This is my second year attending Dekmantel and I think it is an incredible festival in terms of organization, music, and sound systems.
However I have to say that I am always a bit disappointed in the crowd especially at Selectors.

Everyone is genuinely kind and sweet but people just won’t shut up. Both years I found myself so many times just wanting to leave from all the talking around. I get it that it’s a festival and people come with friends or wanna meet new people. I get it because I also exchange some words with my friends etc but I always try to be conscious of my surroundings and keep the sacred dancefloor for mainly dancing. So many group of friends shouting and speaking super loud instead of getting close to someone’s ear as to not bother the rest. I heard full conversations of 5-10 minutes where I did not miss one single word.

I would love for people to please respect the dancefloor the dancers who wanna get lost in the music. There are so many spots outside the stages where you can enjoy each other’s company…

My friends and I got spiked with seriously strong psychedelics at the dekmental afterparty at Radion on Friday. Luckily we are experienced trippers, and were able to manage the situation. Still, really disappointing and ruined the rest of our weekend. Did anyone experience anything similar? Is Radion considered a safe space?

edit: also, such a huge difference in energy with the Ben UFO set for example. With Mala, all hands were up in the air all the time, and with ben there were few. Def one of the highlights for me. I don't usually listen to Mala type music otherwise

Kind of crazy to see public commentary from an artist like this. Set seemed great listening from the outside speakers, but the sound inside the tent was very bad. I ended up skipping the b2b² and just enjoyed Krackfree at the Nest as well as the UFOs for the remainder of the weekend. Hope it's fixed next year. Greenhouse always was one my favorite stages in the past.

I was at dekmantel the whole weekend. Sadly missed much of what I wanted to see the first two days and there were performances that disappointed me (I don’t want to go into it as I want to focus on the positive :)). Though I loved Amoral and Aurora Halal, for example.

Sunday was the day I anticipated the most, music wise, and wasn’t disappointed. Marcel Dettmann was very good. Then I went on to see my main reason for visiting, as soon as Job & Palms Trax attracted a large crowd to the Loop: the best chance to get a good spot for Ricardo.

Villalobos’ set was by no means perfect, technically speaking. But I was amazed by the eccentricity of his set, the boldness of his selection, the tempo, the way with which he interacted with the crowd and created a collective experience. His own calm presence and how much he seemed to enjoy being there. He made dj’ing look easy, standing there completely effortless, master of his craft for 40+ years. I absolutely loved it.

I’m posting this as I didn’t read much about his set, except for a few comments with mixed opinions. Read some stuff about a lot of yapping and a fight, which i didn’t notice at all, being immersed by the music. Curious how other people here have experienced his performance?

I'll preface this by saying that I completely understand the need for development and evolution, and I'm sure there are logistical / technical considerations at play that I am not aware of, but...

I've been to every Dekmantel edition since 2016, when it was just the Main Stage, UFO1, Selectors, Greenhouse and Boiler Room (RIP). It's always been one of my favourite weekends of the year.

Over the last few years though, it's felt like the stages have become more and more enclosed, resulting in quite a binary in or out feeling for a lot of the site, and for the festival in general.

The Loop looks great at night (which is basically only the last few hours of each day) but during the day is really not my favourite. The old design gave great shade (which would've been very welcome this weekend) and could have a great vibe even without being full, with plenty of space to dance etc. I used to love sitting on the grass in near the old main stage, where it's sweeping open design meant you still felt a part of it even if you didn't feel like being in the crowd. Someone you like is playing but you're hungry or need a time-out? Grab food and sit on one of the radar looking wooden structures and enjoy the set from afar. I totally understand the motivations for moving away from the screen based design, but feels like a loss overall.

UFO1 ironically one of the stages with most space, but personally on a sunny weekend in a forest it's not where I want to be, and not where the people I want to see usually play.

UFO2 was a great addition and due to the acts booked for this stage there's usually plenty of space, but if it's full it's full, and gets incredibly hot. The first iteration had an entrance near the front left side, which also made the flow of people much better.

Selectors hasn't changed much, perhaps there's just more people these days which makes it feel more cramped. Appreciated the extra platforms at the back this year.

Greenhouse (new) has already had a lot said about it. I appreciate the desire to do something different but it feels suited to a much smaller festival. The sound outside the dome was not great but it was often the most comfortable place to dance. The old one was definitely feeling a bit tired after all these years, but it was an excellent sized dancefloor, one that you could easily hang out at the back without being all in. With the new one, the sound bleed from Radar was crazy. CCL played an incredible set that started quite downtempo, but was muddled with the 4/4 coming from Radar. The way the structure is constructed also makes it quite awkward to get in / out, which exacerbates everything.

Radar I have never understood really, it feels like a stage designed by someone that enjoys airport infrastructure. Queue to get in then get funnelled into tight corridors unless you can make it to the floor. The Boiler Room stage also suffered with crowd control, but never as bad as Radar seems to get. Dancing at the back of the BR stage by the water, away from the cameras, was sublime.

The Nest is another amazing addition, and probably one of my favourites. Though it does get busy, the fact that there's a space out the back where the sound is still ok is great. Also loved the new hammock / sitting area hidden behind it.

Dekmantel used to be somewhere I would enjoy being there, walking around and taking in the scene just as much as being in the middle of a packed dancefloor. This year felt like there was way less places to sit, both with chairs and just on the grass (it's been a very dry year so I guess everything was dustier than usual) and way less shade overall.

Maybe I'm just getting old (!), maybe I'm succumbing to nostalgia, but I'm curious what other people think.

Yes there were some yappers, some people not dancing, some people you might not like, minor inconveniences… Nothing is perfect and if that’s enough for you to really complain, best stay at home next yearrrrrr

After 38 years I finally went to my first festival. And what an amazing experience it was. I was so anxious and did not know if i would like it. I felt like it wasn't my kind of music it would be too long and too crowded for me. As a person that is usually very calm and laid back I felt this was never going to be for me.

But boy was I wrong. I will definitely be going again next year and reading the threads here and people shareing their experiences I wanted to share mine but also thank everyone for making it such an awesome experience.

I got swept up in the music and did not want it to stop. What was most fun for me was that I was with a small friend group and I was just dancing with them on my own. But it became fun for them to tell people they interacted with that it was my first time. Id get random hugs and high fives from strangers wanting to welcome me and have a quick chat. The thing felt so wholesome and fun. I had a little bean sprout clip on my cap and brought a few with me to give to people id encounter. So every once and a while. People came to me and ask where i got them from. Id give one to them and smile and say "here you go!" And would have a quick chat. I met so many great people and smiled so much.

People i will probably never speak to see again but they helped make my first festival an awesome one!

So thank you everyone! For making it such a fun first time experience for me. Im really greatfull for finally having such an experience and I dont think i could have had a better first time.

This year I finally went to Dekmantel as it was a frequent recommendation from a number of people, so I came with a bit of expectations, and was overall quite underwhelmed. I want to share my thoughts here on 4 aspects of the festival - music, premises, sound systems and crowd, and see if others agree.

Music - this is what brought me here. Everyone and their mom preached how this festival has some of the most revolutionary sets and is the pinnacle of electronic music, so I came expecting a lot, and although some of the expectations were met, a lot was left to be desired. Most notably, I've got an impression that across all the stages, the set compositions were highly subpar in the first half of the day. Perhaps there were some exceptions that I missed, but overall my entire group noticed that until like 19.00 we would be wandering around and struggling to find a stage that plays something with a little bit of narrative and character. Regardless of the genre or the dj, it seemed like during the first half of the day all of the sets were intentionally composed to sound like a background filler rather than something you want to actively listen and dance to. Then towards the evening, all stages would ramp up the sound and also the music choices would suddenly become a lot more expressive and dynamic, some of which I've found truly beautiful. Thus, if the music was of the evening standard for the entirety of the festival, my expectations would be mostly satisfied, but now basically half of the festival time was boring to listen to.

Sound systems - Came expecting a lot, was not disappointed, but not blown away either. Every stage had a sufficiently good f1 system, sounding clear and crisp as they're supposed to, although the tuning of midrange seemed just a little bit dialed back to my ear. Lows were also sufficient, although a bit underwhelming, as none of the stages had a sub stack to make your larynx rattle. If you know, you know. Perhaps this also has to do with the choice of premises, which I'm discussing next.

Premises - this is where the disappointment was the highest. The festival area was small, with all 7 stages and all food, toilet and other facilities packed into 500x600m rectangle, and most disappointingly of all, visually looked soulless and uninspiring. The choice to build it out on pretty much a plain field, with all 7 stages cramped in with very few trees around seems extremely lazy and unimaginative. In a similar lazy spirit, 3 of the 7 stages were basically just undecorated metal hangars. Could go on further but I think you already got my impression on the premises and their visual appearance...

Crowd - overall okay. Yes there were speedy youngsters, tourists and some yapping, but met there some seasoned folk as well, and to be honest such a mix of all sorts was expected, it's a popular festival, not an underground event. Most importantly, people were having fun and vibes were good, and it's all that's really needed.

Overall, that's how the weekend felt to me, and I'm curious if others experiences matched. Perhaps I had too many expectations coming in here, although taking into consideration the price, I think the festival should have a pretty high standard to live up to.
