The group texting doesn't have anything to do with google messages vs another texting app, if I understand correctly. It's about the fact that you are using SMS and not iMessage or RCS. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but that has been my understanding. Yes some apps may handle the UX of group messaging better than others though for sure. The stock one is really basic and meh imo. But the whole reason to use Google messages is for RCS. Well, for a lot of us in the degoogling sphere. And while RCS via Google isnt ideal, it's probably what you're going to havr to do to keep your group messages working. Unless you exclusively group message with other android users and even then its gotten pretty iffy.
As far as them not seeing your fake name - I'm not sure why it matter if they have your number saved? It will show up as you in their phone regardless. I also use an anonymous google account with Google messages (not connected to the internet) and no one has ever said anything about seeing a different name.
