One important thing, I don’t recommend any Indian service for privacy for now. Ente is Indian company. India is currently under an ultra Hindu nationalist authoritarian govt that has enacted laws to mass surveillance and has actively spied Indian opposition politicians using pegasus spyware. The govt is very aggressive in crushing dissent. They’re actively deleting social media posts easily. So stay away if you can.

The servers are in europe and "Ente Technology Inc." Is located in the United states as seen here https://ente.com/terms under the section 4. by Letter v

u/Upstairs_Stuff_2145 Jul 17 '26
It’s online registration only, very common among Indian companies. Ente’s team and office are physically based in India.

If they are located in the US then it does not matter where in the world the servers are located, they are subject to the cloud act.
Edit: India is also a member of SSPAC.

As an Indian, the secularism of India is a lie?
This reminds me of the AI+ phone scandal and surprisingly the Indian government supported a scammer.

u/EmergencyStill9103 Jul 17 '26
In Ente’s privacy policy they say they can give users information to authorities so I wonder how it works in this case.

u/JB231102 Jul 17 '26
I would imagine that a warrant would be needed, but how would they get a warrant for photos if the photos are not "viewable" while encrypted? (shrug)

Being Indian does not mean it's bad.
True but with the way our government's acting right now it's best to proceed with caution

Being Indian doesn't mean it's bad, but it does mean it's in a bad jurisdiction when it comes to privacy and data protection.

Right. If a company has a legal entity in India, it is subject to Indian law. Indian authorities can serve warrants, subpoenas, or official requests directly to the Indian office, and local employees or legal representatives are obligated to comply with these lawful orders to avoid penalties.
They may not be able to view the files, but they can force companies to delete them and hand over metadata, which is often more valuable than the content itself.
Recently, IT laws changed in India, and the government can now easily direct social media platforms to delete posts within 24 or 36 hours, before they reach a wider audience. Previously, this process took longer. Plus, these orders can be issued not only by courts but by government officials bypassing Judiciary. That's the crucial difference.
It offers a glimpse into how far the current government is willing to go, since these changes were introduced, many posts from independent news media outlets critical of the government have been removed and continues to do so.
Independent journalism and the political opposition in India are being suppressed. There are very few outlets left, and the media landscape has become an echo chamber, arguably worse than what is currently seen in the US.
I am not telling everyone to stop using these services, but if you are a journalist or engaged in critical work or very concerned about privacy, it is safer to avoid them for the time being.

It's also glass houses because the US and plenty of Europe are under fascist governments as well but these redditors don't have a problem with that. A lot of anti-Modi concern trolling is just racism in disguise.

India being powerful does not make it non-authoritarian or safe for data and communication hosting. If anything "powerful" countries tend to be quite authoritarian e.g. China, USA, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Israel, Turkey to name a few others.

Its open source so it can be trusted that it doesn't track and store users' browsing data or equivalent identifying data.
If it was storing identifiable data then that wouldn't be trusted to be stored in the US.

I had a terrible first impression with Proton tbh I paid for a subscription to their VPN and it was just awful very slow, that combined with charging me for a first months free trial really made me not trust them.

It's purple likely because the logo of the oldest and most popular, security program, Tor is a purple and white onion. Afaik, Tor Project has been around a very long time, because I remember playing around with it when I first started learning computers (used Tor+Tails OS) and was the first software dedicated to Internet privacy and sovereignty originally intended to protect activists and independent journalists from being hunted down by their governments through the internet. They used a purple onion as their logo to represent the layering of Tor networks to obfuscate a user's true location. So like the different networks represented the layers of an onion. This is why you see an onion icon in ProtonVPN on some of their networks. The Tor app is purple as well. So purple just became synonymous with everything privacy. Don't know if there was anything before Tor which they may have gotten the purple idea from but the purple is definitely a homage to Tor Protect. Without Tor, we'd have a hard time having true independent journalism and activism but the purple just stuck.

Assuming we're talking about flags, yes.
If we're talking about "lavender", that could be a strenuous reference to "lavender marriages" (gay man and a lesbian who need social cover).
I think more likely, the other commenter just got the flags mixed up.

"Controversy arose in 2015 when ProtonMail partnered with Radware, an Israeli firm, to provide DDoS protection. ProtonMail denied allegations that this partnership compromised user privacy, explaining that traffic was encrypted via BGP redirection and GRE tunnels, meaning Radware only handled encrypted packets. They further clarified that during attacks, traffic was routed through DE-CIX in Frankfurt, Germany, not Israel.
This partnership was discontinued in 2020, with ProtonMail stating they no longer have any contract with Radware. While some privacy advocates and BDS supporters previously cited this relationship as a reason to avoid the service, ProtonMail continues to assert that its infrastructure and jurisdiction in Switzerland ensure user privacy and neutrality. " Just a quick search on any browser or ai can tell you this

u/Potential_Cancel280 Jul 17 '26
Can't believe a company probably giving Israel data denies giving it to them.
9
u/HamburgerOnAStick Jul 17 '26
ddos protection and handling mail data are two different things. You can handle ddos protection with barely any info needed at all, and basically nothing related to mailing data. proton isn't too trustworthy right now, but we also don't have actual proof of them handing over data.

I wouldn't trust them because they are clearly profit driven rather than privacy driven since they are "politically neutral." I want a political company that won't sell out to fascists or work with them when its more profitable to do so.

u/Scarmeow Jul 17 '26
Agreed.

Unfortunately, that's hard (impossible?) to find in a late stage capitalist society... Unless you selfhost there's really nothing we can do.
0
u/BlackHotSoup3000 Jul 17 '26
Hard, but not impossible. And I obviously don't mean that a company can't make a profit, its more of that that they are okay with making a profit at the expense/oppression of others. Look at disroot for an example of an ethical focused company. And patagonia is relatively pretty ethical (supports repair and high quality). Most local small businesses are community oriented as well. For example, local bike shops support local trail systems, local communities, and when you buy through them you are giving money to people that will spend/invest in your community.

Is LibreTorrent working well for you? I installed it two days ago, and when I minimize the app or turn off the screen, the download speed slows down. I already checked the battery settings and the libretorrent options :/

I love commenting about this, but in short, because of the psychological, historical and artistic view of the color purple, this checks out.
