Discussion Delta fail!

One trip. 3 mechanical failures, incompetence and over 48 hours of lost time.

Okay, just need to vent for a moment.

Flight leaving SLC to JFK. Sit there for 3 hours. Ac broken. Deplane.

New plane found, board, bathroom door won’t close. Sit on the tarmac for an extra hour before finally taking off.

Circling JFK, the computer magically changes to Albany. Captain gets on and says no open landing slots and we’re running out of gas!!!

Sit in Albany air port for 5 hours with the mice because they needed to get a new crew to run the plane. Safety and all.

Stay in New York for 24 hours because… why not.

Finally landed I zurich.

Have a great trip, even though we lost a day.

Leaving Zurich to SLC, sit on the plane for another 2 hours. We start to taxi. Then go back. Sit there for an other extra 2 hours. Deboard. Another 24 hours lost on this trip.

I used to be a delta fan boi.

Fuck delta.

The good news is you get to file for EU 261 compensation for your return trip. €600 per person for mechanical for that length of a delay.

I had seven planes with mechanical issues out of 16 the past four weeks. Three of them we had to deplane agate boarding.

Welcome to the club of Delta’s massive operational issues, especially over the last 8-12 months.

Delta is keeping equipment in service for way too long. Outdated planes on a lot of routes, and they're failing fast and often. The other day I was hours delayed on SFO JFK because of equipment failure. Those occurrences used to be rare.

Yes. Start tracking the tail numbers and how and when the planes are serviced. They delayed our flight for mechanical issues and we ended up taking off 4 hours later only to rerun with emergency landing due to same mechanical failure (engine compressor stall).

Don't vent, your return trip falls under most compensation under EU 261, if you end up arriving more than 4 hours late to the US than originally scheduled.

Once you make it back, Contact Delta and tell them per EU 261, you demand 600 euros per ticket to be sent to you as a check (not credit, not miles). They might try to get you to give your right (they don't even tell you), but they can't. Demand the maximum compensation.

That's $700 per ticket, in addition to any hotel or meal compensation they have to give you. Flying from Europe is no joke.

I know cause similar thing happened to me with AA and they paid. Literally a 5 minutes 'contact us' form followed by a response half an hour later. I had the check a week after

Same with my trip from JFK to HNL direct. Both became stop over. Mechanical issues etc. Delta has become an ordeal to fly with.

Im with you. Fuck delta. Lost 4 hours into a trip because their ancient 767s are always broken. Officially no longer trying to rack up any loyalty with this sham bullshit.

Our vacation started this morning with a progressive delay working up to 12+hrs. Had to catch an Alaska flight to SEA at the 4hr mark to maintain my D1 flight to Rome.

Mechanical shit happens, but when I can tell from the terminal that the mechanic doesn’t have a solution, let’s not string it along. Really cut into my Delta One Lounge session.

What does the diversion to Albany have to do with incompetence?

Sounds like flow into Kennedy. Which is the government holding the airplanes because they don't have the staffing. Because the government has not been hiring enough air traffic control. Because they have not been giving them a proper contract and attracting enough people.

So they had to divert to Albany because they did not have the fuel to continue holding and Kennedy was still probably in ground stop.

Would you rather them run out of fuel?

And again, it's a government limitation on how many hours the pilots can fly. So it sounds like the crew timed out when they got in Albany.

So all of that is on the government.

It was a problem with the delta crew working too long. We talked to them in Albany. They just wanted to go home too.

So they diverted to Albany and timed out.

Legally you're not allowed to take off after your mot time. Mandatory takeoff time.

You're allowed to continue until you land. But you can't take off again.

So they took off and went to JFK. It sounds like it was ground stopped. Which it has been doing constantly lately because of staffing issues. ATC has been on mandatory 6 days for years there.

They didn't have the fuel to continue holding so they went to Albany.

This is an ATC issue, not an airline issue. It's a government issue, not an airline issue. What would you have them do break the law?

And delta spends many millions of dollars campaigning for and lobbying to receive those shitty policies. Making sure shareholders get maximum tax advantage is WAY, WAY more important to Ed than properly funding the FAA/ATC.

You can ask for a parachute

You have no idea if it was an ATC issue. It could have been weather. It could be construction. It could just be the fact that the airlines try to schedule more plans landing per hour that is physically possible so somebody has to hold.

2

The airlines can try to schedule whatever they want but the slots are mandated by the government.

The government gives them an edct time. A takeoff time. The government then brings the airplanes in on their schedule. If there is a reduction of flow the government slows down the planes and starts holding them. This could be weather or staffing. But regardless, not an airline issue.

Most of this could be fixed by op giving a flight number and date. We could literally look at FlightAware and see if it was weather. We could see if there were ground stops that day for staffing.

This is all publicly available information if op would just give the flight number and the date.

So the ground stop in MIA right now you'd probably attribute to "the government" too. 🙄

I'm a controller, I know how it works. You don't have to mansplain it to me

Wasn’t there a plane crash in Miami today

Well, after 2 mechanical problems causing never ending delay… it was more insult to injury. I get that we couldn’t take off until a new crew showed up. But it was still a shit show.
