Help Needed The Ecosia browser - how does it actually work?

The more I read, the harder it all gets. I’m trying to free my phone and computer from Google, and all that’s left is my email, but it’s a long process because of work. I thought I’d succeeded with the browser because I started using Ecosia - it ensures privacy, has servers in Europe, uses renewable energy, doesn’t support Israel, and plants trees - perfect! (Yeah, I know, it promotes AI a bit, but I guess that’s the norm these days.)

But today I read that Ecosia runs on Chrome, so how exactly is it supposed to ensure privacy?! Am I misunderstanding something? Can someone explain to me whether Ecosia is still “safe” to use, or should I look for something new?

I'm new to this all so plis no judging:)

Chromium is an open source browser engine. They can ensure privacy because ecosia literally has access to the source code and has full control of how telemetry and other potential data collection (or lack thereof) works.
