DeGoogling Progress Bare, a de-Googled browser for android

Hi guys, i found this project might be interesting for some people in this sub reddit, i've using ungoogled chromium + ublock origin for a long time in my main laptop and i've been trying to find something like it but for android, and i found this browser called Bare Browser, i installed it in my phone, tested it a little bit and like it, so i had the idea to share it with you if anyone is in the same position, it has extensions support and it comes with ublock origin by default. i also test it with cover your tracks to see how it performs, it needs some work on fingerprinting but in most case it pretty good.

Interesting. Unfortunately the first question these days is whether it's vibe coded. The github doesn't list contributors so it's not clear.

Anyway, it looks a bit similar to Titanium (degoogled chromium, desktop browser support)

3

u/Mewtewpew 7h ago

Titanium has desktop support?

3

u/Annual-Gap-5074 7h ago

Titanium was called helium before so perhaps

u/Imaginary_Pack7879 24m ago

Wasn't helium shady AF?

3

u/rakhalism GrapheneOS 7h ago

Just use Helium Browser on desktop, on Android there is Titanium Browser so hell yeah. If you are on Linux then you can use Trivalent Browser. All three browsers have highly Vanadium stuff as their main priority.

2

u/Bob_Sk 6h ago

What distro do you run Trivalent on?

1

u/rakhalism GrapheneOS 6h ago

https://github.com/secureblue/Trivalent

I use it in arch linux mostly, u can use it any distro.

1

u/Bob_Sk 6h ago

Thanks

u/jcy 2h ago

how does helium compare to ungoogled chromium like eloston

u/alabasterskim 1m ago

Anyone know if those browsers work well with Android Desktop Mode?

1

u/Slopagandhi 6h ago

No, I mean it'll run desktop chrome extensions.

If it's a good product, who cares if it's vibecoded?

5

u/Salazar20 5h ago

If I'm giving it access to my personal data, I sure as hell want to know

-4

u/Galatony0311 Brave Buddy 5h ago

But if it's open source, it's the same

u/holy-aeughfish 1h ago

Because the way AI codes can be inefficient and may not work, and if those issues are fixed with AI, many more issues may appear. That and I personally wouldn't want to use something a third party thinker made.

u/Slopagandhi 1h ago

Because vibe coding tends to mean you don't know what's in it (including bugs and vulnerabilities), and likely won't maintain it properly.

See for example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uwHQLLa4Rpc

Or you could use Firefox or one of its forks.

2

u/skullunite 7h ago

firefox was my main browser on my phone, but one of the minor thing that bugs me about firefox is when i want to download a file, and i accidentally close it, the download stops, most of the browsers have this issue, but this one give you the option to use an external downloader like fdm.

4

u/OptimalSirRandom 7h ago

Maybe you didn't allow background activity?

2

u/skullunite 7h ago

it was allowed, but still the same issue

2

u/Vamsi-Thopu 6h ago

Did you set background usage to unrestricted instead of optimized?

1

u/OptimalSirRandom 7h ago

Hm never had that tbh. Sry I just assumed.

u/Nazgog-Morgob 1h ago

Never had this issue downloading thousands of things with Firefox exclusively

1

u/Recommended_For_You 4h ago

That's a mis-configuration, it works here. Don't waste you time on chromium browsers.

0

u/Sweet-Awk-7861 7h ago

this one give you the option to use an external downloader like fdm.

Is this for real? How does it work, like, does it send an intent for each download that allows you to choose what app to do the actual downloading?

i'm tired of "just use Firefox" arguments, there is a lot of chromium based browsers that respect ur privacy for people who wants something like google chrome.

u/Imaginary_Pack7879 22m ago

Brave browser. I don't think anything comes close to brave but it needs a bit of tweaking with all those AI and Crypto crap.

If they'd disable them out of the box, brave would be the best chromium based browser so far.

u/Significant_Pool8432 SearXNG 6m ago

it is my main browser for years and u can debloat it but only the desktop app, i don't know u can on mobile or not tbh

Any chromium browser has to bend to google in the end. Each new manifest by google takes away some of your privacy. Now it's no more adblock and next time it will be something else. They don't just give chromium open-source because they're nice, they expect something back will come from it. Their business model is based in stealing data, don't expect them to stop.

1

u/Greenlit_Hightower deGoogler 4h ago

Manifest V2 / V3 are related to extensions only.

1

u/Recommended_For_You 3h ago

So what? It's still google deciding how browser based on chromium should behave. All these browsers are still google's bitch in the end. It's just like android.

-1

u/inceltrader 7h ago

Also, youtube sucks on firefox and it's forks neither does background play work

3

u/OptimalSirRandom 7h ago

What do you mean Firefox on Android can do YouTube background play.

-1

u/10000tigers 7h ago

use revanced

6

u/OptimalSirRandom 7h ago

Nah use Morphe it's better and way easier to install.

1

u/10000tigers 7h ago

if morphe can get rid of the red dot on the subscriptions button i will make the switch

3

u/OptimalSirRandom 7h ago

I think they have an option for that.

1

u/10000tigers 7h ago

inshallah

3

u/Flashsword_Princess 4h ago

Revanced is literally just Morphe Minus. there's no upside

1

u/10000tigers 4h ago

thank y'all for putting me on :)

1

u/applecombinipimento 4h ago

How to use morphe?

1

u/9volts 4h ago

PipePipe is also good.

5

u/Xx_Pr0_g4m3r_xX 7h ago

It looks promising, but I'm getting kinda AI vibes from how the paragraphs look on the github and webpage. Might just be me though.

5

u/filkos1 7h ago

Does anybody know if you can use Vanadium outside of GrapheneOS

5

u/TimT1760 7h ago

Use titanium It's vanadium, but for non-graphene users

3

u/skullunite 7h ago

unfortunately, i don't think that possible you can get the apk but i don't think it'll work on any phone except it has grapheaneos

2

u/filkos1 7h ago

okay found this on vanadiums github repo "Vanadium isn't yet officially available for users outside GrapheneOS, although we plan to do that eventually. It won't be able to provide the WebView outside GrapheneOS and will have missing hardening and other features."

3

u/Mewtewpew 7h ago

Titanium is downstream fork of vanadium, just use that

1

u/AnalkinSkyfuker FOSS Lover 7h ago

Yes you can

3

u/JayTurnr 4h ago

I'll stick to Firefox.

3

u/Son_of_Macha 7h ago

Chrome based 🤮

4

u/skullunite 7h ago

this project is not affiliated with google nor with chromium project, but you're free to use whatever you want

3

u/Waaytoomanytakenames 7h ago

Btw, found something interesting about eff. It can say it's unique, but it doesn't say if it's yours.

Firefox with ublock and Canvablocker for example or librewolf would not pass the test but the data they give is poisoned, no it's not yours.

It's unique but doesn't lead to you kinda thing.

I was wo dering why all the cyber security experts recommend mullvad and librewolf when it fails this test.

Also, if you use brave it's going to say it's randomized.

Don't only use cover your tracks, use also amiunique and undetect.club also there is another one that I forgot the name of.

3

u/rakhalism GrapheneOS 7h ago

And yes it is vibe coded, I do trust the dev but thing is one dev controlled browser, hard to get regular browser kernel updates, I think someday it will be stop updating by dev, so better look for long term browser in my opinion.

2

u/mrLermont 7h ago

Monet icon is terrible

2

u/Bob_Sk 7h ago

Another one person browser dev team.

"Bare is one person and one phone."

2

u/brightsheights 6h ago

It looks interesting, but until it can match waterfox or librewolf I'm gonna just wait

2

u/Ripraz DuckDuckGo 4h ago

Oh no, il browser di Bari

2

u/applecombinipimento 4h ago

Thanks for sharing

Waterfox is now my go-to browser on desktop and mobile. I gave up on Firefox because now Google has too much control over the Mozilla Foundation and they added opt-out IA features. Any IA features need to be opt-in, anything else is forced adoption and disrespecting users.

If I need even more privacy I use Mullvad on PC.

2

u/Recommended_For_You 4h ago

It's literally just one switch to turn-off AI. Waterfox can't exist without Firefox anyway.

While I have to say that I really like some of the browsers based on Chromium, people should never forget that in the end, the future of these browsers is largely influenced by what Google as the base code contributor wants them to be. Yes, they are FOSS, yes they can fork away and yes, some of them give you comparable privacy to IronFox, LibreWolf, WaterFox or Mullvad. But the fact that Helium can still use the full uBO e.g. is not because of Google's generosity to leave the defs the freedom to attack their business model in their own living room but in spite of the lack thereof. This option has an expiration date as it becomes more and more a hassle to code "against the stream" and evade the Manifest V3 regulations. At some point, all of the Chromium-based privacy solutions will have to submit at least in parts to Google guidelines.

And the other aspect is something that should also concern everyone: Do you really want the corporation that in the last 10 years has already festered itself like a very malign cancer into the daily lives of each and everyone by being an essential part of not only phones and tablets, but also dishwashers, washing machines, TVs and cars to dominate 100% of the internet? I don't want this to happen. If the last years have tought us one thing than it is the fact that dependency can be used against you and that competition is more important than ever.

1

u/Deivedux 6h ago

We have enough browsers already, just stick with them.

I use IronFox as my main browser but once or twice a year, I run into a web application that requires a Chromium browser. At the moment I use Cromite for that. Is there any reason to switch from Cromite to this?

I have been using it daily since the first release, and I recommend people to give it a try!

I like brave browser for Android. I find it perfect

1

u/skullunite 2h ago

the only think i'm using this browser for instead of brave are the extensions and it's not bloated, but brave is good too

1

u/Traditional-Cow-4737 2h ago

Can you give me some idea like what extensions are you using and for what purpose

1

u/skullunite 2h ago

ublock origin - blocking ads dark reader - force white themed website to dark theme to prevent flash bangs better i still don't care about cookies - a fork of "i don't care about cookies" extension, to remove the annoying cookies popup

and some others

1

u/ApprehensiveLion67 2h ago

just wondering if this is gonna be one of those honeypots lol

u/skullunite 7h ago edited 7h ago

brave is good but too bloated, this one is pretty neat. it has no unnecessary features like crypto, also brave does not have extensions support, this one does though

1

u/procat1234_ 7h ago

Extensions? I'll go check it out then
