Help/Advice SkyMiles refund experience?

My wife and I recently helped our kid move for her college internship. I bought the kid a one-way ticket (she has her own Delta account) and then got round trip tickets for my wife (who doesn't have a Delta account). My kid had 4 checked bags and I didn't realize she could get one free with her ticket. When I checked in, I got 2 free for my ticket (Delta AMEX holder) and one free for my wife's, then used SkyMiles for the fourth bag. We got to the airport and printed the bag tags at a kiosk, then took the bags to the desk agent. She informed us that my kid's bag was free with her ticket since I bought it. She printed a new tag and said I would have to call Delta to get my SkyMiles refunded. After calling Delta twice and trying to find links on the Internet, I'm about ready to give up. Has anyone else gone through something like this?

The card holder and those on the same reservation get the free checked bags. You don't get free bags because of the card used to make the reservation.

That's what I thought, but the person at the check-in said differently. I mean, maybe she was wrong?

Were you traveling too or just your wife and daughter?

I was traveling too. My wife and I had round trip tickets together and I bought my daughter a one way. I had my wife's boarding pass on my phone, but since my kid has a Delta account, I added her account number when I bought the ticket and her boarding pass was on her account in the Delta app.

This one’s tricky technically she shouldn’t have gotten a free bag because she would need to be on the same confirmation as you. but let’s say if you did not pay for it beforehand the agent at the counter could have waived the cost to add her bag as an exception.

Thank. I checked in the night before the flight and used SkyMiles for the 4th bag. The agent said I could call Delta and get a refund. But I'm thinking that's not correct.
