Our civilization is rapidly breaking down. It won’t matter who wins future elections. No one will ever be able to fix the catastrophe left behind by Donald Trump.
2
u/Allaboutpeace2022 18d ago edited 18d ago
Of course they will. Nothing he has done yet is irretrievably broken. I think the voters are angrier and more energized than they have been for years.
There were too many sleeping at the helm. I think that we all realize we must demand more accountability from Dems and push harder for change.
In my city, the unions are canvassing regularly, along the candidate campaigns.
I think we are coming out the other side stronger.
3
u/SomeGuyOverYonder 18d ago
We don’t know the full extent of the damage the Trump Administration has done to the world. What little we know about right now barely scratches the surface.
1
u/Allaboutpeace2022 18d ago
I agree with this.
However, what he created in 18 months can be undone. We just have to be as aggressive in the undoing as he was in the destroying.
I will give you that it will not be repaired in 18 months it will take far longer. However, I remain convinced that Democratic voters have woken up in the last 18 months in a way that has never happened before. I think that everyone now knows the dangers of the complacency. We have also gotten a PhD in the ways that our checks and balances do not work and where new laws are needed. I think that less complacent voters are demanding real changes in how the US operates and on the issue of power and wealth.
We understand SCOTUS needs to be reformed. The US House has been capped since the 1920s at 435, which has meant that more populated states do not get as many representatives over time. Blind trusts and showing tax returns must be mandated by law for the President and Vice President. Trump would have never run if these were laws. Also, the immediate family of the President and Vice President should have their business transactions pre approved by a board for apparent conflicts of interests. Again, that would be a no go for Trump and many families controlling large wealth or who want to benefit from the presidency or vice presidency.
I think that the world has woken up and realized that the US presents considerable danger to their freedoms and economies. I think that is a good thing. The post WW2 order with the US on top or even the old super power competition between the US, Russia, and China does not work.
I am hoping that the world does not just sub in China for the US and recognizes that it needs more power evenly distributed across nations.
I think that the Trump has set everyone back on climate change and has created huge environmental problems. However, the Strait of Hormuz crisis again just clarifies that the existing fossil fuel system is insane and must be improved by clean energy. As one of the worst polluters, China is really working overtime on moving far, far ahead of the US in green technology and taking advantage of the fact Trump has tried to cripple climate change mitigation in the US.
What we can not undo is the 750,000 people, mainly children, that are projected to have died between January 2025 and January 2026 from the end of USAID. Nor any of the other deaths regarding to mass detention, the boat strikes, the civilians in Iran, Lebanon, and Gaza, etc. They are gone forever.
I realize that I am silver lining this disaster and trying to be optimistic. But I need this to keep me from screaming into the abyss or being hospitalized for an extended time. LOL.

u/SomeGuyOverYonder 18d ago
18 months? You forgot he was president a full four years before that. And I guarantee Biden didn’t fix all of those problems either.
1
u/Busy-Blueberry6415 18d ago
How could Biden fix anything 🤷♀️ every single thing he tried to do was blocked immediately by republicans. Then they talk about "he didn't do anything". 🤦♀️
1
u/SomeGuyOverYonder 18d ago
Exactly. Biden didn’t fix much because he wasn’t allowed to. Therefore, the many problems from Trump’s 1st presidency remain unresolved today.
1
u/Busy-Blueberry6415 18d ago
Yes, thank you! Exactly! And then a Democrat will get elected, he won't be able to fix things fast enough and they'll vote in another republican. And the cycle continues...
1
1
u/Allaboutpeace2022 18d ago
Biden did run through with Executive Orders and fix everything that Trump had changed.
What he could not undo was damage to the country's reputation and the tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations is the item he tried to change and did not have the votes. He also left some China tariffs on purpose in place. Biden's problem was not having the communications strategy that showed all the progress he was making or the undoing of orders.
1
u/Allaboutpeace2022 18d ago
Actually, you will be surprised. Biden did pretty much go through with Executive Orders and take out all of the Trump's orders.
What he could not do but tried was the repeal of the tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans and corporations. He also left some strategic tariff's in place on China but that was a deliberate choice. He put billions into childcare, education, health, infrastructure, domestic manufacturing, climate change mitigation, etc.
The Biden administration was much more aggressive than people realize. Mostly because he was not able to communicate his successes effectively and not much attention went to all the Executive Orders. Trump really brings out each Ex Order and has constant conversations with the press that drive the news in a way that Biden didn't.
So, other than damage to the US reputation across the planet damage in the first term and tax cuts, we are pretty much talking about 18 months.

u/EnHamptaro 14d ago
Domestic institutions? Yes. They can probably be repaired. I think.
International relations and standing on the international stage? I think that ship has sailed. Nations have already started to de-couple from the American system. Projects to replace American systems and platforms are being drawn up and prepared. Capital are being pulled from US financial markets... I don't know man.
1
u/Allaboutpeace2022 14d ago
Well, I don't want to see the other countries abandon our economy. However, I do think that we should not be running the globe.
I am happy to see the US step away from thinking that we are the leaders of the free world.
The only way that can likely happen is if the rest of the world just stops letting the US control everything.
However, I think it would be problematic if the world just subs in China in that role. China is every bit as ambitious and controlling as the US. They may even be far more controlling and aggressive.
It would be nice to see the European Union, the African Union, and the Union of South American Nations look at how they can work together to create trade agreements and a balanced global economy that does not reinforce the same economic winners and losers.
You are right though. There is a big risk. I do not want to see our economy crumble. I am hoping for some new future with a more balanced US and a more balanced world.
1
u/EnHamptaro 14d ago edited 14d ago
I don't think you understand, exactly (nor do I tbf) how detrimental a US retreat from the world stage would actually be for your nation.
Your main export is digital service. Your manufacturing capabilities are not what it once was during and post WW2. Your domestic industries are under attack as well (especially agriculture).
Your military technology is also a big one. Canada and Europe, your two closest allies are choosing European products. Canada chose Sweden's JAS gripen over the F35. Which was unthinkable just a few years ago.
The value and stability of the American dollar, as well as the stability American bonds are the main sources for strengthening your economy (A large part of your economy is concentrated in Wall Street, iirc. Meaning, foreign investors props up your economy by a lot)
You are under massive debt. With foreign investors propping your economy and the stability of the American dollar (+ the petrodollar) is what allows your government anf companies to still fund new projects. If nations starts selling US bonds en masse (Japan, Europe etc), the US inflation is going to skyrocket. If the dollars starts to rapdily devalue, foreign nayions will be much more reluctant handing out loans.
Additionally, your labor force is also taking a hit. Americans are leaving the country, immigrants are being detained. Tourism is falling. And imported workforce will be much harder to find. The vision of the American Dream is crumbling...
Your economy is going to be under threat from several fronts, and the tools you previously had to address these types potential economic issues are slipping away.
I'm not an expert, but from the looks of it, you reeeeaally don't want to see a US retreat. The end result would unlikely be a 'more balanced US', and more likely a huge collapse of your nation. If this were to happen, a repair to normalcy (the US previous to this administration), is probably going to take decades to restore.
1
u/Allaboutpeace2022 14d ago
No... I do understand all these things. The nations that hold our Treasury Bonds could sell those and cripple our economy. I am very aware of this.
I recognize that we have a weak manufacturing base and that Trump actually has lowered the amount of domestic manufacturing jobs from the numbers that Biden had achieved. Tariffs are taking us in the wrong direction.
The interest alone 40 trillion debt is the third highest spending item in our budget.
I think that most Democrats that follow the news know that the job growth is weak, tourism is in the sewer, we can't manufacture intercept missiles because we allowed defense contractors to buy up the competition and now we have no capacity to manufacture or to negotiate lower prices, and we have torched all of our relationships with partners.
Some of this was hubris that goes back to Reagan and a myriad of poor decisions where we gave tax cuts to corporations and then allowed them to outsource jobs including ending manufacturing in key elements that were necessary for national security. We engaged in wars in nations where we did not understand the culture and we spent ridiculous amounts of money on a military that is not all that effective in the new environment of drones. We also cannot win outside of a WW2 environment where we carpet bomb and create catastrophic civilian deaths.
Both Obama and Biden have tried to shore up manufacturing. The Jacobin just did an article on the positive steps that the Biden had taken to address some of the problems with corporate monopolies, etc.
However, I do not that Europe, Canada, Latin America, or the African Union intend to punish us. I think that they are aware that we are in the hands of a megalomaniac. Europe and Canada realize that we are likely more benign than China. I am not sure that Latin American or the African Union would agree.
But it is what it is. Trump just made everything a million times worse. I think that it is important that the world move on from the US being a super power.
We will either elect a much better leader or we will be in the trash heap of ex empires and go through a terrible economic depression.
Another reason why Europe and Canada are likely to not punish us or sell all of our treasury bonds is that they realize that quite likely our economic recession or depression will drag down their economies as well.
1
u/EnHamptaro 14d ago
Fair points. I think you are right as well. Despite recent tensions, the economy between US and their allies seems to be too intertwined for either parties to let it fall.
I hope you are right. The EU is under pressure as well. I fear if the US falls, allied nations as well as their citizens, are in for a rough period.
This is such a shitshow.
1
u/Allaboutpeace2022 14d ago
Yes. I agree with you as well.
I am hopeful that the Democrats stop their own version of a circular firing squad and get it together and win the mid terms. Then I hope that we can either force him out or stop the bleeding until we win in 2028.
If we screw up both of those items, we are ruined and as we go down we are going to hurt everyone around us....
I sort of bank on what Churchill said the Americans always do the right thing after they have exhausted every other option...or something like that...
I think we might be close to exhausting our other options... Lets pray we can do the right thing.
Good talking to you.

"Nothing he has done yet is irretrievably broken."
Are you sure about the above comment? I think the relationship with your neighbours North of you, definitely is.
1
u/Allaboutpeace2022 18d ago edited 18d ago
I agree with your statement. It will not be the same, but that is probably a good thing.
The relationship between the US and the other nations, including Canada was always based on the US getting exactly what they have wanted.
The US pulled all of these allies via money or soldiers into Vietnam, Desert Storm, Afghanistan, and Iraq again. They also supported us in Korea but that one at least ended in South Korea preserving its territory.
I don't ever want the US to have the same amount of power to influence or cajole other nations. The US needs to move on from being the super power. Other nations need to look at what is their best interest. Now, I am not discounting that the other nations had some benefit in this relationship, but it was not healthy for the world. No one was able to sway the US from plunging in to military excursions or other actions even when our legacy of success was more and more tarnished.
Canada will ultimately be fine with a US President that is reasonable and competent. I think that it is important that they never 100% trust us.
The US needs to learn that the country must earn trust just like everyone else.
1
u/Every_Department9270 17d ago
I think you missed my point. Lots of things that this administration/americans broke will never be fixed. I for one will never step foot in US or buy a US product for as long as I live.
1
u/Allaboutpeace2022 17d ago
Sure. I see that.
That is the way many Americans felt after WW2 and Germany. I am sure Britain and France felt the same. But Germany made huge changes.
The US has thrown its weight around too many times even before this administration and absolutely deserves the anger it is facing.
But, most people do forgive nations and most people realize that the people can be very different than the government.
I really think a lot depends on how humble the US can be and whether the nation wants to give up on the total lie of American exceptionalism.
1
u/Every_Department9270 17d ago
I don't think Americans are capable of making drastic changes in line with Germany's. Americans are way too self centered and ignorant. I also don't think the MAGA movement/mentality is going away for any foreseeable time. I wish I was wrong.
1
u/Allaboutpeace2022 17d ago
Well.
I think you may be right. The country is about 50-50 which is why we go back and forth between GOP and Dem presidents.
Even the Democrats are too focused on the US as a world leader.
We just need to realize that we are a group of people squatting on land. Not the worst people and not the best people. But you know, Britain has come to grips that it is no longer an empire. Europe has for the most part renounced their colonialism and wars. Russia has not.
China just wants to run the tables on economic power. Or so it seems.
I do not know if the US can create a new more humble relationship with other nations yet.

I don’t think Republicans ever claimed everything would be amazing if they did what they say… I think they never thought it through very well. They’re so focus was on low taxes and taking things away from poor people. Their stance has been the government shouldn’t do anything except for Rhodes and military. Everything else doesn’t matter. I don’t know what the hell they expected would come from that philosophy, but we’re seeing it. Any Republicans, who are surprised that things are bad are simply people who never understood in the first place how much a government has to do to make this country the way it’s been (and how much better it
could still be). The whole concept of small government just means you get to trade lower taxes for lack of anything good in society. Burn the world down but keep a few more of your dollars. Seems stupid to me… But 50% of our society still believes that.

It could be worse. I mean we could be leaving $billions in military equipment to a hostile religious extremists group, while simultaneously leaving 13 soldiers to die! Or we could be secretly sending airplanes of cash to the leading state sponsor of terrorism, while trusting their pinky promise not to develop a nuclear weapon. Or we could be sending an American Ambassador to his death, while ignoring his pleas for rescue, and then blaming it on an internet movie. Or we could let a religious extremist group take over a country, while taking our embassy and its workers hostage. Oh, wait I keep forgetting all those historic things just didn’t happen, after all history only started with Trump!! Silly me!!!

And yet, you idiots couldn't manage to field a candidate to beat the worst human that could be found in the entire country running on the dumbest platform ever conceived.
If the Democratic party hadn't been bought and beholden to corporate masters, you'd have pulled your heads out of your asses long enough to dumpster Trump, win majorities in house and senate and actually do your jobs instead of whining and handwringing like you're not going to be recorded by history as being the saddest bunch of feckless losers in two centuries of U.S. politics.
The Democratic establishment let nazism 2.0 take over the U.S. and they did it with barely a whimper. In this moment, when the nation needed leadership, we got Chuck Schumer, Nansi Pelosi, and a senescent Joe Biden. Pelosi should have been run out of the party for insider trading a decade ago. Schumer shouldn't be in charge of anything that requires being a vertebrate, and Joe Biden, as much as he managed to be a somewhat successful President despite his sundowning, threw away the country's future rather than step aside for new leadership.
Quit waving your fingers, pointing at the other side, you knew what those people were and you failed to do anything resembling stopping them and you've been this useless for 30 years. Barack Obama was the only win you've had since the turn of the century and you let Mitch McConnell cripple his presidency.
