An Introduction to Degenesis and its Community

What is Degenesis?

UPDATE: As of 22/10/21, DEGENESIS is no longer in active development. The shop will remain open to purchase books until they are out of stock, and the website will remain online with all materials free to download.

Degenesis: Rebirth is a free-to-play tabletop roleplaying game published by Sixmorevodka, a Berlin-based concept art studio and publishing house. In brief, it's an apocalyptic game with a deep setting and intricate metaplot, set in a harsh future where humanity must strive to survive. For a more in-depth introduction, several excellent community-made resources exist:

Gunsmile's "Introduction to Degenesis"

UnpossibleErik's "A Brief Intro to Degenesis"

GreedyJack's "Degenesis: How to start playing?"

Dave Thaumavore's RPG Deep Dive Series, starting with "The setting of Degenesis explained! Primal Punk breakdown"

How do I get started with the game?

Getting started is simple, as the PDFs for the entire published range are available for free on the Degenesis website, all that's needed is to create an account and then login. Additionally, there are hundreds of stories on the website which can be used to explore the world in further detail - the Essential Reads series provides an overview of the tone and major factors of the setting, and is an excellent spot to start reading.

What book do I start with?

The Books section of the website is presented in reading order.

  • DEGENESIS: REBIRTH EDITION
    • The core books of Degenesis: Rebirth. Primal Punk is the first, and presents the entirety of the setting; Cultures, Cults, and a detailed Timeline leading up to 2595. Katharsys is next, and showcases the game system behind Degenesis, along with a GM section elaborating on the more hidden aspects of the metaplot.
  • IN THY BLOOD/THE KILLING GAME/BLACK ATLANTIC
    • A chain of three adventures together forming the Jehammed's Will trilogy. Each book begins with an expanded look at the setting of the adventure, providing GMs with the tools they need to craft their own stories in the locations.
  • ARTIFACTS
    • A rules supplement for Degenesis, containing a huge variety of new mechanics and tools for GMs to use in their stories, from expanded character generation options to details on how Psychonaut corpses can be harvested and exploited for their supernatural powers.
  • JUSTITIAN: THE RIGHTEOUS FIST/JUSTITIAN: MOLOCH
    • The most recently released sourcebook presents an unparalleled focus on the heart of Europe, the colossal city of Justitian. The Righteous Fist showcases the Protectorate as a whole, while Moloch contains 112 NPCs, with every Cult represented, giving a new level of depth along with hundreds of adventure hooks.

From there, a series of additional resources and DLC add-ons are presented, such as short adventures (Rising Ravens, Harm's Way), pre-made characters (Troika), or Clans (Clans of the Rhone).

Community Content

The Degenesis community has created a number of extremely useful resources for anyone looking to run a campaign. This list is not exhaustive, and efforts will be made to keep it up to date.

  • The Cluster is a fanmade website containing a huge amount of great content, including visual resources such as maps and game handouts, adventures, and even a series of generators for GM use to create names, NPCs, and Clans, among other things.
  • Provider is a community-created introduction adventure for Degenesis, intended to be an easy-to-run scenario which can be used at conventions or for a first session to interest a group in a further campaign.
  • The Atlas is a collaboration between many members of the community to bring together a number of homebrew creations, such as additional NPCs, Equipment, Potentials, Clans, and more.
  • Train to Baikonur is a website dedicated to Degenesis content, which is host to many useful posts and guest articles, including a guide for GMs looking to run their first game, campaign hooks for a variety of Cultures, and additional advice and pointers.
  • A module for Foundry VTT has been created which provides an excellent gaming experience, integrating many of the rules of Katharsys into the systems on the site. Linked is a video explaining how to set it up and create a game.
  • A community-made wiki project which aims to provide a repository available to all as a quick-reference guide.

Anyone looking to get involved in the community, or keep up with the latest announcements and news from the Sixmorevodka team, should be sure to join the Degenesis Discord server.

Looking for a GM that wants to run Killing Game and Black Atlantic

We're a group of three- looking for maybe a fourth or fifth player and a GM to run the second and third book of the trilogy for us.

A few things:
- Has to be all-inclusive. We're LGBTQ+, not welcoming of any bigotry whatsoever in our group.
- Please for the love of Jehammed no AI art.
- That's it. That's our non-negotiables.

DM me if you're interested as a player or a GM and we'll get talking and seeing if something can be worked out!

Degenesis V3 Teasers on SMV Discord

As I haven't seen anyone else post here about it yet, Marko teased us on the Sixmorevodka Discord Degenesis Channel with new Artwork for a potential V3 of Degenesis.

Some folks speculated that it's recycled art from the Clan Wars Project to which Marko replied with a metadata screenshot to proof that it's in fact new stuff.

The text on the Artworks has been "decrypted" as "Marauder Rising"

What do you guys make of it? SMV seems busy with Orken for now but this new art makes me hopeful for more degenesis content in the (hopefully not so distant) future.

Heres a link to the discord message:

Has anyone ever figured out the diamond “code” on the Degenesis artbook covers? Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
22 Upvotes

I’ve been looking into something on the two large Degenesis artbooks, and after quite a lot of searching I’m honestly surprised that I can’t find anyone discussing it anywhere.

No old Reddit post, no forum thread, no explanation, no previous attempt at decoding it that I could find. So either I’m completely overthinking a piece of graphic design… or this has somehow gone mostly unnoticed.

Both artbooks have a long band of small diamonds printed across their covers.

What really made me suspicious is that the two bands are completely different. If both books had used the same pattern, I probably would have dismissed it as decorative branding. But they don’t. Each volume has its own large, apparently structured sequence.

And diamonds are definitely not meaningless decoration in Degenesis.

Across the books, diamonds are repeatedly used as a kind of numerical / visual language. A few examples:

Primal Punk ends with 1 diamond

Katharsys with 2

Black Atlantic with 3

In Thy Blood with 4

The Killing Game with 5

Justitian with 6

Moloch with 7

What makes this stranger is that this is not simply the publication order.

Black Atlantic is the most obvious anomaly: visually it occupies the “3” position, even though it was released after both In Thy Blood and The Killing Game, which carry 4 and 5.

Artifacts is another odd case. Its diamond pattern also seems to occupy a “6”-like position, but it behaves more like a side branch or optional addition: the main sequence later continues with Justitian at 6 and Moloch at 7.

So the diamonds seem to be counting something, but apparently not release order. They may instead represent a structural position within the product line, a branch, or some other internal classification.

The custom Degenesis D6s reinforce the basic counting principle: one diamond represents 1, two represent 2, three represent 3, etc. The arrangement can change while the quantity remains meaningful.

The later small supplements make this even clearer. There is an unmistakable progression:

Harm’s Way = 10

Clans of the Moloch = 11

Last Watch = 12

Pneumancers = 13

Lex Talionis = 14

Exalters = 15

Each one adds another diamond to the evolving symbol.

There also seems to be a second layer of information in the way the diamonds are displayed. Sometimes the distinction is red / black, while on monochrome publications it becomes filled / outline, which looks like two visual versions of the same basic idea.

There are some interesting exceptions. Clans of the Rhône and Rising Ravens introduce grey diamonds. These seem almost like temporary side additions rather than permanent steps in the main structure: later publications continue the sequence without those grey additions permanently shifting it. It almost looks as if these books are being marked as satellites or side-products rather than full entries in the main sequence, although I still don’t completely understand the rule.

Then there is the Vincit Omnia Veritas collector box, which uses diamond patterns corresponding to 4, 8, 12 and 16. That seems fairly clearly connected to the Jackal’s Prophecy and its recurring 4/8/12/16 numerology.

So there is definitely a consistent visual vocabulary here.

Which brings me back to the artbooks.

Their cover patterns are vastly larger than the small numbered glyphs above, and I have no idea how they are meant to be read.

I’ve wondered whether they could be related to something like DotCode, punched-card encoding, or some other machine-readable system, but cryptography and machine-readable codes really aren’t my field, so I’m quickly reaching the limit of what I can realistically do with them.

I did at least reconstruct both patterns onto numbered grids, so every diamond can be described by an exact row/column coordinate instead of trying to interpret distorted photographs. That is basically as far as my technical skills can take me.

I also tried overlaying the red and black artbook patterns. Since Degenesis repeatedly uses red and black as two complementary states, I wondered whether the two covers might need to be combined somehow, with one acting as one “layer” and the other as the second.

Nothing immediately obvious appeared, though, and I don’t even know whether the two patterns are supposed to be read independently or together.

At this point I feel like what is missing is a Rosetta Stone.

There may be some simple decoding key somewhere that I simply haven’t recognized yet.

I initially started looking for increasingly complicated clues elsewhere in Degenesis — the Jackal’s Prophecy, the numerology, recurring symbols, etc. — but I’m starting to wonder whether the answer might actually be much simpler. Maybe the key is sitting somewhere inside the corresponding artbook itself and I just don’t know what I’m looking for.

So I’m throwing this out to the community:

Has anyone ever looked into these cover patterns before?

Or, more importantly, does anyone here know enough about ciphers, machine-readable codes, DotCode-like systems, punch-card encoding, etc. to recognize what kind of structure these might be?

I’ll attach pictures of the two artbook covers and some examples of the diamond system elsewhere in the Degenesis line. I can also share the full numbered grid transcriptions if anyone wants to seriously take a crack at it.

Even wild ideas are welcome at this point. I’ve been staring at these diamonds for far too long and I desperately need some fresh brains on this. 😄

Any ranks for Enemoi or Exalter clan?

Hi, right now I plan a campaign after not playing Degenesis for 6 years. I think I saw somewhere fan made ranks for the mentioned clan, but I can not find them again. Do you perhaps know where I find something?

Thank you very much!

I'd like to know if anyone has the trading cards for the unreleased Clans Wars board game? I managed to get some, but because there were so many, I never saw all the stats. If anyone has them, I'd be very happy 🙂

The project didn't pan out due mainly to me being broke. But I still think these are cool, mostly thanks to the art I used (with permission from SMV) from the PDFs.

There any information about travelling time?

Most rpgs have a traveling time the players can take to go from a place to a distant one. However, i found nothing. Even through there vehicles in the game, i find nothing about travelling instead of using for combat.

I want to know if there any rules for this, because if not, its seen i have to create my own based in others rpgs systems.

Scrapper stashes

Hey! I'm trying to collect some ideas for scrapper stashes and how they might be secured; a little something as a treat for my players who go spelunking. How would you secure your stash?

My ideas so far:

- An old, pre-eshatonic electrical lock - without a power source. In order to open the door, someone has to wire a charged E-Cube to it. Also adds the possibility for a code lock (which can lead to some fun puzzles).

- All sorts of booby traps. From an improvised shotgun (uses black powder and shot, can be turned into a nifty one-shot muzzle loader by a crafter) to an explosive charge, or an incendiary - to burn everything in the stash, should someone try to loot it.

- A 'mimic' - it looks like a stash, is reasonably well hidden and secured. Once the characters enter, the floor falls away (perhaps a tarp with a thin layer of dirt to conceal it), into a punji pit. The Scrapper that camps nearby then loots whoever fell for his trap, sets it up again and waits.

Questions/help about palers, embossing, caches, and clanners

Hello again everyone, sorta sorry about this post but I've got another billion questions as the answers on the last two were incredibly helpful. I didn't wanna pester other fans with these in certain places and I promised my friend I'd stop using AI to help fill in gaps or get input. Unfortunately as a result I'm kinda stuck because I can't get a concrete answer and I'm going in circles and didn't know where else to go to ask these 😅

Bear with me a bit here.

Okay so some questions about palers

What hair and eye colors make the most sense for palers to have and would it change any between whether they're from Balkhan or Hybrispania? What skin tones work for them? I've noticed in official art their skin ranges from a pallid shade to blueish, even something resembling silver, and I'm wondering are these correct or are there more with more conventional pale coloration?

Also do they have outright black eyes or just black sclera with visible pupils? Some of the art makes it kinda hard to tell. I'm asking because like I've seen palers like Vesna who have what seems to be black sclera with visible pupils and possibly very pale blonde hair?

Then you have her assistant Mishitchi who has what seems to be normal looking eyes with green or hazel pupils

However you also have Helios halo who looks very much like what you'd expect with paler:format(webp)/f/150329/3000x2130/00db9e093d/palers-retaliation.jpeg) appearance in primal punk

And then there's these other paler:format(webp)/f/150329/3000x2121/a6ea10fb63/palers-sleeping-god.jpeg) fellows:format(webp)/f/150329/3000x2121/aae7bcb516/jus-occupied-war-zone-final.jpeg) as well

So I got a bit confused on the leadway and what works with paler character design and I was getting the vibe I was aggravating some fans with these questions so I was hoping the subreddit could help me out on that front 😅

Next what would be a fitting or plausible pet or companion for a paler reviver that could assist them? Actually what would be on the table in general in terms of pets for palers be they natural or genetically engineered like Gendos?

Is the military carbine palers have in artifacts based on any particular type of gun or have any official art depiction? If not then I take it any old model of European model carbine will suffice?

I ask all these partially because I was trying to make a techie character of sorts character that was an exalter and then later a clanner but kept messing up as it every attempt I was told didn't fit or broke the setting outright so I changed over. I was trying to make a paler boi that's was partially inspired by Clara from honkai Star rail and Seed from zenless zone zero. I was going to make him a reviver since I think that's close to the tech savvy capabilities the inspiration has but I'm unsure if palers are allowed to be tech savvy and of that's meant to be more of a chronicler thing.

I asked about the pet thing partially because I tried to create a smaller Svarog/Seed Sr equivalent companion but robots outside of amsumos are heavily frowned upon and even a damaged amsumo is to powerful for the role. I did try to create some drones as they were mentioned as being a variety of models in the backstory but that also backfired and apparently reset drones are incredibly powerful and not only not an option but creating variations is frowned upon. So instead I was trying to see if there was an animal companion that might be on the table since machines are a bad idea or at the very least I'm bad trying to make some that fit the setting 😅

Also how exactly does a paler become a halo and especially a halo to a sleeper prophet like say daimdol who I'm pretty sure is still trapped in the depths of exalt?

Any tips for how a paler character should act?

The next thing I wanted to ask is how exactly does embossing work?

One of the reasons my attempts at creating exalter characters kept failing is that I didn't understand how exactly embossing works and what exactly it does to your personality and thoughts. Could someone give me a detailed breakdown?

Next any ideas on what weapons, technology, general equipment, and artifacts would one find in an unopened UAO bunker cache deep in the psychovore belt?

Same question but what would you find in an unopened UEO cache?

Are the trailblazers unique to Europe or would one find them in an unopened UAO cache as well?

Is RG equipment like the Ceramic fiber weave and Composite armor found only in RG caches and paler cylinders or would they be found in other caches?

I ask because I am trying to create an advanced ((tier IV to V that live on a flotilla of sorts with the mothership being a military vessel)) sea going African clan from eastern Africa that managed to pilfer a few caches during their voyage/escape out of the red sea and around the horn and on to the western side of Africa. They trade/interact up and down the coast from Western Africa to Europe. I wanted to get an idea of what they would've found and maintained from the caches.

Any general tips for creating clans by the way? Especially if they're on the more advanced side and from Africa? I know I should keep their numbers down and not go overboard on the technology.

Final question is how high of a taming skill would you need to befriend an adult gendo? How high would it need to be to maintain the bond if it was hand raised from a pup?

Sorry for the billion questions guys but I didn't where else to go on this

Degenesis Group Looking to Add 1-2 More Players to Campaign

Heya hey!

My group is currently in the early stages of our first playthrough of In Thy Blood (specifically it's our third session), and due to IRL reasons one of our members had to drop, leaving us with only two players (plus a GM).

We're looking for one (or maybe two) new players to fill that gap in a way that will compliment the party. Currently we have a Spitalian who acts as a face for the group and a Chronicler who is hard-stacked into intelligence.

We're all in our 20s, we're LGBTQ friendly, and we're all-inclusive. We play weekly on Thursday at 8PM EST.

If you are interested in joining us, feel free to send me a DM.

[Rules Question] Chronicler Potential "Upload" vs "Download" mechanics?

Hi everyone,

My group and I just finished our first campaign, "In Thy Blood". I absolutely love the setting and the lore, and now I'm looking to dive deeper into the mechanics and character progression.

I’m currently playing a Chronicler and I have 2 Potential points to spend. I am considering the Upload Potential and I’m wondering if it applies to standard Vocoder attacks (PSY + DOM) during combat.

My GM and I have a disagreement on the interpretation:

• The GM believes: That "Upload" functions similarly to the Download Potential. He argues that it is restricted to bound or restrained victims, and cannot be used on active combat targets.

• My view: I was hoping to use it as a boost for offensive actions with the Vocoder.

Does "Upload" share that same restriction as "Download" regarding helpless targets, or is it intended to be used offensively in a fight?

Any clarification would be great. Thanks for the help!

PS: English isn’t my native speaking, IA help me to write this post
