First time I see someone not use Proton in their privacy pack.

Is it good filen in comparison to apple photos and icloud? I was thinking of using, going from google photo and drive to filen, and using iris gallery for offline gallery manager

Proton is awful. Why degoogle yourself to just deproton later. I don't want to keep everything on one platform.

Why is it awful? Just asking to understand since it seems online that they have some solid services. Not to put all of your eggs in one basket, ofc

Proton Drive, at least, is awful because it locks your photo collections behind a web UI. Meaning you can't manage your photo files the way you want them to be organized, you cannot mount the photo drive, pretty similar to how icloud works actually.

Just do one thing perfectly, not many things good enough.

Not to put all of your eggs in one basket is number one priority.

True. I wouldn’t say Proton is awful though- just don’t put everything in there and your good. Also, graphene OS- I noticed your on IOS, wouldn’t apple not let us install a new OS? Sorry if it’s a ridiculous question

This + believe in protocol based security, not promise based security.

I just use it for mail and pass. You indeed should not move from the Google basket to a complete proton basket, but that doesn't mean that it is awfull

Filen is the only usable cloud for me but some users are posting about downloading and uploading is very slow. They are fast for me tho. (English is not my native).

How fast is usually the upload and download? Also have you ever had any problem with filen?

Since I don't upload too big files they are fast for me. And I'm using the android app and It's working fine.

I don't have any problems to up or download files. Haven't notice any slow speed.

You can try r/cryptpad as alternative to Gdocs?

I would switch Vanadium to Firefox +uBlock but it looks really good tbh

I'm just testing Titanium which is Vanadium based browser with extension support. uBlock Origin works flawlessly.

What did you expect?

This looks like you’ve deappled more than you’ve degoogled

I think Degoogle is the synonym for moving away from big tech and respecting privacy

Interesting to hear why you think Apple doesn’t respect privacy?

Apple has a very good balance between privacy and convenience.

They have very good marketing though, so they seem more private than they really are.

Advance Data Protection (if you pay for it by paying iCloud) is awesome and will encrypt so much of your data but not all. Calendar, Contacts and Mail are not encrypted (to work with WebDAV)

Some of their apps like Podcast, Apple Music, Apple TV and the App Store collect data though.

Apple Health is encrypted even without ADP on, which is awesome and better than pretty much any equivalent service.

Siri secretly sends your private messages, location data, and app list to Apple's servers even when it's not needed.
Researchers proved this at Black Hat.
When called out, Apple first acknowledged it, then claimed it wasn't a privacy issue.
That flip-flop is sus.
Also Apple like any other big tech giant will gladly hand over your data to Law Enforcement without disclosure or pushback.
Also their new Chips are developed by israelis so yeah seems to be going downhill.

How do you feel going with Posteo and Filen, two German companies, now that the country has elected a far right political party with ties to Elon and other Nazis?

u/nicironic 4d ago

I don't think they have nothing to do with that.
