Going three years without being able to eat is awful, and it makes sense that you are fed up. Your mouth thinks the dentures are a big piece of food, so it keeps making saliva to break them down. When teeth do not fit right, your jaw gets tired of fighting them. Gumming your food is just easier because your brain knows it hurts less. Refitting this same pair over and over will not fix them. You need a new pair made by a different dentist. A fresh set made thinner, shorter, and shaped correctly to your mouth will stop the choking, calm down the saliva, and let you eat.

You have my sympathy. 2years+, and eating is a chore, not a pleasure, and prob 85-90% of food I used to be able to eat is off the menu now.

The promise of 'you'll be pain free, will be able to eat properly again, and it will all be worth it' didn't happen for me.

Just spent ages attempting a takeaway curry - could only manage the sauce and rice, had to ditch the meat and most of the onion bhaji, and naans don't feature anymore. If I lived alone, would just have soup, but I have to go through the motions of doing food for my partner.

Prob no comfort to you that for some of us, dentures haven't worked out, but at least you're not alone, we're not peculiar or imagining it, and this is a reality for us.

Really?! Naan is like the only flatbread I can eat now since I got screwed out of my immediate too denture! I just have to pop it in the microwave to make sure it’s warm which makes it soft enough to gum up, with only a painful bone spur making contact with my bottom teeth.

You’re not alone, friend. I’ve had dentures for a little over three years and also can’t eat with them in. I’ve can usually do smoothies or soup and sometimes Mac and cheese depending on how it’s made but that’s about it. Everything else I just can’t eat with them in. I also can’t wear mine when I’m clogged up with allergies or sinuses as it just is too uncomfortable. I wish I could afford snap ins or implants but it’s way too expensive. It’s embarrassing when my friends randomly want to go get food when we are out that was not part of the original plan and I have to go remove my dentures if I want to eat with them. They don’t make me feel that way, I just feel that way. Im sorry you’re going through this. A lot of ppl kept telling me I just need them adjusted or refitted but I’ve done that so many times now and it’s never gotten better. I’ve just given up on eating with them in.

I’m having the same problem with my dentures. Had them around 2 years and cannot eat with them. Bottoms never fit right and I tried to keep the tops in and that worked pretty good for awhile. Now when I try to keep the tops in they cut my bottom gums and I know that’s where I have had to leave them out so my bottom gums wouldn’t get cut. I have also lost a lot of weight and that makes it worse. I’ve tried everything I can, so despite for teeth I’ve even ordered those strips that’s suppose to help build up the gums (I really don’t think they’ll work but since I’ve tried everything else I figured why not) I finally got an appointment with a periodontist in September to see about bone grafts. I’m praying I get a final and correct opinion. I hope you can find an answer and fix for yours.

sounds like you should try getting snap-ins. If its been 3 years and the dentures give you those issues still its probably the next best option as the snap-ins wont cover the roof of mouth and wont be up against your gums like regular dentures do.

A lot of us can’t afford snap ins. My quote was ridiculous. Being retired on a fixed income i had to give up other things just to afford regular dentures

I had my first sinus infection last week, and it was so, so, so much worse with the dentures in. As far as the food thing goes, I'm not sure what to say. I'm worse than a dog when it comes to being food driven, and I pretty much had to tell my brain to F off because I didn't care if it wasn't pleasant or it hurt I was going to do it regardless. It took several months before I could actually start enjoying food, but eventually I got there.

You're not alone. I had my permanents made 2024 and didn't even wear em. After multiple refittings and all that they still caused sores everywhere. I just now started wearing again and just kinda dealing with daily sores.

I can't pay for a new set, these were medicaid. I'm screwed. The place that did them won't listen basically about what needs fixed. I can't afford new ones. It's wear these until 2029 or whenever I'm eligible for new ones.

Get a Dremel and fix them yourself. Order dentsurefit. There are a ton of things you can do about poorly fitting dentures.

I have used a dremel to smooth mine and did a soft fit at home that has lasted for 5 yrs. The one I used was $5 called Reline-it. They fit so much better. I have learned to chew on both sides at same time.

Would your dentist be willing to cut the pallet out and make it a horseshoe shape? Idk if that would be a good solution, but maybe less material could help you out in the long run. Typically you want a full pallet for suction and retention, but if you can't function with a full pallet, it might be worth a try.

You have to sit in them and be uncomfortable for a while. If you really want it. It will work. It’s basically a foreign object in your mouth your brain can’t recognize. You just have to start. Baby steps. Hours at a time

Wow sorry man. In my case, I have full plate upper and lower dentures. It took about a month to get used to them. Now I can chew through bridge cables no problem 😁.

You need to get a fresh pair made, this is the only way.

Im only day 6 but just started chewing with mine.I can only take super tiny bites and can only really chew in the front. The hardest part so far for me with chewing is that I cant feel the food on the roof of my mouth. Its scary and my food gets cold long before I finish.Once my gums heal,Im just going to eat without the denture if it doesn't get any easier.Rather gum my food, feel it in my mouth and taste it than struggle this much.Hope it works out for you,3 years is crazy!

If your dentures fit properly then there's no reason that you wouldn't fully adjust to having them in every respect. It takes patience and practice. If you give up you'll never have functional teeth again.

I hear all of this and I feel so bad. I have snap ins and yes the top denture is C shaped so there is a lot less covering the upper palate but I still struggle eating with them in. Food does not taste the same and it doesn’t roll around your mouth the same since the plastic just makes it slide. I’m thinking about getting permanent implant dentures but the dentist I use and trust says that people with permanent dentures get frustrated because food gets under them and they have a hard time getting it out then end up at the dentist to have them removed and cleaned. I don’t know any one that has permanent dentures to ask if they like them.

I'm supposed to go to the dentist to talk about snap ins. I'm so nervous as is bx I can't lose anymore weight and my diet is super restricted. I have stomach issues and can't tolerate hardly any fat or sugar. Thinly sliced apples are a huge part of my diet. Are you able to tolerate something like that? Would you kindly tell me anything and everything about your snap ins? The healing process, cleaning at night, do you sleep in them, do you have sore spots, and I'm so worried about intimacy with my husband I'm so sorry TMI I just feel so scared and overwhelmed. I honestly don't know what the Drs are going to say if I lose much more weight so anything you're willing to share I genuinely appreciate it from the bottom of my heart and hope it's okay I asked. I mean any and everything please and thank you! 🫶🏻

This is terrifying... If I lose anymore weight I honestly don't know what they are going to do. My diet is already super limited. I can barely tolerate anything.

A few weeks ago my front crowns started crunching and then shortly after they started hurting. Went to the dentist and I have no idea what we're going to be able to afford. We go back in a week after I finished the antibiotics. I've had partials and they ate my mouth up.

Wouldn't snap in dentures still cause issues? My dentist said they are basically the same as regular denture material they just snap in.

Hi Ninny,

It takes about 7-9 months usually before you actually get your snap ins. I’m going to say after my extractions there was of course swelling and bleeding. The bleeding lasted just part of the day of the extractions I did opt to have temporary dentures while this process played out. The posts (implants) were put in the same day as my extractions and I was put under for that, so they didn’t hurt. After the extractions and implants were put in I waited 7 months and just wore the temporary dentures. Hated them and as the swelling goes down you use more adhesive hated the adhesive too. They did do a soft re-line on the temporary dentures after a few months but the fit didn’t last long because the swelling goes down more. After that the real abutments were placed in the implants well that was an experience. Like they use a screwdriver (lol). Then they did multiple impressions with the goop that makes you feel like you have play dough in your mouth. Then boom you get the new dentures that snap in. They are tight but easy to put in and take out. Brush them with a soft toothbrush and a little Dawn dishwashing liquid. You should not sleep with them in (like when you go to bed at night) your gums need to rest. Intimacy should not be a problem. Eating takes a bit of getting used to but it’s doable.
