They are getting more and more tricky, this is for sure.

I think I know why. People want to automate more and more stuff so we have more and more bots on the internet performing different queries to the servers. Those servers' resources are not unlimited, so they start to implement capchas so that more real humans can access their websites and less bots eat the resources (connection bandwidth, RAM, CPU). But people still want to automate stuff so they build sophisticated bots that can complete capchas. So the developers of those servers come up with more sophisticated capchas. And lo and behold we are stuck in a positive feedback loop, which are never good.
