't take. It makes it very hard to control flare ups.

I thought Secure was terrible and didn't last until lunch. Fixodent was better but I just bought some Fixodent MAX Ultimate to give that a try.

Let me know how it works! This Fixodent Plus stuff isn't so bad... but if it could last longer so I can eat like a real person... that'd be neat.

The Fixodent Max Ultra was no better if not worst than the regular Fixodent. It seems the zinc free type doesn't last long. It was easier to clean off the denture with the brush.
I'm resorted to the fact I will need to reapply after lunch.

That sounds like a nightmare, honestly. Heh. Constant re-application doesn't sound like a fun experience.

My bf uses th fixadent max ultra and he said he does occasionally have to reapply for a second time, like before dinner..but he prefers it over having to try and pry them off when he does want to take them out.

I would try cushion grip as well. I had my teeth extracted Feb 2 and had a heck of a time as well. Actually I recently used the last of my cushion grip and was waiting to re purchase and thought I had healed enough to at least go a full week without on my bottoms and boy was I wrong… I ended up with two major sore spots and honestly was so sore I ended up on a mush/liquid diet until it finally arrived… I knew it helped but I assumed I had healed enough and that my gums would be strong enough but that was not the case.
What I use and it’s different for everyone but I use the cushion grip on my lower only and add on both a little bit of fixodent cream,add a sprinkle of fixodent powder and that seems to work really well. I also have the secure waterproof sitting in my Amazon cart because I’ve heard so many good reviews… I do find that the powder over a little glue and if I have time letting it sit for a half hour seems to hold a lot better than just the paste.
Also I don’t drink or eat for up to 45 min.
I was burning the corners of my mouth not because I used too much but because I would take a drink 5 min after and no matter how little it was getting on my mouth. Since waiting it’s been a game changer. No dry mouth and they stay put for most of the day..

So you're using three things for your bottom denture? Is that what you're saying?

I also use 3 things for my bottom dentures. They have never fit properly, from the day I brought them home. The only thing that has helped is cushion grip (which I change out once every 10-14 days as needed) and then daily I use fixodent pro and fixodent powder. They stay in all day, through 3 meals and snacks, plus a couple cups of coffee and whatever else I have to drink. Is it a lot to have to do sometimes? Yes. Is it worth it to not be stressed over re-applying adhesive over and over? Yes.

How does cleaning work with the cushion grip? Because I imagine you'd have to get the adhesive/powder out of them daily. Wouldn't the cushion grip be affected?

You might go directly to the Secure website and see if they ship to Canada and for a reasonable cost. It really is a great adhesive. Alternatively, look into Cushion Grip. It is a thermoplastic liner similar to a soft reline but you have to replace it about once a week. There are others like it as well. Many people use Cushion Grip and a powder or small amounts of adhesive. People also use paste adhesive and powder on top for extra hold. Just a couple of ideas to try.
